This is the high school stud- ied by advertising agencies, selected by movie directors and T.V. producers, and ultimately con- sumed by you prior to entry. The archetypal high school. Contrived from the cliches and generalizations of Every-High, U.S.A., this high school selects its stu- dents and appearance carefully. It chooses not the intricate mass of interesting times and places char- acteristic of any individual high school, but the most obvious, superficial and sentimental aspects to be flashed by you in a commercial just quickly enough to offend you fnow that you realize ith and make your parents romanticize about teenageness. It's easy enough for them to assume what you do six hours a day without their presence, even if they went to high school 20-30 years ago, because they have been observing a high school even if they haven't set foot in Kennedy. What you get from high school is essentially what you want and work for, but since our desires in JFK arenit based upon real need, we let other peo- ple decide for us. Media. Our preconceptions of high school are carefully designed and pushed in the most heinous method - advertising. Televi- sion, movies, advertising and in our prophetic anxi- ety to shake hands with this blonde, blue-eyed institution, we accept them. It's really unavoidable - what we don't receive from T.V. and literature we get from our brothers and sisters, who have undergone the same process. Disappointment? Not necessarily. While Kennedy might not meet the expectations one might have of this projected, ideal high school, we co-exist with the novel let-down and can only compare experiences afterwards. This myth about high school generates a false, drug-like enthusiasm for something unobtainable, which usually heals after the sophomore year, but returns, traditionally, fifteen years from now as you dust off your yearbook. We hope not though. We really hope that for what high school was - and after all it was a rather long, long period of time - and for what high school wasn't, it won't be remembered as an over-edited thirty-second soda ad. ix X .7 Wie Q X X , v I yi ,nga W f sQ 2 :Q- Yi fe'- f . ,, , R I I N ' x F' -X sf N. 1 N N- .ei ffm. , 4 ,. 1, - fy -L. I knew it was a dream because everything was perfect, yet nothing was right. I guess what happened was that, on that night, my superego happened to be overcome by my id. My id has a funny habit of creating whatever I'd love to see during my regular, sterile life. If it weren't for my id's semi- restricted night shift, I'd probably be running around taking orders in a greasy-spoon somewhere. My initial tipoff that it was a dream was that we all lived in the city. QThe city forms - often physically, but inevitably psy- chically - a circlel. I heard the typical city noises - blaring, ter- rible, disco-beat, giant radios, cooing, dirty pigeons, and screams for help from the pitiful junkies. Anyhow, when I got to school and walked through the door, I heard the radio system on. It wasn't that terrible music one usually hears. It was real music. I heard the strains of raw emotion. It was Jim Morrison and the Doors. Even the mood of the kids was perfect. It matched Morri- son's voice. Hello, I love you, won't you tell me your name? Amazing enough the answer was, Yes. Next, I saw our principal. He wasn't a man with a salt and pepper beard. He was young, and he almost, but not quite, looked like the type of demi-hero people our age enjoy listening to. It was first period and no one was carrying red Cor is it green'?J cards. However, all was tranquil and peaceful. Every- one was relaxed and comfortable, all aggression was missing. When I entered my second period class I knew all was perfect. It was an elective class. I was taking philosophy. Finally, a class where grades were given out on the basis of intelligent, philosophic discussion, not on the basis of angles and curves iTake that one any way you wantl. Better yet, when the bell rang, amazingly enough, I didn't lose the better part of my hear- ing for twenty minutes. It was a soft, musical, almost angelic chime. No more would students have to endure crippling pain if their locker was unfortunately enough situated under one of these huge, metal, heavy-duty bells. It became a reward to have a so-called bell locker. I floated on through the day until lunchtime. Only there was no east and west for is it north and southl cafeterias. It was now known as student-teacher relaxation halls. There were real, pad- ded seats, without little pieces of ancient, psychedelic gum stuck on 99'Z5 of the chair. The food, in addition, was no longer left- overs fyou know, the food the Bangladesh government rejected several years ago.J One could actually identify what everything was without ubiquitous, aging cafeteria ladies screaming, Can't you tell? You big dummy, you! What a difference! When this day in school ended, I was almost sorry. When I woke up I thanked my id. It easily changes nature's course and places me anywhere. I could imagine unreachable projections, unattainable dreams, the plateau of my own mind, all the while, resting peacefully while waiting to face the next day of school. That's the hardest part, you know. 9 a...u....,M......,..f. 3 -r 'lf s nn-q I -19 Y-- -V f V ,ww ,W.Wm:mAi Wh' M . K . X -M V Uqjyf. vi f paw 1 .1- -su- .,:f'51w5 . Girls don't even look the same - distorted maybe - like everything else after wrestling practice. Tonight's practice has left me just enough time to eat a one course meal, and I canlt even do that. But if you keep your muscles toned, they won't com- plain when you don't eat. It was the fifth time this week, the tenth hour, leaving me a real swinging weekend to look forward to: No drinking, no girls, more practice, and a judo lesson at 7:30 on Saturday morning. I couldn't put up with all this unequivocal nonsense if it weren't for the discipline that has been imposed on me by coach Schaefer and a toler- ance hardened by the nihilistic, existential promise of victory. Victory: I hear that word too often - so often that it has lost its meaning, and I have to keep repeating it in my mind so that I won't forget what it really means. V I passed Sue in the hall today, she said, Hi , but I doubt she realized that I had practiced the single leg take down unsuccessfully for the first time today, when I didn't say, Hi, back. You really begin to evaluate the impor- tance of a sport when it starts intruding on other people like friends, family, and pets in ways that you really don't want it to. I can't ask Sue out until March anyhow. People shouldn't see that I'm grumpy, tired, and sacked out. I'm not suffering. You only suf- fer when you do something against your own will, and wrestling, as much as it seems to debilitate a person, keeps you going and gives you a rea- son for working so hard, and winning negates all apparent pain and anguish. Fifteen years from now you won't see the marks caused by sweat and starvation, but all metal awards will remain. They will stay strong. Metal is strong, and I envy metal. I won't call Mom to pick me up. I have to lose more weight or I can forget about next week's match. Let's see 28 minutes on Tuesday . . . today's windy though, and I can hardly feel the blood pulse through my thighs. I must not feel the blood though . . . I must hear it! It must tell me it is there, and I must remember it is there when I fight the natural. Strengthen . . . increase . . . resist the temptation - medi- ocrity and unobtrusiveness. Ignore every desire but the desire to win, since it can not exist with the others. Maybe wrestlers don't eat so they will become delirious and can't see what they are missing. Samson was blind, and that perhaps is the secret. Don't act by what is visible, act by prediction and the promise of future. Victory. Metal. You felt the performance, but it really wasn't there, and you didn't have to pay for it. That was in the '60's. This year we're introducing the two seater simulator G.T. We've kept the famous classic simulator body, but reduced the weight by losing door panels, wheels, win- dows, and engine, and adding a lightweight racing steering wheel and a five speed transmission. Even the inexperienced admirer can see the difference in the new streamlined fiberglass shell and the lowering of the suspension. Come by your nearest simulator dealer and check one out. Look ma no teeth. Ralph Bernstein I donlt know, it happened so fast, and I'm still looking for it. High School that is, in the general and sentimen- tal sense of that word . . . images of milk shakes at the corner drug store, a lack of nerves at the junior prom, convertibles, drive-in-movies, coca cola, generation gaps, rebels without causes . . . And I miss it though I have never experienced it. Teen. JFK's children can simply no longer cast themselves as teenagers. Teen, you see, is that poignant period of erring and adjusting during high school. But that energy and strife for youth seems to have gotten lost somewhere in the back seat of a black Coupe de Ville, never to be seen again, to be cut ever so quickly like the life of the commercial which has influenced me to feel so sentimental. I'd rather be watching General Hospital. Where we once made the error of dating high school blindly, building up expectations of a place where no one gets old, we assure ourselves that we'll never be mislead again. We'd rather be watching General Hospitalf, where adults over emphasize their adulthood and responsibilities, than participate in a real situation, teen, a date gone sour, a date which we embarrassingly and foolishly crammed for. 238 SJC Y ' ,f -,r N 'fi J my wwf?
