GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT U'm'1y MA Through the Guidance Department of J.F.K. many students receive counseling and evaluation of their student ability. Vkfhether the advice is followed or the near-prophesies come true depends on the student himself. The various careers of graduates and their degree of success may have had their origins in the Hall of Counselors? Otelia D. Grant Hampton Institute, B.S. Com- pleting your basic education and leaving the hallowed halls of John F. Kennedy, as marked by your gradu- ation or commencement, is in reality the beginning of your adult life-a life that should be full of good deeds. a wholesome life-one that will make a very worthwhile contribution to improving mankind in his inter-relationship with each other. I ask that each and every one of you, during every moment of your life, strive toward the building of a genuine sense of community in our great country. Genuine community requires compassion, the proper use of our natural resources, helping thy neighbor, fol- lowing the Golden Rule. The physical community has been thrust upon us-genuine community will require a human achievement. Its achievement will not be easy, for too many believe it is more fun to hate than to love. You are living in a society of variety. Help make it work. Be tolerant of people with widely differing abili- ties and find joy in helping them all move forward at their optimum pace. Find happiness and fulfillment, not in power-in domination-in self-destructive greed and materialism-but in helping others to find value in their lives. Strive for a goal that is more satisfying than affluence, more humane than peace and class strife and more decent that self-indulgence. Don't forget the lessons of the past. The great find- ings ofthe last 4,000 years, of which the United States is the heir, are as real and relevant to our immediate situation as any modern method or recent invention. To contrive to break-up the continuity of history, and to .fancy that in fundamental matters we can start all over again, is the greatest possible error. If you are to be condemned, be condemned for doing something rather than for doing nothing. But in doing, live by the Ten Commandments. The power they will give you will make your part of the genuine community. Work for a society based on real justice, sincerity and brotherhood. Robert A. Schmidt
