THE UNSUNG HEROES OF KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL THE TIME: 3:15, Tuesday afternoon Others have left school for The Little Rascals or General Hospital. But not this dedicated group. This group of fifteen remains. What group is this, one may ask? Is it Basketball? No. Wrestling? No. Volleyball? No. Itis THE MATH TEAM. This year's math team has not lived up to its heralded potential. The grueling training camp and practice sessions have taken their toll. Glen Stettin, formerly star performer, suffered a mental lapse while trying to tackle a difficult cosine problem, and has been sidelined for two weeks with a pulled cerebrum. Scott Strauss, starting geometry, is questionable for the next meet with writeris cramp. Rob Schuman, j.V. high scorer, I am optimistic about our chances. This is primarily because the kids are willing to listen and learn. I spend all my free time - including weekends - studying the math manuals. My opinion is that our defense needs help. Luckily, these reporters were able to secure seats on the team bus to the last meet. During the meet, chants of think, think, think? could be heard throughout the school. Outside, eleven people were trampled to death by the frenzied mob trying to desperately to get in. The Math Team knew nothing about it, however, and continued with the meet. Ayatollah Khomeini's troops made a surprise appearance, and held the team hostage until a tough log problem could be answered. Mr. Tan- nenbaum threatened to use the force of the most powerful school in the country if the hostages were not released promptly. There were riots in the math rooms. Finally, under tremendous pressure, and inhumane conditions, Steven Markowitz pulled through and answered it. Responding later to reporters queries, Markowitz said, I did it for the Gipperf' Many people think that the mathletes do not work hard, but this is untrue. Being a math team member takes quite a lot of dedication. A strict diet of binomials and factorials must be kept, and a grueling practice must be attended for two hours a day, and all day Sunday. Math team is indeed a rewarding and worthwhile school sport. It is by far the most under-rated sport in the school Cbackgammon is secondj, and is not receiving its well deserved attention. Why don't the cheerleaders travel with the team? Where is the Math Resource Center? It is about time that the school took the Math Team seriously. fi! ,,,..l'

phomenfr-we SE SS The 1979-1980 Sophomore Class began the year on a good note. We had outstanding attendance at the meetings and we hope to accomplish a great deal this year. The organization, so far, has been very enthu- siastic in the planning of our first fund raising project, the selling of Class of '82 tee-shirts. Com- mittees have been formed to look into the possi- bilities of selling school pens, pennants and buttons. This yearis Sophomore Class participated in the annual Homecoming Parade down Bellmore Avenue. An impressive banner was made by our Vice-Presi- dent, Wendy Bernstein. The remaining officers on the board of the Sophomore Class are: President - Kenneth Maimen, Secretary - Stephen Wolf, and Treasurer - Lisa Shaw. We are not going to sell T-shirts.
