The Sound of Music QQQQI . , T' K I ' g, ' Y -Y X f 'l S A 3 . fl ati -a-nh XE f if-f The spring musical-The Sound of Music-by Rodgers and Hammerstein, was performed by the Kennedy Players on the nights of April 2, 3, and 4 of 1987. lt was directed by Mr. Patrick Butler who dedicated it to his father. The play is a familiar one since it was made into a movie which was shown on television and had a successful run on Broadway. The play is about Maria Rainer, fBrandy Lynchl who is assigned by the Mother Abbess fAngela Leverettel to go to Captain Georg Von Trapp fDaniel Paluckl's military run home to watch over his seven children, Liesl Mamie Skre- zynal, Friedrich fJohn Lynchl, Lousia fRachel Morrowl, Kurt fDan Skrezynall, Brigitta Uennifer Butlerl, Marta KAmanda Augustinel, and Gretl fSheila Girardl. The play is set just before World War Il in Austria and a love, unknown to Maria and the captain, blossoms among all the chaos of pre-war activities, but the captain has another woman, Elsa Schrader fRoxanne De Dorel whom he was seeing before Maria came. When Maria realizes she is in love with Captain Von Trapp, she feels guilty for her love and returns to the Abby, After a talk with Mother Abbess, Maria realizes she shouldn't run from her problems and returns to the captain's home only to find out the captain has gotten engaged to Elsa Schrader while she was gone. Later the captain realizes that he is truely in love with Maria, so the engagment is anulled and he marries Maria. The captain's friend, Max Detweiler fTim Macekl, enters the children into the Kaltzberg music festival against the captain's wishes. Later the captain gets a letter in which the Nazis command him to report to duty in their navy. He is totally against the principles of the Nazis and does not want to report to duty, so they decide to escape to Switzerland fa neutral countryl, before it's too late. The only night to escape would be the night of the concert, so after they sing, they leave to go to Switzerland. They are followed so they take refuge in the Abby and go on by foot over the mountains to their freedom and new life. 14 0 L i Fw K N. A - if

eaoher's Stri 5 I Kr if .N sw. N ' SSE-.. : E.L. - , ke Breaks a Record! If any vacation was unwanted, it was the nineteen days students and school personnel were out of school during the 1987 strike. There have been eight teachers strikes in nineteen years, but the 1987 strike was the longest. The main issues of the strike were the teacher's demands for a raise and fewer students per class. The Board of Education said that they had no money. Noegitations started in the spring of 1987, but money issues did not hit the table until October 5th. Jackie Vaughn, President of the Teachers Union, and Frank Gardner President of the Board of Education did not anticipate the trouble they would face during the strike. Negotiations during the first few weeks of the strike produced nothing. Governor Thompson said he could do nothing and Mayor Harold Washington said it was none of his business. The legislature would not meet until October. With no movement from negotiations, par- ents became frantic and both parents and children began to protest and demonstrate. There was a large protest rally held across from City Hall. Angry parents and students were demanding Mayor Washington become involved. The pressure became very strong and Mayor Washington de- manded round the clock negotiations which finally produced an agreement. The teachers received a 4-'70 pay raise, but the School Board promised that before long many teachers would be layed off. None of the parties involved were satisfied with the results. 519 7 gf I6
