Perhaps the best adjective one could use to describe the 1967 Gryphon basketball squad would be outstanding Outstanding not so much in over all record, but outstanding in an individual, play-by-play fashion. The Gryphons of 1967 suffered an infinite amount of heartbreak. Eleventh-hour defeats plagued Coach Vernon's squad all season. The Gryphons deserved better. They were fast, smooth, and sure-shooting. Actually, the only thing the Gryphons really lacked was a tall center. Yet despite this inadequacy, the Gryphons scared quite a few top South Jersey teams, among them Burlington, state Group II champions of 1966 and undefeated in the Burlington County League in 1967. With a scant four minutes left on the clock, the Gryphons were one point back and fighting hard. Although they finally lost the game, the Gryphons had the distinction of coming closest, of all area teams, to downing Burlington. This is just representative of the outstanding play, the outstanding spirit which marked the basketball Gryphons. They just never gave up.
