THE GOLDEN ROD 1949 Published by the Students of KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL Kennedy, Alabama FOREWORD Here, within the pages of The Golden Rod, we have attempted to capture and hold for all time the reflection and spirit of our life at Kennedy High. We have recorded the activities and ideals of our school life with the true simplicity of everyday speech and thought. To The Golden Rod we give the task of keeping alive the joys and triumphs of '49. DEDICATION To Miss Inez Douglas, we, the Senior Class of Kennedy High School, dedi- cate this, the first Volume of The Golden Rod, as a token of our love and ap- preciation for the kind assistance she has given us through the years; for her faithful guidance in our trials and pleasures; for the love, understanding and interest she has shown everyone. J. C. WALLACE, Principal Another milestone in the history of Kennedy High School is successfully passed under the leadership of the Principal, J. C. Wallace. Patiently has he guided the faculty and students. His endeavors for the general welfare of the school has been indefatigable. It can well be said of him: There was his duty to be done-- And he did it. No thought of glory to be won; There was his duty to be done- And he did it. Mr. Wallace is concerned only in promoting the best interests of all. Truly can it be said of his daily living that he gives of his best to the Master. Then this tribute best fits him: To love and serve--that only is a great life. INEZ DOUGLAS MR. J. C. WALLACE principal MRS. J. C. WALLACE Home Economics MR. J. O. WILLIS Coach--Science MR. E. M. As we leave old Kennedy school behind. We go out into the world to see what we can find. The path may be long, rugged, and steep; To make a success we must not go to sleep. We must not hide behind a tree or bush; The Door to success is labeled “Push” Some may go North, South, East, or West- The thing to remember we must do our best, With an open heart and a willing mind, We can soon see our way as we begin to climb. Each must remember to put a shoulder to the wheel Then you can see success with a Great Big Yield. We must ever be ready to lend a hand Tohelp some neighbor whenever we can. If scattered abroad on land or sea, There is always work wherever we may be. We must not hide behind a tree or bush For the Door to success is labeled “Push . Anita Cline Class Poet SENIOR CLASS HISTORY When school opened on September 3, 1945, the Junior Ill’s were happy be- cause it was their last year in Junior High School and we were initiated into the F.H.A. and F.F.A. There was one addition to our class this year, Ovella Burgess. On September 2, 1946, we were glad to enter Senior High School and to have Mrs. J. C. Richardson as our.sponsor. The following people did not return to help us work toward our senior goal: Catherine Pasley, Jewel Vice, and Harlon Ray Moore. On entering school September 1, 1947, it was hard to realize that we were Senior II’s and we had Mrs. E. M. Baker as our sponsor.. Several people in- cluding Minnie Ruth Johnson, Kittie Mae Prater, Beechil Dollar, Craig Davis, Mary Martha Taylor, Ann Appling, Carolyn Skelton, Beatrice McAteer, Jean Walden, Bobby Jones, Mack Wilson, and Tony Breshenam, did not return this year. We produced the play Aunt Tillie Goes To Town under the direction of our sponsor, Mrs. Baker. There was one addition to our class this year, Mary Sue Hamm. We looked forward to the opening of school on August 23, 1948, because this year was to be the highlight of our school career. We were fortunate to have Miss Inez McDowell, who on November 25, became Mrs. J. C. Wallace, our sponsor. We were sorry that the following people did not return this year: Faustine Rainwater, Margie Nell Porter, Thaxton Cline, and Denton Sparks. We welcomed the following to our senior class: Beatrice McAteer, Betty Pat- terson, Jean Walden, and Bobby Jones. Only six students have been through the twelve years together, sharing the fun and disappointments: Patricia Blay- lock, Vaudine Higdon, Edra Lee Rushing, Geraldine Hunnicutt, Ray Foster, and Robert Crowley. This year the class produced the play A Case Of Springtime and published this annual under the efficient direction of our sponsor, Mrs. Wallace. Now we have come to the end of our high school career and for us, The door to success is labeled Push . Class Historian GERALDINE HUNNICUTT SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY As I sit here gazing into the crystal ball of the future, I see what fate has in store for my fellow classmates. Ten years have rolled by and each has made a start toward his ca- reer. I see a young science teacher in the University of Alabama. Yes--it’s Pat Blaylock. Who is the young woman now selling jewelry for her husband? It must be Kathleen Brown. Robert Crowley has made a fortune on his large dairy and fruit farm in the Sacramento Valley. Who is the sweet little secretary to John D. Rockefeller? It's no one else but Vaudine Higdon. Anita Cline is now chief operator of the Bell Telephone Co. in New York City. Ray Foster and Gilbert Stokes are both in command of two large Marine fleets. The sweet little housewife with red-headed twins is no other than Mary Sue Hamm. I Billy Johnson is now Head of the Agriculture Dept, of Alabama. He is assisted by Hellon Vice, his wife and secretary. Edra Lee Rushing is now a public stenographer in the Waldorf-Astoria. Dale Jones has a big cattle ranch in Texas. Sis Junkins is secretary to her husband, who is President of the First National Bank in Fernbank. Bobby Jones has made an outstanding career for himself. He is head chemical engineer for DuPont Research Laboratories. Brooks Rushing is now a commanding officer of the occupation forces in Germany. Betty Patterson is now keeping books for her husband who owns a large lumber company in South Alabama. Geraldine Hunnicutt is now designing clothes for New York's most ex- clusive department store. Beatrice McAteer is the private secretary of the President of the United States. Cemon Johnson is now coaching at Notre Dame. He was voted outstanding coach of '59. Jean Walden is now secretary to the President of the Standard Oil Com- pany. The crystal ball is growing dim, but I see myself as assistant operator of the Bell Telephone Company in New York City. OVELLA BURGESS Class Prophet LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of 1949, having come to the end of our journey in Kennedy High School, do ordain and establish this our Last Will and Testa- ment. Johnson, Robert Crowley leaves his book on “How to stay Short in Five Easy Lessons To Lavelle Prater, Geraldine Hunnicutt leaves her knowledge on keeping quiet. To Wincie Nell Higdon, Edra Lee Rushing and Vaudine Higdon leave their love for fun and laughter. To Robert Sparks, Dale Jones leaves his speed in typing. HOMECOMING SNAPSHOTS A MS SNAPSHOTS c, p Two of a kind Steve Vlllla Coach of ’70 Coollnr. off The fall of 1948 brought a new coach to Kennedy High, not only new to the school, but new to the field of coaching. Yet as ably as a professional. Coach Willis guided and trained the Yellow Jackets. Through his untiring efforts and continuous encouragement he taught the boys to Play up! Play up! and play the game . Through his wise coaching the Yellow Jackets swarmed the fields of play, fearlessly encountering their many opponents. Having fought each game fair- ly, no matter the result, there was that satisfaction of having done their best. Here's to Coach Willis and the Yellow Jackets of 1949.
