Cheering Loud Engrossed in Study . . . Hard at Work . . . Or Just Loafing Scientists . . . Actors . . . Artists . Athletes From the Youngest . . . to the Oldest. . . f Foreword This yearbook, as you've probably noticed, is quite different from any previous K.H.S, yearbook. There have been changes in general format, printing, binding, layout, and photography. As a matter of fact, nothing remains unchanged. We won’t try to enumerate or explain all these changes; we prefer to let the book speak for itself (You heard all about it during our sub- scription sales pitch, anyway). The result, we hope, is a year- book which will be enjoyed by you today, and treasured in years to come as a living reminder of this year. The Reflections staff would like to thank several people whose help has been invaluable: Mr. Jim Robbins, our wonder- fully congenial publisher’s representative; Mr. Nick Cottis, our wonderfully competent photographer; and Mrs. Bernice Bryant, our wonderfully hardworking and cooperative advisor. Mr. Riley McGee Mr. Riley McGee, principal, conjes from Fayette, Alabama, and attended Fayette High School. After getting his B.S. degree from Livingston State, he attended the University of Alabama where he received his Master's degree. This is Mr. McGee's fifth year at Kennedy. An amiable and easy-to-get-along-with princi- pal, Mr. McGee-is always joking or wisecracking with his students. Faculty MRS. WILLENA DAVIS MR. JAMES HUBBERT MRS. BILLIE HUBBERT MRS. LAUDICE JUNKINS MRS. LURLENE KARR MR. MARTIN E. KARR MRS. ELLEN McADAMS MRS. CAROLYN McGEE MRS. YVLETTE SAVAGE Staff Bus Drivers Ester Owens Horace Crowley Levoy Jones W. L. Trull Troy Prater Robert Porter Lunchroom Workers Mrs. Ethel Davis Clara Bea Hudson Jessie Vice Janitor Moses Campbell Vocational Agriculture To teach practical, usable knowledge of agriculture and shop practice is the aim of the Vocational Department. During the three years of Vo-Ag courses the students learn woodworking, metal working, and welding in addition to an extensive training in agriculture. Vo-Ag teacher M. E. Karr (at left) has taught at Kennedy 12 years. A graduate of Auburn University with an M.S. degree, he is an ardent Auburn booster. Mr. Karr, whose F.F.A. Judging teams have won several county, district and state contests, was recently awarded the honorary F.F.A. State Farmer Degree for his outstanding work. English Some people don't realize that English is one of the most practical and usable subjects around. Usa- ble that is, if you consider being able to write clear- ly and speak understandably as being important. Be- sides being taught the use of the English language, students are introduced to rich and colorful history of English Literature. Mrs. Yvlette Savage is school English teacher and Librarian. Mrs. Savage, who has a M. A. Degree from the University of Alabama, has taught at Ken- nedy for 15 years. Mrs. Ellen McAdams teaches jun- ior high school English. Home Economics In the homemaking class girls learn how to participate more effectively in their present homes and how to prepare themselves for their responsibilities as future homemakers. In addi- tion to the usual home economics skills of cooking and sewing, the girls learn something about personal adjustment, child development, nutrition, consumer purchasing, first aid and practi- cally everything else having any application in the home. Mrs. Bernice Bryant, Home Economics teacher (at right), was born near Kennedy. After graduating from Kennedy High School she went to the University of Alabama where she got her B.S. Degree. Mrs. Bryant, who has one son, has been teaching at Kennedy for six years. Math Kennedy High School, in addition of of- fering courses in practical, general math, offers a solid college-prep background of al- gebra and geometry. Math teacher, Ray Graham, a graduate of Moulton High School, attended the University of Alabama and Flor- ence State. This is Mr. Graham's first year at Kennedy. Science The activities of a science class are many and varied, just as Science is a broad and fascinating subject. At any given time Mrs. junkins' classes might be dissecting a frog, peering through a micro- scope, watching bacteria prowl in the light of a microprojector, or searching the woods for specimens to study. Mrs. Laudice Junkins, who has taught at Kennedy 13 years, holds a B.S. Degree from Florence State. Social Studies The social studies program familiarizes the student with the geography of our earth, the old world background that brought about the discovery of America, and the heritage that is ours in this country. In Civics class the student learns the meaning of citizenship. Democracy class gives the student an understanding of our government and how it operates. The study of Econom- ics helps the student to be ready to face the business world. This program is carried on by excel- lent textbooks, workbooks, term papers, projects, student-drawn maps, and field trips. Senior high social studies courses are taught by Mrs. Ellen McAdams. Mrs. McAdams, who has a B.S. Degree from Florence State, has taught at Kennedy 22 years. Coach James Hubbert teaches junior high school social studies subjects. Physical Education A sound mind in a sound body is the general goal of educa- tion and a sound body is the job of the P. E. department. Calis- thenics and vigorous sports are included in the program, along with much running. (For an A” grade, the P. E. boys were required to run 3 1 2 miles in one period.) This produces the toned muscles, hearty appetites, and general good health which are the results of real physical fitness. Coach Hubbert Coach James Hubbert was born and reared near Fayette and graduated from Fayette High School. He received his B.S.E. Degree from Delta State College where he was an outstanding football player, making the Small College All American Team. This was Coach's first year at Kennedy. 1963 was a rebuilding year for the Kennedy Yellow Jackets. With only three starters and few other experienced players returning this season, Coach Hubbert faced the job of building a team from an inexperienced group of boys. The season began poorly; of the first seven games, Kennedy managed only a 6-0 win over Vina. Coach Hubbert's Jackets played some first-rate football (whipping Berry for three quarters, for example), but not with consistency enough! to win. Toward the end of the season, things finally began to click for the Jack” n a losing battle against Sulligent they connected for 20 points. The following wee . • -ay romped over Palmetto 32 to 13; and the next week won a solid 19 to 0 victory over Nortuside. In a hard fought 19 to 19 tie with Hubbertville, the Jackets capped an otherwise mediocre season with a strong and promising finish. The Squad A hard-knocking line-backer drill was part of this jacket practice session. Here, Charles Corbett tackles Bobby Joe Crowley. Offense Defense Jimmy Don Crowley quarter- backs the offensive unit during a practice scrimmage. This record was not helped by the fact that about half the squad became ineligible when the first semester grades were reported. Kennedy, nevertheless, played some excellent basketball, and added one trophy (sec- ond place, conference tournament) to the school's col- lection. Star of the Jacket squad was center Kenneth Goose” Crowe, who averaged better than 20 points per game and made the All-Conference team. Spring Training Teams that win in the Fall are built in the Spring, and this year's spring training team looked good. Althought hampered by a lack of experience, the squad showed no lack of desire. They hit well, re- marked Coach Hubbert. Baseball The '64 Kennedy baseball team had a record of 2 wins and 8 losses. Several of the losses, however, were by narrow mar- gins or in extra innings. The Junior class created a winter scene complete with sleigh, snow-covered pines, and Frosty the Snowman. The entertainment, pro- vided by the sophomore class, included a snowball fight,” and comedy routine by Brenda Johnson, Terry Cash, and Fred Trull. Yearbook Staff Making a yearbook is a big job, and this year’s yearbook staff shot hundreds of pic- tures, worked hundreds of hours, and raised hundreds of dollars to pay for the whole thing. Ronny Davis - Secretary Sonny Cork - President The newest of the Kennedy student organizations, the Junior Beta Club, is only in its second year of existence. The Junior Beta Club is the junior high school counterpart of the Beta Club, and has the same scholastic requirements (85 average in all subjects), and the same sponsor (Mrs. Savage). This year's Beta project is a banquet, sponsored jointly by the Junior and Senior clubs, celebrating the twentieth anniver- sary of Kennedy's Beta Club. Beta Club OFFICERS (left to tight) Paul Nolen - Secretary Wanda Land - Treasurer Cherry Jones - Reporter Vickey Junkins - Vice-President Johnny McAdams - President Let us lead by serving others, is a motto which the Beta Club strives to put into practice. In this period 4-H has also expanded from an organization of purely rural youth to include small town and urban young people. In addition to learning how to raise bigger livestock, grow more corn, and produce more cotton, 4-Hers carry on projects in such diverse and useful fields as home and yard improvement, home gardening, sew- ing, canning, food preparation, and lampmaking.
