Perhaps the thing we will remember the longest about Mr. Hoke is his patience and understanding when it came to helping us. Dear Seniors, Your formal education is at or near its end. Those of you who will plunge immediately into the sea of life will hnd yourselves beset by all manner of responsi- bilities. Charles E. Wilson, in a recent issue of THINK magazine, is quoted on this subject as follows: Our great task is to protect and pass on to our descendants the cherished liberties which our fore- fathers protected and handed down to us. Each gen- eration has had its job to do, its battles to win, to keep the torch of liberty burning and to increase its brightness through the years. The task of this genera- tion of Americans, here and now, is to lay a secure foundation for peace and freedom in the world. With unity, with vigor and with unselfishness, that task will be accomplished. How well we have done our job in the schools will be measured, in the ultimate, by how well you do your tasks in life. May success and happiness in life be yours. Yours very sincerely, JOSEPH R. WILSON Supervising Principal Principal's Messages Dear Seniors, You, the members of' the class of 1953, have the exclusive honor of being the first in a long succession of classes to graduate from Kennard-Dale High School. Each class will produce many members who will make their impact upon the community as leaders in politics, farming, trades, business and the professions. I feel that Kennard-Dale High School is fortunate and honored this year in graduating such a fine class. For it is you that have set the high standards that suc- ceeding classes will strive to meet and better. You, individually and as a class, were strangers in a new school environment in September. Through com- plete harmony, hard work, and leadership, you have accomplished an amazing number of projects and you have done them well. You as a class are rich in pleas- ing personalities, in the dignities that are befitting of seniors, and in spirit. Take these qualities with you into your future and your success is assured, and we at Kermard-Dale High will be proud. Yours very sincerely, ELDON S. WEBB Assistant Administrator f Xi' Student Council Row 1-Brown, S. XXI-hb, Pl'iI1l'ffI.l1.' J. R. Wilsrun, Superziring Principal: S. Harvey. Row 2 If. Coleman. A. Scarborough. j. Huaps. P. Our representative and governing body, the Student Council, has one student member from each of the nineteen home rooms. The main purpose of the organization is the development of better citizens through experience with self government. The functions of the group include directing extracurricular affairs by approving events for the Calendar of Activities and creating an atmosphere of understanding in the school. By the powers vested in the Council and by sterling example, the Student Council is able to exert a fine inHuence on Kennard-Dale High School. 5 Jun, gmw. Joint School Committee Fran! Rau'-Daniel E. The South Eastern joint School District went into joint operation in july, 1951, with eight districts, four boroughs and four townships, forming the jointure. The combination of eight individual districts, each with a board of directors of five, made a total of forty school directors attempting to serve as one board. A more etlicient method of operation was chosen by the eight boards through the formation of the joint school committee, composed of two members appointed an- nually in December by each individual board. The joint school committee functions in the operation of school affairs exactly as an individual board, but with more limited powers than the individual board. The levying of taxes and the adoption of the budget must be done 'through individual board action. The committee acts only in carrying out school policies and operations within the scope of the budget adopted by the eight boards at a full board meeting. School Board CROSS ROADS-H. I. Mr. Lawrence Shover was not present when the picture was taken. The School Building Authority has had the very large task of overseeing the building of the two new structures that have been added to the physical plant of the South Eastern Joint School District. These new additions have been the Kennard- Dale High School and the six-room elementary school at Stewartstown. 4 Before their task is done, the Authority will have added an auditorium to the Kennard-Dale High School, eight rooms to the six at Stewartstown, and a ten-room structure at Delta for elementary purposes. 'K-.ve 9' N. Wta CLASS Two groups boarded buses of education, September, 1949, heading for separate schools, yet soon to be united as one class. Leading the Delta Class on their ride was Nancy McElwain, President, Ann Zimmer- man, Vice-President, Beverly Asbury, Secretary, and joan Reitz, Treasurer. They did a good job of steer- ing them through a trip to Conawingo Dam, hayrides and record hops. Raymond Bond, President, Blakely Eyster, Vice-President, Richard Fix, Secretary, Mildred Blevins, Treasurer, and Loretta Wolfe, Historian, were elected leaders of the Stewartstown Freshman Class. This group journeyed to Harrisburg as a class trip and enjoyed it very much. Other stops were at Stewarts- town High School for a Get-Acquainted Party with the rest of the high school, and a Christmas Party. Once again in SO , each group entered the sopho- more bus, closer to being united. A Hershey trip and dances were directed by Delta's officers-Gene Wagner, Presidentg Eleanor Hushon, Vice-President, David Allen,- Secretary, and Nancy McElwain, Treasurer. Blakely Eyster, President 5 Billy joe Allen, Vice-Presi- dent, Faye Almoney, Secretary, Sharon Cooper, Treas- urerg and Loretta Wolfe, Historian, were elected to lead the Stewartstown class through Philadelphia and Washington. Other stops were skating parties and dances. A rumor was running through the junior bus in 1951 that these two classes would be united and would be the first graduating class of a new consolidation, Kennard-Dale High School. .Ioan Reitz, President, Ed Garvine, Vice-President, Eleanor Hushon, Secretary, and Eugene Wagner, Treasurer, were the drivers through Delta's junior year. Patty Miller, President, Blakely Eyster, Vice-President, Sarah Kaufman, Secre- tary, Faye Almoney, Treasurer, and Betty Lou Taylor, Historian, conducted the bus for the Stewartstown junior Class. Each class, not knowing it, was now doing the same things-going on a trip to Gettysburg, sponsoring a Prom, getting those wonderful class rings -these joys were shared by both classes. Although Delta's class was unable to have a class play, the Stew- artstown class presented a play, Desperate Ambrose . Each class contributed much to the buses of sports, cheerleading and other extracurricular activities. Now came the big trip for both classes. The buses headed toward a new high school, Kennard-Dale. Many adjustments were to be made and jean Hint, President, David Allen, Vice-President, Sharon Cooper, Secretary, Nancy McElwain, Treasurer, Donald Green, Historian, conducted the trip as the senior officers. The class sold fruit cakes, vanilla, Christmas wreaths, and pen- cils to help the expenses of the New York trip. Stopping at the gymnasium, the class presented the play Willie's Weekend. After one big trip to New York City, the last stop was graduation. By this time each member of the class had realized the importance of Kennard-Dale High School. FIRST NATIONAL BANK STEWARTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA The Fawn is Kennard-Dale-'s first yearbook. The stafT, after many trials and tribulations in ways of planning, organizing, and trying to meet deadlines for materials at Baltimore, attempted to present in pictures as much as possible of the life, activities, and people connected with Kennard-Dale. We, the seniors of 1953, hereby thank all who supported us in many ways in making this yearbook project a success. May you give your cooperation and support to future yearbook projects as you have contributed to ours. Further, we ask your cooperation in supporting those who have placed Ads in our book. They deserve patronage from all of us. Our deep appreciation extends to the loyal support of our patrons. We wish to express our gratefulness to Mr. Oram Bell and Loring Studio for their generous service in the photography department. Again our sincere thanks- The Seniors of 1953 H. G.
