Rose of Gerard This year's Fall play was held on De- cember 17 and 18, 1987. The play was written by Mr. Patrick Butler. The Rose of Gerard is a serious dramatic play with an all girl cast. The play presents a rich old lady named Miss Beatrice Jaffey iBrandy Lynchl who was without heirs. She con- sidered her neighbors, the Abraham Lincoln League for a Better America and the St. Joseph orphanage for illegi- tamate children. The Abraham Lincoln League was a communist front while the orphanage was against her princi- ples. She asked a reporter, Lee Gor- don, tJamie Skrezynal to arbitrate. She came with her photographer, Millie Mack, lJulie Farrelll. Miss Jaffey's gardener, Gerard, had died in a drunken accident. Many sus- pected a love affair, but she denied it. When he died, her favorite rose bush stopped blooming. Since then, there have been no males in the house. Lee Gordon arranged for sisters from the orphanage to visit regarding the be- quest. The sisters who met Miss Jaffey were Sister Gerard lAmy Cullenl and Sister Louis Melanie Lidenl. One rainy night Miss Jaffey went outside to talk to Gerard's rose bush. Miss Ranger Uennifer Feronel, her sec- lretary, and Vera fKrista Travisl, the maid, asked her to come in, but she stayed outside and caught pneumonia. Her doctor lPatricia Moyl could not come because the road was washed out. Sister Michael lKim Kozioll, a nurse, and other nuns came.to help. Miss Jaffey recovered and decided to leave the money to the Abraham Lin- coln League. Later Miss Jaffey learns that Sister Gerard had died because she had come to help her. Sister Ge- rard left her rosary to Miss Jaffey who threw it aside. Just then, Vera came in with a rose off of Gerard's rose bush and Miss Jaffey began to doubt her de- cision. Pictures: 1.
