Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1972 volume:

the . . . nineteen hundred and seventy-two 1972 Kenala Dedication Mrs. Yvlette Savage has oc- cupied a special space in our hearts, especially these last three years that she served as our spon- sor. We have a deep apprecia- tion for her ability to understand our problems and a respect for her patience in helping us reach their solution. We think of her for passing over all the flaws she saw in us and for drawing out in- to tire'light the best of our char- acter. The Seniors of 1972 are proud to dedicate this volume to her. 3 I know not what the day may bring . . . 4 Tomorrow waits unknown 5 I know not where my paths may lead . . . 6 If my steps be weak or strong. 7 I know not as I voyage forth What new songs or chants I may chance to sing. ____________F 9 I know not when life's day will close . . . 10 As that ole bell seems forbidden to ring! ii 12 A dministratio 13 Riley McGee, Principal Mr. Riley McGee has been principal here at Ken- nedy for the past twelve years. He received his B.S. degree from Livingston and obtained his Masters from the University of Alabama. Officially he is the prin- cipal, but in reality he's our counselor and our under- standing friend. 14 SUSAN WRIGHT Jr. High English COACH STEVE McCALEB Science and P. E. L. C. A variety of projects have been presented this year by Mrs. Yvelette Savage, Senior High teacher, and Miss Susan Wright, Jr. High teacher. 18 History Taking us back in time, Mr. L. C. Steedley has guided us to try and understand the events of years before up to today's history. With trials and debates that have helped recreate events, and with trips to historic places, history has become a living subject here at Kennedy. 19 Science Mr. Terry Dillard and Coach Steve McCaleb, lead students into the mysteries of science, biology, and chemistry. By means of ex- periments and lab work, these courses bring much enjoyment as well as knowledge. 20 Speech Now in its third year, speech is still a popular and varied class. Students, under the direction of Miss Susan Wright, learn to give presentations and speeches with the greatest of ease. Along with regular class-work the students prepared plays that were presented to the student body. 21 Business Education To help us in later life, Mrs. J acqueline Hughes teaches us the fundamentals of typing and business. The typing classes enjoy the many projects they undertake to help them learn everything they can about the business world. 22 Agriculture Need a job done? The Ag. boys are generally always there to do it - from pouring concrete to pruning trees. M. E. Karr, the Voc. Ag. teacher, is there to direct and guide them. Home Economics Learning the art of cooking, sewing, and home management is the objective of this organization. Asa goal, they aim toward to- morrow by learning today. The classes are taught by Mrs. Bryant. 23 Math From fractions to equations, Mr. Terry Dillard explains them all. By means of audio-visuals and repeated work with math processes, the course is instilled in the students' minds. Drivers Ed. The drivers education course tries to instill in every beginning driver the safe and skillful way to operate a car. Mrs. Truelove teaches these techniques. 24 Music Say it with music is the purpose of Mrs. Elizabeth Vick’s music classes. Each class gets to sing songs from rhythm and blues to current hits. The students also learn about the composers and their works. 25 Physical Education High on the popularity list is the class of P. E. Here, everyone can get rid of tension and start enjoying life with the help of such games like badminton to football. Instructors for these classes are Mrs. Laudice Junkins, Coach Steve McCaleb, and Coach Bill Trull. 26 Organizations 27 Sr. Beta Club Richard White President Max Junkins Vice President Bill Dorroh Secretary George Newman T reasurer 28 Jr. Beta Club Johnny Powell President Brenda Wilson Vice-President Wanda White Secretary Pam Madison T reasurer 29 Sandy Porter President 30 Frankel Hunnicut President Max Junkins Vice-President Richard White Secretary Bill Gilliam - Treasurer Dennis Madison - Reporter John McDaniel - Sentinel F. We would also like to thank Mr. Wayne McDaniel, from Belmont Studios, for being kind enough to come to the school and to our games to make pictures. The staff also wants to state their appreciation to Mr. Jimmy Elmore for his advice and instructions on putting our annual together. 37 Pep Club President Delores Gilliam Vice President Jane Davis Secretary Wanda White Library Staff Lillie Storey Jane Davis Brenda Higdon Delores Gilliam 38 A thletics 39 Football (71-72) Disappointment could be a key word in the 1971-72 football season for Kennedy. Since losing only 5 starters, we had a promise for going over the .500 mark, but with a score of injuries we succeeded in only a 3-10 season. Four of these were lost by one touchdown. 42 43 MAX JUNKINS 4 Letters FRANKEL HUNNICUTT 4 Letters BILL DORROH 3 Letters MIKE TRULL 3 Letters RONNIE BARRETT JAMES GILPIN RANDY JUNKINS DENNIS MADISON 3 Letters 3 Letters 3 Letters 3 Letters JOHN Me DANIEL TOMMY WEATHERS MIKE ALDRIDGE KENNETH HAYDEN 3 Letters 3 Letters 2 Letters 2 Letters 44 PAUL COOPER KENNY NABORS MIKE NEWMAN ANDY FOSTER 2 Letters 1 Letter 1 Letter 1 Letter RICKY RUSHING 1 Letter WILLIAM SUDDUTH 1 Letter ANDY HANNAH 1 Letter RODNEY HANNAH 1 Letter 45 Basketball (71-72) 46 For ten years, basketball at Kennedy has been just a gap fil- ler between football season and spring training. The 1971-72 team had a slow beginning, los- ing 9 out of our first 10 games. Then during the latter half of the season, we got it together, taking 2nd place in the North- side Invitational, 3rd in the Conference, and winning Area 11. At the end of the season our record was 14-16, winning 12 out of our last 17 games. The future looks bright with four starters returning. 47 ALFRED DIXON 2 Letters Senior BILL DORROH 2 Letters Senior GEORGE NEWMAN 2 Letters Senior MIKE RUSHING 2 Letters Senior MIKE TRULL 1 Letter Senior WALTER POOLE 1 Letter Senior DENNIS MADISON 1 Letter Junior PAUL COOPER 1 Letter Sophomore KENNETH HAYDEN 1 Letter Sophomore 48 49 Baseball ’72 UN-SURPRISING is a good word for the Kennedy High School NINE this year. With strong returnees from last year the team came out conference champs, un- defeated, and all the way to the Regional where they were downed after extra innings and denied a state play-off birth. There are thoughts of the past year, both happy and sad. And there are thoughts of the future, perhaps wondering, perhaps full of plans for the days ahead. If there are fearful thoughts, let us try trust; if there are gloomy thoughts, let us look to the sun- rise of new hope.
