The AncienT Greeks, Egyp- Tians, and Indians have given us insighT To iTs definiTion, buT iTs modern applicaTion is ours To explore. Some mighT even say ThaT John F. Kennedy High School fiTs The definiTion . . . AN AMAZING IVIAZE. There is a beginning and an end To high school. ln order To successfully compleTe high school The sTudenT musT overcome a cerTain number of obsTacles: homeroom Teachers, hall moniTors, parking aTTendanTs, TesTs, homework, and SATS, To name a few. On occasion The sTudenT accidenTally chooses The wrong paTh. He Then finds himself deeper in The labyrinTh or aT a dead end. However, iT is rare for a sTudenT To give up on someThing ThaT he wishes To accomplish. The sTudenT musT now choose anoTher paTh To follow in order To reach his goal . . . a diploma. In John F. Kennedy High School, The sTudenT's main objecTive is To successfully compleTe The puzzle. The chance To obTain an educafion and To enjoy himself is The sTudenT's opTion. If he accepTs The TesT of skill and survives unTil The end, he can accomplish anyThing he desire. lT's amazing, isn'T iT, To Think ThaT you, The 4987 graduafe, have solved The puzzle of high school, and ThaT you have successfu ly compleTed The maze. 32 jxvlffgh' ,ff H' 1 Ivrgs -'S .3 17' , Ev' . x r TU' I , , I .J M 'W Q g ML N X D, ,M , V Kumi' 'QQ . Over the past five years, under the direction of lvlr. Daoust, it has grown from a fledg- ling club to a leader not only in our school but in Long island and New York State as well. Not just a history club , the Yorkers set up and participate in fund raisers. community service activities, andlnter-club meetings. starting with the leadership conference in the fail and leading up to the District Jamboree in the winter and the extremely popular ancihighly successful statewide convention inthe spring, held this year in Buffalo. Each year the club's members win a number of awards for hsitoryicompetitions, such as the History Bowl and the National History Day contests, as well as for club achievements and individual accompiishments. This year the Yorkers were actively involved also in raising funds for Cerebral Palsy and Down Syndrome centers, as well as in promoting both Homecoming fwhich was unfortunately rained outp and Drama Club produc- tions. in the minds of the Yorkers, school and communi- ty always come first. The Yorkers would like to take this opportunity to offer congratulations to the graduating class of 4987. We hope that you will serve your community, your state, and your country well. T s KEY CLUB V ,',, 1 W,-,T.1 if f ,, This years Key Club consists of over sixty members. lvlr. Wiener, in his first year as advisor, is doing a fine job organizing and helping The Key Club function both ln Kennedy High School and in The rest of Long island. The Key Club has performed various services for The community over The years and has continued To do so. This year, the Key Club has organized a basketball tournament benefitting the American Cancer Society, a drive to collect food for The United Nations Children's Fund, a blood drive, a Salvation Army fund raiser, and a scholarship drive. The Key Club is The largest club of itskind in the world existing in ten countries and having over 300,000 members. it is fitting therefore, that Key Clubs from different schools cooperate with each other. ln keeping with This spirit, many members from our school's club have participated in Key Club functions throughout the state, including the annual stateconvention on March 20-22 in Fallsburg, New York. To the great surprise of everyone involved, the debators finally sur- passed The basketball team as Kennedy's team with the most student fan support. For members of the Team this has meant intense pressure to succeed, but ultimately. an infinitely gratifying experience. K . At the first Tournament of The season in Hewlett, a record 244 Kennedy students showed up to cheer on the Team. This was totally unexpected, as Debate had never been much of an at- traction in years past, and pre-tournament publicity had been minimal. Still, The debators loved having the fans around, as their every paint was met with wild applause while opponents were booed and heckled. When J.F.K. partners Brian Stettin and Joel Tabin finished first in the Varsity division, the exalted crowd and other debators carried them home on their shoulders. The empty team bus was driven back to the depot. By the second tournament in Kings Park, Debate team hype had whipped the school into a frenzy. The J.F.K. fans arrived in droves. As the first round got underway, an incredible 8796 of the student body was in attendance. T This level of support was maintained throughout the season. As students grew to understand debate, so grew their love forthe game. Now, lt's not uncommon to see students engaged in casu- al scrimmage debates in The parking lot or locker rooms. lt's refreshing to see the youth of America embracing more cere- bral pursuits. Perhaps someday in the not-too-distant future, the fifty states will follow JFK's example, and debating will become the uncontested national pastime. .
