Many spectators of all ages left schools, stores, and offices to see decorated cars from the Spanish Club, Kennedy Players, Invictus, Key Club, H.E.R.O. and Mr. Wiberg with his mini car. Also there were floats decorat- ed to show how the Crusaders were going to beat the Admi- rals. The Majorettes, Cheerleaders, Invictus, and the King and Queen all had splendid floats. The band worked hard to put on a great performance for their neighborhood. The Majorettes and the Cheerleaders led the parade followed by the band. This year the fire truck was at a fire and could not transport the football team. The clubs had candy to give to all the children at Byrne Elementary School where the chil- dren came out to see the parade. 9 AQ' 3 .1- Pep Rally Fires Up Crusaders! The play is a familiar one since it was made into a movie which was shown on television and had a successful run on Broadway. The play is about Maria Rainer, fBrandy Lynchl who is assigned by the Mother Abbess fAngela Leverettel to go to Captain Georg Von Trapp fDaniel Paluckl's military run home to watch over his seven children, Liesl Mamie Skre- zynal, Friedrich fJohn Lynchl, Lousia fRachel Morrowl, Kurt fDan Skrezynall, Brigitta Uennifer Butlerl, Marta KAmanda Augustinel, and Gretl fSheila Girardl. The play is set just before World War Il in Austria and a love, unknown to Maria and the captain, blossoms among all the chaos of pre-war activities, but the captain has another woman, Elsa Schrader fRoxanne De Dorel whom he was seeing before Maria came. When Maria realizes she is in love with Captain Von Trapp, she feels guilty for her love and returns to the Abby, After a talk with Mother Abbess, Maria realizes she shouldn't run from her problems and returns to the captain's home only to find out the captain has gotten engaged to Elsa Schrader while she was gone. Later the captain realizes that he is truely in love with Maria, so the engagment is anulled and he marries Maria. The captain's friend, Max Detweiler fTim Macekl, enters the children into the Kaltzberg music festival against the captain's wishes. Later the captain gets a letter in which the Nazis command him to report to duty in their navy. He is totally against the principles of the Nazis and does not want to report to duty, so they decide to escape to Switzerland fa neutral countryl, before it's too late. The only night to escape would be the night of the concert, so after they sing, they leave to go to Switzerland. They are followed so they take refuge in the Abby and go on by foot over the mountains to their freedom and new life. 14 0 L i Fw K N. If any vacation was unwanted, it was the nineteen days students and school personnel were out of school during the 1987 strike. There have been eight teachers strikes in nineteen years, but the 1987 strike was the longest. The main issues of the strike were the teacher's demands for a raise and fewer students per class. The Board of Education said that they had no money. Noegitations started in the spring of 1987, but money issues did not hit the table until October 5th. Jackie Vaughn, President of the Teachers Union, and Frank Gardner President of the Board of Education did not anticipate the trouble they would face during the strike. Negotiations during the first few weeks of the strike produced nothing. Governor Thompson said he could do nothing and Mayor Harold Washington said it was none of his business. The legislature would not meet until October. With no movement from negotiations, par- ents became frantic and both parents and children began to protest and demonstrate. There was a large protest rally held across from City Hall. Angry parents and students were demanding Mayor Washington become involved. The pressure became very strong and Mayor Washington de- manded round the clock negotiations which finally produced an agreement. The teachers received a 4-'70 pay raise, but the School Board promised that before long many teachers would be layed off. None of the parties involved were satisfied with the results. 519 7 gf I6 H nors kfast an We Eg f W' W was is .s 'R l 'Mu 2 i The annual Honors Breakfast recognized students who achieved a grade point average of 4.0 or higher. The play was written by Mr. Patrick Butler. The Rose of Gerard is a serious dramatic play with an all girl cast. The play presents a rich old lady named Miss Beatrice Jaffey iBrandy Lynchl who was without heirs. She con- sidered her neighbors, the Abraham Lincoln League for a Better America and the St. Joseph orphanage for illegi- tamate children. The Abraham Lincoln League was a communist front while the orphanage was against her princi- ples. She asked a reporter, Lee Gor- don, tJamie Skrezynal to arbitrate. She came with her photographer, Millie Mack, lJulie Farrelll. Miss Jaffey's gardener, Gerard, had died in a drunken accident. Many sus- pected a love affair, but she denied it. When he died, her favorite rose bush stopped blooming. Since then, there have been no males in the house. Lee Gordon arranged for sisters from the orphanage to visit regarding the be- quest. The sisters who met Miss Jaffey were Sister Gerard lAmy Cullenl and Sister Louis Melanie Lidenl. One rainy night Miss Jaffey went outside to talk to Gerard's rose bush. Miss Ranger Uennifer Feronel, her sec- lretary, and Vera fKrista Travisl, the maid, asked her to come in, but she stayed outside and caught pneumonia. Her doctor lPatricia Moyl could not come because the road was washed out. Sister Michael lKim Kozioll, a nurse, and other nuns came.to help. Miss Jaffey recovered and decided to leave the money to the Abraham Lin- coln League. Later Miss Jaffey learns that Sister Gerard had died because she had come to help her. Sister Ge- rard left her rosary to Miss Jaffey who threw it aside. Just then, Vera came in with a rose off of Gerard's rose bush and Miss Jaffey began to doubt her de- cision. Pictures: 1. The business men who make up the local Kiwanis Clubs are leaders in their professions and community and have banded together to exchange useful ideas, to raise the standards of business and professional ehtics, to enjoy the fellowship of other commu- nity leaders, and to provide altruistic service for their com- munities whenever the opportunity arises. Since its incep- tion, Kiwanis has directed a great deal of its service program toward youth and its problems. Concern for underprive- leged children has resulted in a host of Kiwanis sponsored summer camps, provisions for health examinations, person- al guidance for juvenile delinquents, assistance toexisting agencies in setting up recreation centers providing vocation- al guidance, etc.and programs to stress importance of the home and school. One of the vital youth projects of Kiwanis, which offers a program unique among youth groups, is the Key Club. In it there is a fusing of Kiwanis citizenship services and the youth services. The emphasis is different, for the Key Club, instead of providing services to under privileged children alone, is an opportunity through which the leaders and potential leaders of all high school age groups are given a chance to develop their initiative and leadership ability by undertaking a pro- gram of service in the high school and the community similar to that of the Kiwanis Club. Through the example of Kiwanis, the Key Clubbers learn their prospective adult roles in life, the meaning of serviceable, and develop an aggressive citizenship which is necessary for the mainte- nance of our democratic way of life. They played some very good teams but finished with a record of 3 wins and 11 losses. De- spite their record the team made it to the City Playoffs but lost in the first round to Robeson. This year's high scorer is Corey Russell. The team never gave up, they played at full speed. Pictures: 1. Kenneth Polk receiving a pass. 2. Corey Russel heading down court. 3. This years Frosh-Soph Basketball team was mostly made up of fresh- men who lacked expierence. The team had a record of 2 wins and 12 losses. Despite some players mov- ing to varsity, next years' team should do better with the players having had more playing expier- ence. The team tried their hardest and never stop trying. The Frosh- Soph basketball is an opportuntiy for players to get the feel of playingiin games and pashing up thier skills before moving to var- sity. 0 I' 67 1987 Softball Team Row 1: Carrie Helson, Brenda Martello, Latonya Jones, Anita Brown, Row 2: Coach Lemke, Ro- shanda Jones, Kathy Beckerl, Michelle Christo- pherg Row 3: Joan Russo, Maria Molinaro, Sue Lave, Karen Baumhardt, April Haynes, 1987 Varsity Baseball Row 1: Tom Schaeffer, Bill Wasowicz, David Harden, Chuck Berry, Don Pencikg Row 2.
