In addition to the monetary contribu- tions, Interact serves the community by donating its time to several causes. The club made valentines for the senior citi- zens, visited a children's ward at a hospi- tal, and marched in the annual Home- coming Parade. Throughout the year, Interact has con- tinued in its tradition of outstanding school and community service. Their con- tribution is truly appreciated. Another notable organization which is involved in fund raising for the benefit of the community is AYS. AYS is more than just initials - itis a school sponsered or- ganization that serves the community, its people, and the school. The majority of the funds raised went towards a much overlooked yet very im- portant community service: street signs. That's right - street signs. Do you think they grow on trees? The club arranged for signs pointing towards Kennedy to be errected on some major intersections in the area. The money for these signs was A.Y.S. Wait! VVho's in charge here? The aim of the four service organiza- tions here at Kennedy is twofold: to serve school and community with ardor and responsibility, and to have a great time doing it. It is apparent that this year's service clubs have accomplished just that. The Key Club, Interact, AYS, and The Leo Club have all undertaken worthwhile programs which served many areas of school and community life this year. As far as achievements go, the Kennedy Key Club has seen a remarkable success- ful year. With guidance from Mr. Forrest, the Key Club has proved to be one of the most important organizations in the school. Many prolific activities were or- ganized, and they were well accepted by the student body. The Key Club was one of the school's major fund raisers this year. Many events were held and monies collected during the course of the year. In October a slave auctioni' was held. Anyone could buy a member of the Key Club and become a master for three hours. Following the success of the slave auc- tion, several other worthwhile activities were held. In memory of Ann Lipshitz Ca former Kennedy studentj, popcom ker- nels were sold throughout the community and the monies collected donated to Can- cer Care, the sale of famous Freihoffer Cookies fbrought from Albany by Mr. F orrestj raised money for charity, eight loaves of bread were sold by each mem- ber to raise money for the March of Dimes, fund raising fvia bell ringingj was the club's contribution to the Salvation Army, world hunger was decreased slight- ly due to the many cans of food collected by the club during its canned food drive, and a needy family fmentioned in News- day? was adopted and sent desperately needed money. In addition to fund raising, the Key Club provided many services to both the school and the community. As for the community, the club held a luncheon and dance for the elderly at a neighborhood temple, the members answered letters sent to Santa Claus by a community ele- mentary school classg and the club spon- sered a blood drive in February which raised over one hundred pints. The Key Club is really an invaluable service organization which must be com- mended on its fine job this year. It has proved itself to be an integral part in the functioning of Kennedy High School. Ask anyone in Kennedy, who sells those delicious donuts after school? and the answer is inevitable. Interact - Ken- nedyis one and only famous donut selling organization - has been very active this year. However, Interact, the student arm of Rotary International, does much more than just feed Kennedy students. The or- ganization made many charitable contri- butions to a variety of worthy organiza- tions.
