But inside, to the quiet cacaphony of clicking slide rules, squeaking chalk and tapping typewriters, Ken- nedy High is happening. For it is the tidal waves of bodies and blurred faces surging through the halls to class, the chalk wielding perpetrators of education, the quiet concentration of desk top doodlers, the mass hys- teria rocking the bleachers on pep rally days, and the furtive innocence ofthe lavatory smokers that make an ordinary, nondescript architectls nightmare into the Kennedy High we all know. Kennedy means different things to different people, to some itls an academic challenge, to others, the chal- lenge is to see how much they can pull over on the teachers. lt's a social center, a meeting place for friends, and unfortunately, sometimes a hostile con- frontation point for those with opposing views. But it also means some things to everybody-a football team that always wins Calmostj, morning announcements that nobody listens to, the last minute panic at the end of each marking period, and the wild exhilaration that sets in when June finally arrives. Each person is changed in some way by his years at K.H.S., and he in turn leaves some mark on the school, whether it be an academic or athletic honor, or a deathless message scribbled on the lavatory wall. Each individual moves up, however painfully, through the ranks until, finally senior graduation looms imme- diate, and then comes the time to reflect on all that made Kennedy special to us. On that final June day we will walk out the big glass doors in front, many of us for the last time, and move on. Kennedy will belong to another sea of faces. While all we carry with us are the memories, some good, some bad, some indifferent, maybe.
