Kennedy High School-its past, its present and what lies ahead for its students. A High School is its students and in .l.F.K. there are many, over two thousand. They show a wide range of personalities, attitudes, and interests. Our high school offers them an extensive variety of activities and courses in an attempt to present something for everyone. The students show . . . 3 in all respects, the tremendous enthusiasm which makes a school great. A school does not simply exist, it must have a history. Schools in our town date back to the early nineteenth century, and to a one- room log cabin. The only early school which remains today is the 'flittle red school-house on Salem road. Before our first high school was built in 1960, students living in our community . . . attended Lenape Regional or Burlington High Schools. Levittown High School opened in a then uncompleted building which is now the Junior School. In 1964, as our school continued to grow, its name was changed to John F. Kennedy High School in honor of our late President. The student body faced still another 6 change in November of 1965. This time we were moved into the new, uncompleted building on Kennedy Way. That year we enjoyed five months of double sessions in both the old school and the new. This year the majority ofthe students returned as old hands, ready to make this year the best JFK has ever known. The students have always shown enthusiasm in supporting their school and participating in its activities, and this year is not an exception, There are many clubs, from the Curtain Callers. . . 8 K X if alt . iw X' ' f if 1 N fgplwf Q3 5. These include a football team that was undefeated last year and finished with a 8-I record this year, and a Cross Country Team that went to the State Finals. The JFK touch is easy to spot- look for intelligence, responsibility, and participation. These attributes constitute ninety per cent of the JFK appeal. The other ten per cent is spirit. This constantly drives more students to go farther, stay longer, through more adverse conditions to support their school than students from any other high school. This spirit is shown at its height during K -week, when banners and slogans decorate the school urging the team to beat Lenapef' I lu x ,np aa . 4 ' Pi . Theirs will be the task of furnishing the parents, teachers, and admin istrators of tomorrow. They will be responsible for helping rnake the world a better place in which to live. Until then, however, our responsibility is to our school, to make it the best possible . . . 1 1 1 i 1 1 15 I , i We are JFK. It is our responsibility to shape it as we shape ourselves, to make JFK into something noble and proud. V As our high school days quickly come to an end, it is time for us, the Class of '67, to take a minute and redect upon some of the memorable moments we spent at Kennedy High. Some of our memories will be happy, some will be sad, but there are a few worthy of notice. Six years ago we were seventh graders at Levittown High School. That year was the year of the twenty piece marching band without uniforms and the football team that could barely win a game. Our class did manage, however, to visit the Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg. Since that time we have watched our school and our world change and grow, and each of us has been a part of the change. Upon reaching eighth grade some of us found ourselves exiled to the Junior School, while the rest remained in the high school as punky 8-9ersf' Our Hrst Latin American exchange students arrived during the winter. By ninth grade we were back at the high school again. Janie Le Cates served as class president during this year of several firsts for the school. Scarlet and Navy Night was initiated and also the first inter-class drama competition. That was also the year of the big H-wing flood, the Gryphon painted on the floor, and the combined homeroom-hrst period. President John F Kennedy was assassinated. Finally tenth grade arrived, and the school was renamed John F. Kennedy High School. For the first time we weren't the youngest in the school. Cathy Breen was elected president and under her direction we succeeded in getting our memorable trip to the World's Fair. This was the year of the first Student Council Carnival, Bermuda Day, and the hrst Youth in Government Program. Eleventh grade was a year of change. We moved into a brand new school after several enjoyable months of split sessions. Cathy Breen was re-elected president, and we sponsored the second Junior-Senior Party. Our football team won the South Jersey Championship that year, and several members of our class were selected to participate on the television program, lt's Academic. This year also saw the advent of the student lunch strike. Now our year as mighty seniors is rapidly coming to a close. For many, this was the biggest and best year of all. Under the leadership of Dave Kerrins we held the hrst all-senior prom at the Rickshaw Inn. We all remember our great Splash Party at Olympia Lakes and our fabulous trip to Washington, D. C., where we visited the Capitol, the White House, the Smithsonian Institute, and Arlington Cemetery, paying tribute to the man for whom our school was named, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Dave Kincaid headed Student Council and with him we saw the success of many school activities. The senior boys cheering section was started and our basketball team won their first tournament game. Soon we will bid farewell to KHS forever, as we walk down the aisle to receive our diplomas. Wherever we are, whatever we do in future years, sometimes we'll think about our experiences at Kennedy High School, and hope we are better human beings because of them. What more can be said for a football season which included, among other things, a few near tragedies, tre- mendous student body response, and a respectable 8-I record? What more can be said about the dripping wet Camden game, where 250 loyal Kennedy fans braved nature's wrath to spur our boys on? In what other way can be expressed our disappointment at the heartbreaking Rancocas game, where our sickness-- ridden but ever tenacious team battled right to the end in a game much closer than the score would seem to indicate. And then the comeback, our last four games, in which we scored 142 points while our opponents gained a grand total of 6. All that can be hoped of our '67 team is that it matches this year's in tenacity, spirit, and hustle. If this happens, Gryphon rooters will again have cause to be proud of a dedicated, determined, and talented football squad. The spirited cheers seemed even livelier as the cheerleaders put their everything into them. The up- and-coming J V cheerleaders did their share, providing pep and spirit for their team. I -,rn -'X ' ' .X 2' , ' - , , me - Perhaps the best adjective one could use to describe the 1967 Gryphon basketball squad would be outstanding Outstanding not so much in over all record, but outstanding in an individual, play-by-play fashion. The Gryphons of 1967 suffered an infinite amount of heartbreak. Eleventh-hour defeats plagued Coach Vernon's squad all season. The Gryphons deserved better. They were fast, smooth, and sure-shooting. Actually, the only thing the Gryphons really lacked was a tall center. Yet despite this inadequacy, the Gryphons scared quite a few top South Jersey teams, among them Burlington, state Group II champions of 1966 and undefeated in the Burlington County League in 1967. With a scant four minutes left on the clock, the Gryphons were one point back and fighting hard. Although they finally lost the game, the Gryphons had the distinction of coming closest, of all area teams, to downing Burlington. This is just representative of the outstanding play, the outstanding spirit which marked the basketball Gryphons. They just never gave up. Girls ended the year with memories of sewing aprons and seams, of having to eat those things they cooked, and of having to make a budget for themselves. With these experiences behind them, they will doubtlessly make excellent housewives. English Department Memories of book reports, compositions, and vocabulary tests flood the minds of Kennedy students when they recall their four years of High School English. That year the Class of '68 compiled a long list of accomplishments including receiving the prize for the best decorated hall during K-week and selling the most Betsy Ross Candy. The next year, as Sophomores, they started with a handicap-they were the low-men-on-the-totempole for the second year because of split-sessions. They did not let this stop them, however, and they went on to sponsor a smashing Hy Lit Record Hop, and order their class rings in May. Their memories of their Junior year begin with receiving their rings in October, and last through PSA Ts and SA Ts to the Junior Party in the spring. They organized a number of fund-raising projects such as shaker and horn sales, dances and bake sales. These were to help raise money for their Senior year. Already they are planning for their Senior Trip and Prom which they eagerly await. 157 o 1 fl lb '1 I-I Q' 9.1 37 H I 10 3 , Homeroom 146 Mr. Schleider . Lappas, S. . Knight, L. Linder, S. They swarrned the school as if they owned the place. Sure, why not? No longer was the class of '69 the underdog! With these sophomores came memories of a rather hectic Freshman year. Having been on split-sessions for the first half of the year, they were unaccustomed to normal high school life. They entered with a high and mighty shine which was soon marred by Kennedy High veterans along with their fellow freshmen, the 89'ers and the 8 Honor's, who were there before them. It was in their Freshman year that the 89-8 I-Ionor's program was discontinued. The two groups of freshmen met problems in getting together, but the situation was soon remedied with class elections. Once united, they successfully initiated the first annual Freshman Fun and F rolics With warm memories of the past and great hopes for the future, the class of '69 has big plans for subsequent years. The freshmen spent their nrst week finding study halls, opening lockers, and mistakenly trying to sit at senior lunch tables. Although it seemed like ages before they all knew where they were going, in a few short weeks, a class that had seemed hopeless to the upperclassmen and faculty was ready to take its rightful place in the activities of JFK. After the hrst excitement wore off, the freshmen narrowed their school lives down to an endless round of classes and study halls, which were broken by an occasional assembly. During these days, the freshmen took time to elect class officers who were: Patrice Parago, President, Cheryl Justice, Vice-President, Donna Lappas, Secretary, Linda Mount, Treasurer. Then with someone at their helm, they and their class advisor, Mr. Reiter, planned activities for that year. As the year progressed, the freshmen were absorbed into the school life, and spent the majority of their time learning the ropes that make our school run. Next year they will be ready to return as veterans, eager to initiate the new Freshman Class. 175 Homeroom 114 Dyer, S. Driscoll, B. Donnelly, D. Donzanti, D. DeLoche, D. DeMarco, B. Dillabough, S. Without industry and frugality nothing will do, and with them every- thing. He that gets all he can honestly and saves all he gets Cnecessary expenses exceptedj will cer- tainly become rich . . . The man's name was Benjamin Franklin. His son lived here in Willingboro and was the Governor of West Jersey. 186 eam brk On the football field or basketball court, teamwork is the key to success. The talent and ability of individuals may Vary, but without that vital ingredient-the ability to cooperate and work together- individual abilities are meaningless. Teamwork is also vital in any industrial enterprise. The Rohm and Haas team is made up of more than 12,000 men and women. At the Bristol Plant some 3,000 people produce hundreds of different chemicals-enzymes for the textile, food, and tanning trades, emulsions for paints, floor polishes, textiles, and paper coatings, Plexiglass acrylic plastic sheet and molding powder, insecticides, miticides . . . the list would fill a book. To do this a Variety of skills are required. Chemists, engineers, chemical operators, accountants, typists, stenographers, pipe-litters, mechanics, instrument men . . . there are few skills which are not represented on the Rohm and Haas team. We hope you will consider us when your education is completed. We have a number of positions for team players. f D Z Cl . Adams We dedicate GRYPHON '67 It is an unusual dedication that is found at the end of a yearbook, but George M. Adams is an unusual man. As a member of the Kennedy faculty for the past six years, Mr. Adams has not confined his activities solely to teaching. In addition to his duties as Art Department Chairman, he has found time to advise both the Chess Club and Art-Niks. For the past Eve years, Mr. Adams has been an able and amiable advisor to the Gryphon SIHH. He has carried us through the many problems that must be overcome to produce a good yearbook. I, as editor, am sure that all previous Gryphon staffs would join us in expressing our appreciation for the assistance, time and patience he has given us all. In recognition of this, we, the stajj', dedicate the 1967 Gryphon. G.M.R. 199 A An intimate message from the sponsor: I guess I made my yirst mistake when I was two years old and thought I wanted to be a yearbook sponsor but I had always counted on having an intelligent, hard working, energetic, yearbook staff and especially a real brick for an editor, but then I met George . . . I took him in and taught him all the idiosyncrasies of the fine old craft of yearbook making . . . gave him the advantages of my years of experience in this exciting business . . . got him a new and exciting publisher with many new ideas and innovations . . . had one of the top photographic studios do our photography . . . got one of the most exciting and hard working staHs any editor could possibly expect to have . . . turned them all loose with a free, guiding hand and words of encouragement . . . and here . . . here was the rub . . . pictures missing . . . deadlines missed . . . prob- lems we have never dreamed of now appeared . . . it was fantastic . . but in spite of it all . . . I am much greyer . . . have to drink milk . . . but we do have a yearbook . . . and I believe a good, honest represen- tation of I967 at our school . . . we may have missed some groups here and there or a face here and there but if we did, it was unintentional and we tried very hard to include everyone and everything . . . thank you, stayf, and even you George . . . g.m.a.
