These are sombre times, troubled times, and yet the class of 1951 feels that a theme such as we have chosen is a much needed contrast to the prevailing tenor of the times. We wish, in future years, to be able to recall the pleasant memories which we obtained during our three years at Kenmore Senior High School. Thus we hope, through the medium of our gay, light-hearted theme, that we may bring a feeling of delight and nostalgia to each and every reader. 20 ek' 4- THE BIG TOP ALMA MATER I We sing to you, oh alma materg We spread your praises far and near. We're proud to be your sons and daughtersg Your honor we uphold as dear. For years you've always held before us Ideals that are both fine and trueg So now we pledge, oh Kenmore High School Our loyalty to you. II With joyful hearts we'll ever cherish Our memories of our high school daysg Your name forever more will stir us To shout aloud your well-earned praise. Your waving banner will inspire us To cheer your colors white and blue. So now we pledge, oh Kenmore High School Our loyalty to you. 0 0 0 A I M ADMINISTRATION E . I7-lndr-as BOAllD 0F EDUCATIO MR. IN THIS world of discontent, we, the Class of 1951, are facing a period of inde- cision. Our minds are uneasy, clamoring for the response to questions which cannot be answered. Accordingly, we turn to our teachers and school administrators who can give us a helping hand. Our depend- ence upon them in the past for the knowledge they have ingrained in our minds, leaves our hope for the future founded on that knowledge. Their guid- ance is one beam of light that has not failed us, and that guidance will continue to be a beacon in the crucial years ahead. Thus, we sincerely thank and express our lasting gratitude to the Board of Educa- tion, to the administration, and to the teachers of Kenmore Senior High School. 8 MR. R.AYMOND S. I .....4.A . fl AA' Oo gl ': F . uv QB, Oo PAT Once we were the untouchables-the low caste south-morons, lowest of creatures as viewed by the select upperclassmen. Gone was our sacred position of yesteryear. Our new lot in the Senior High School was comparable to the rank of protozoan in the animal kingdom. Characteristic of sophomores, we displayed the usual abominable traits such as dumbness, ignorance, and general obnoxiousness. Our lingo was even obsolete, for we were still associated with child- ish expressions such as freeze,' when there were priceless gems in circulation such as Kilroy was here and Drop dead. But somehow we survived . . . WVe managed to put on a Sophomore Show, which feat had not been attempted previously for quite a number of years. VVe also chose leaders to further our grievances in the Student Council. Our ringleaders were Allison Matthews, Joan Schroeder, Ron Tracey, and Chuck Mackett. We also chose a ringmaster-Mike, the Major , Stark. Some of us went out for sports, many others became interested in extra-curr . . ., well, outside-of-school activi- ties. We attended the football games and got a big kick out of new and diH'erent school affairs. Our prestige somewhat wavered after bucking the January exams. We settled down to work, passed, and looked enthusiastically forward to elevation in all respects of school life. We are the Juniors, or spokes No longer are we detestable children, but adults. Yes, even connoisseurs Cof studyhall diction- aries and cafeteria spoonsj. We began to vary our activities and, soon we had infiltrated all walks of school life. Ringleaders for this year were again Allison Matthews, Joan Schroeder, Ron Tracey, and a newcomer, Bob Martindale. We managed to summon a wealth of talent together as we put on the Junior Show-and it went over big Canyway it was a long show.J We collaborated with the sophomores to produce a semi-formal dance which was actually a combination of the Junior Prom and Sophomore Hop. Many of us participated in athletics with some making varsity squads. We accepted our social position with dignity and at the termination of the junior year looked ahead with enthusiasm to September, 1950. 22 PERFORlVlA CE We are sedate seniors. Awe-inspiring is our grandeur in the eyes of our fervent admirers. We are a paragon of beauty, poise, and sophistication-the essence of self-confidence and the quintessence of virtue-the knowledge of ages, the wisdom of Solomon-no longer do pedagogic words of wisdomn inspire us to dazzling heights. To us, no one has lived before us, and no one will live after us. We represent the Joe College and Betty Co-ed of tomorrow land maybe even the G.I. Joe.D To summarize us in a few simple words-we are the wheels But an end to laud and glorification . . . Looming up from behind the fighting spirit of Ernie Hamble- ton came Herman Markell, who was elected Student Council President on promises of keeping things at school the way Ernie had left them. Senior officers were Joan Schroeder, Bob hlartindale, Ralph Case, and Barb Simpson. CThis class is in a rutlj VVe took time out from trig and English to put on another in a great line of hlondo Productions, the Senior Carnival. Not only did we see Indians, watch the Charleston, and hear ultra-modern melodies, but also we became acquainted with effervescent per- sonalities such as Gullible Cand our lovely queen, too, Joan Schroeder.j Soon rave notices were published by our critical pedagogues and we discovered we had potential scholarsn in our midst-Ruth Rittenhouse and Dave Arnold, who came in Hrst and second respectively. For some of our big top players, college boards and scholarship exams threatened the futureg for others, business interviews loomed ahead. Still others left Nightmare Alleyn to join Uncle Sam's fraternityf' Then came class day with its consequent awarding of letters, honors, and scholarships. The Senior Ball came and went as only a glorious reminder of our still more glorious past. June exams were quickly hurled and graduation day arrived. Misty-eyed Qheck, bawlingb were we all as we realized the termina- tion of our presence in the grand old hallowed halls of K.H.S. The circus was breaking up and ending its season with a grand finale- but such was life, with its ups and downs. Few of us will forget our alma mater as it remains an example of our American way of life. It will help to serve as a source of inspiration as we tread along life's highway. We buy our tickets for the show from Herm Kubanek, the Silent Salesman, and Bob Murphy sells us a program which was printed by the Cogswell Copy Company Cbetter known as the C.C.C. from Blaine to Tennesseel. Let's have a quick glance at the midway and side shows since we have some time before the big show begins. As we walk by the many concessions, we hear the voice of the Circus Barker, Bob Bedworth: Come one, come all, don't miss the show, step right up, donit be shy. See the lovely dancing girls: Muriel Schalnberger, Nancy Kort, and Carol Bloch. . . . Look at that poster, MGM's latest production, The Man Women Dream About. It's Chuck Hill, starring in the Lady Killerf' Among the many side shows we see . . . The Siamese Twins, Dorothy and Alberta Rowe . . . The Torch Twirler, Margo VVilliams . . . Bo-Bo the Trombone Boy, Dave Arnold . . . The Midgets, Marie Jedderman and Dan Cal- lanan . . . The Strong Man, Roger Meadway. VVe'd better hurry or we'll be late for the show. Carol Noble, the head usherette, leads us to our seats, and the show is about to begin. The booming voice of Don McCulty breaks through the air Q41 M .X W K Nw . John Mondo, master of ceremonies, makes his appearance at the far end of the arena and announces that the show will be opened with the singing of our National Anthem by Joyce Jough- ton. She is accompanied by Jerry Walters who has revolutionized all circus bands into bop groups with only cool, gone musicians . The sound of the gun brings cheers from the crowd as the clowns, LaMarca and Champagne, dash into the ring, followed by the bareback riders, Janet Chase and Sue St. Louis. In the center ring we see Jerry Ames, the Lady Tamer, pardon, Lion Tamer, cracking his whip. In the outer rings Clyde Farnan, the fast talking magician, goes through his most difficult tricks, and Princess Olga, the snake charmer, CMarge Helfrich to her friendsj fascinates us with her weird snake dance. Looking around . . . Say, isn't that Mr. and Mrs. Tom Illig over there? CShe's the former Virginia Dawsey.D Oh! And there's Private Ken Grieser saluting General Peter Hornbarger. Gen- eral Hornbarger is now President of the West Point Military Academy. And over there is Gladys Glindeman, the well-known reporter of the Herald Tribune. We turn back to the show in time to see the breath-taking performance of the trapeze artist, Joan Land, who does a thrilling tap dance on the high wire as a quiet hush falls over the stadium. During the intermission, Martindale and Mackett sell cool, refreshing beverages to the audience, while Don Greek, the peanut vendor, sells peanuts, popcorn, and souvenirs. Now our attention is taken to the far end of the arena, where Ralph Case will dive from the fifty foot landing into a wet dish rag! The twenty clowns jumping out of Bob White's car keep the audience in stitches with their colorful costumes and crazy antics. They all manage to escape just before the car blows up. The last act is the most thrilling of all. Ronald Tracey is shot out of the cannon into the loving arms of his wife, who is watching the show on television. The Greatest Show on Earth has now come to a close. The performers and all those who have made this show possible sincerely hope you have enjoyed it. Lct's take a stroll along the fabulous midway and watch the Junior Performers rehearsing under the Big Top. In the main tent, we see such performers as Gail Lynch, Barb Easter, George Anderson, and Tom Blount working industriously so that they and their associates might gain better recognition in the show of '52, These Juniors' excellent participation in such school activities as sports, clubs, student council, class shows, dances, and plays is to be highly commended. Mr. Clark, their efficient manager, certainly deserves our medal of approval for his direction of such a Hne troupe. Although they are still amateur performers this year, we are sure that they will progress to bigger and better things as they take over the spotlight in 1952. 70 ff-' 4' -- 4 R . ,, , ,,., , M A., fi, 1 I 1 I I l js, ff 'I .K j 1- V Q ' - is , fu . . f .PN 3 M1 lu I . Our Student Council, made up of the leaders of Kenmore Senior High School, is an organization which tries to create a co-operative union between our student body and faculty. The purpose of this council is to teach the students the principles and procedures of a demo- cratic, self-governing body. The class officers and student council president, Herman ltlarkell, worked with Mr. Frazier and Mr. Freeman to create a harmonious and congenial school government. The experience which the Student Council gives its members will prove beneficial to each one in preparation for active citizenship. Our Friday night dances, as well as the annual Tinsel Ball, were planned by the Student Council. The music, decorations, refreshments, and wonderful time had by all, are proof of the fine job this group has done throughout the school year. Everyone will agree that our activi- ties have been outstanding and successful. f However, our Student Council has done a great deal more than UPA . 5 .1 ,S A plan entertainment for us. The Community Chest Drive, the Wy. X. 'fm I Junior Red Cross, and the March of Dimes were, as is the custom, V 0 f 5 H fag: sponsored by the Student Council. It alsowpromoted the support of iw!! A!! 'e,'f,'l our adopted Dutch war orphan, Mleke Groothlus. ' 953,12-,,Q 3- A ',1'f President Herman Markell has done a great deal to build up the 7 J! ' f '5 faxglfv 5' sportsmanship and spirit between schools during our athletic , l .H , 1- contests of the year. The rogram, which Herm resented over the P. A. system on Armistice? Day, did a great deal, more than bring Q 5 51.3. tears to our eyes and lumps to our throats. Without the financial aid given to us by the Student Council, C fi - C 4-'fl1f?'f ??7521 ' our dance proceeds, and its support, this book would never have p been published. We wish to congratulate our Student Council of 1950-51 on an excellent job, and we hope that the Student Council of next year will be able to live up to the splendid record established by this year's group. 87 I I Tlaiinoon When the K.H.S. stage door opened for tryouts for the All-School Play last fall, approximately 150 aspirants for the rolls appeared. No wonder the cast was so good after winning the roles in such competition! Sue St. Louis, Pat Kelly, Herm Markell, and Eleanor Peirce played their parts to the hilt, and Miss Strong had another success on her hands. AQUACADE The annual aquacade again thrilled hundreds of spectators at each of its four performances. Sally Miller and Robert Walker, the student managers, are to be commended on a fine job of production. The art department created a realistic South American atmosphere which complemented the performance of the swimmers. Miss Bollan and Mr. Bollier are credited with another success- ful water show which further established the Aquacade as a permanent event in Kenmore. 88 E l0R CAR l AL Once again our senior class came through admirably to score a large success on our stage. The talented seniors, under the student direction of Johnny ltfondo and the supervision of our advisor Mr. Stark and Miss V. Elson, presented the theme of music through the ages. Repre- sentative of the evening's entertainment were Joan Schroeder's 'Tm an Indian, too, and The Rhythm Five, both pictured above. The show set a new pattern for student programs and was an example of the eo-operation which exists be- tween hfr. Stark and the senior class. Tl EL BALL l Kenmore High observed Christmas time in the finest fashion at the annual Tinsel Ball. The excellent job done by the decorating committee made our ballroom warm and inviting for the dance. Ray YVatkin's ten piece orchestra added the finishing touch with a well chosen mixture of smooth dance music. Our st.udent council may be proud of a line job of planning because the stu- dents who attended the Tinsel Ball were well rewarded with a wonderful evening. 89 01 W . W xfifop M M Ziff Wffyw of W7 -. Our gay, light-hearted theme has been very amusing and interesting, and we sincerely hope that our publica- tion will be enjoyed. Our editors have done a terrific job, and each one has turned out a really wonderful section. None of us will ever forget the last minute rush for ads during Christmas vacation or the black looks that we received from our editors when we missed deadlines and said, Gee, I'm terribly sorry, but I had an English theme, and . . . maybe tomorrow . . . Of course, they weren't in the next day either, and probably not until the harassed editor ran to Nlr. Rott for help. However, in spite of-our trials and tribulations, we have com- pleted the writing, photographing, drawing, and editing, and the 1951 Kenitorial is here. NVe hope you will enjoy it, one and all. 95 C0 'CERT BA D Row One: C. Mangold, J. Rizzo, D. Schmitz, R. Stellrecht, J. Domster, VV. Alt R. Winn. Row Two: D. Campbell, F. Fourby, J. Popp, D. Cook, M. VAR ITY FO0TBALL A hard-fought 19 to 12 victory over Lackawanna in the final game of the season enabled our Varsity Blue Devils to finish for the third consecutive year in second place in the Niagara Frontier League. Their fine record of five victories and two defeats-equalled by that of the afore-mentioned Steelers -was surpassed only by North Tonwawanda's perfect mark of seven victories and no defeats. Starting the season by dropping a non-league decision to Jamestown by a 20 to 0 count, our boys came back with a vengeance in their next game and trounced the Trott Varsity eleven 30 to 14. The victory over Trott greatly increased the squad's confidence and sent it into the traditional N. T. game, which had been moved up from the seventh to the third posi- tion on the schedule, undefeated in league competition. Played in Civic Stadium, the game drew a large crowd and very few in that crowd were disappointed. They saw a big, rugged N. T. squad pushed to the limit by an underdog but confident and fighting band of Blue Devils. But in the end, North Tonawanda's big weight advantage was too much and they managed to push over three touchdowns and capture a 21 to 0 decision. Then, as Kenmore squads have a habit of doing, our team came back to whip Lockport and follow up that triumph by outscoring Tonawanda in the closing minutes to win 26 to 20. The next contest was an upset, and Kenmore was on the receiving end. Played in Niagara Falls, the game was close from the opening Whistle, and the lead see-sawed back and forth, but when the final gun sounded, the Falls had a six point lead winning 25 to 19. Following the upset at the Falls, Kenmore conquered LaSalle and Lackawanna to con- clude a successful season under Jules Yakapovich in his first year as head coach. When post-season honors were distributed, Kenmore got its share as six players earned selection to the N. F. L. All Star Team. Rudy Kristich was named to a half back post on the first teamg and Mike Morog, Lou Panezich, Ken Greiser, and Tom Whelan won positions on the second team. Ray Grace received honorable mention. Only three of the seventeen players returning from the '50 Varsity have had a reasonable amount of experience, and Coaches Yakapovich and Oelkers will be forced to rely heavily on players who performed for this year's Junior Varsity. Nevertheless, we are conlident that next year's team captained by Jerry Norgren will maintain the same high standard of play built up by Kenmore elevens in the past. Firsl Roux' C. Mosher, J. Utz, J. The final score was 15-7 and the loss ended a string of 13 straight games without defeat. There were few individual stars as all players contributed much, but some of the more outstanding boys were Best, Foster, Little, Kristich, Utz, MacCabe, Jacobs, Prey, and Barrett. Next year's J. Living up to most expectations, our Junior Blue Devils raced through their next eleven games-winning eight while losing only three and averaging over fifty points per game. But in their final two games their scoring fell off, and our cagers bowed to Tonawanda 4-9-43 and Lackawanna 55-42. These losses made their final record eight victories and six defeats. The 1950 edition was no different and again took many of the laurels while tying for first place with North Tonawanda's skilled Lumber- jacks. Each squad had a record of twelve wins and one loss. The Blue Devils ended the season by capturing singles and doubles championship titles in the Sec- tion VI state meet for the first time in history. Harry Conlan won the singles crown, and Bruce Heacock and Bill Staley combined to win the doubles title for the third successive time and thus set an all-time mark. The able coaching of Sher Miller and the out- standing jobs turned in by Don VVhite, Jim VVoods, and Bob Denton were chiefly responsible for the satisfactory record of five victories, four defeats, and one tie. Although playing in the usually low scoring first position, White managed to lead all other Kenmore linksmen in scoring. WIMMI G TEAM After opening the season with consecutive triumphs over Amherst, LaSalle, and Lockport, Coach Charlie Pohl's Varsity hlermen turned around and dropped meets to North Tonawan- da, Tonawanda, and Niagara Falls to finish the first round with a mark of three victories in six outings. A repeat performance was a distinct possibility as Kenmore started the second round by once again whipping Amherst, LaSalle, and Lockport. But this time, after losing to N.T. and Tonawanda, our swimmers brought proud and happy smiles to the faces of Kenmore fans by coming from be- hind in the last two events of their second en- counter with the Falls to win a close but decisive victory thus capturing fourth place in the N.F.L. with a record of seven victories and five defeats. The excellent performance turned in by Ralph Case in the diving, Captain Nils Nielsen in the 100 yard breaststroke, Bob Warner in the 100 free- style, Dennis Lange in the 220 freestyle, Frank Day in the 50 freestyle, and Day, Nielsen, and Ronnie Wink in the Medley Relay all served to make Coach Pohlls 24th year as Kenmore mentor another successful one. Special laurels go to the hfedley Relay Team which set a new league record of 1:29.0, and Frank Day who won the N.F.L. 50 freestyle title in the post-season finals. Ken Hennig, Carl ivilliams, Bob lVarner, Don Tuttle, Dennis Lange, and Everet Smethurst will form the nucleus for next year's team and, sup- plemented by outstanding Junior Blue Devils, should do much to make Coach Pohl's 25th year a memorable one. WIMMI G TEAM Kenmore High School's B Swimming Team has served notice to all area schools that next year's Varsity squad will be a definite title threat in the Niagara Frontier League. Under the direction and supervision of Coach Charlie Pohl, our Junior Blue Devils splashed their way into a second place tie in the N.F.L. with an excellant record of nine victories and only three defeats. Each early meet brought the neces- sary increase of poise and confidence that played such a major role in Kenmore's drive for second place. Don Tuttle, Pete VVarnock, Bill Riegle, Ron Stalker, and Pete Cuthbertson are boys who showed great ability this season and should have successful Varsity careers next year. We are confident that Coach Pohl's B swim- mers will emerge victorious in '51 and will gain the experience needed for the Big Time under the Big Top. BA EBALL Following losses to North Tonawanda and Lockport in the first two games on the schedule, Kenmore's Varsity nine came back to win five straight games and clinch a playoff berth in the N. F. L. for the fourth consecutive year. The Blue Devils journeyed to N. T. for the opening game of the '50 season and were beaten 18 to 2 by a Lumberjack squad that was in mid-season form. The demoralizing effect that this terrible defeat should have had on the team was never forthcoming, and although the boys were beaten by Lockport in their next outing, they showed a. will to win that was to aid them greatly in victories over LaSalle, Tonawanda, Niagara Falls, Lackawanna, and Trott. Kenmore played good baseball in the playoffs but Hnally bowed to Lockport's Lions two games to one. The starting lineup was composed of Jack Westcott, John Dug- gan, Bill Stoddart, Don Best, Bob Hark, Tom Whelan, Rudy Kristich, John MCF all, and Joe Carver. Coach Tom,Kenny has six lettermen returning from last year's squad, and these boys should provide an excellant nucleus for the '51 nine, captained by Tom Whelan. Before bowing to Amherst and Niagara Falls in its final meet, the squad had started fast and had racked upv five straight victories. From Kenmore's point of view, the high light of the season was its triumph here in the N.F.L. meet. Coming in the fourth contest of the year, the victory once again gave our Blue Devils possession of the Niagara Frontier League Championship! The only loss, coming in the Zone VI Class AA Championships, shattered a record of nine consecutive seasons without defeat. Kenmore's athletes set records in the half mile, the 180 yard hurdles, and the shot put. Captain George Bertsch raced the half in 2104.9 to clip one and two-tenths seconds off the old mark of Q:05.4 set by Coleman in 1940. Lynn Dawsey set the new record in the hurdles, while Roger Pfeiffer put the shot 45 feet to better the old record set by Roy Somogye in 1945. Somogye,s old mark was 43 feet, eleven and one-half inches. Next year's team captained by Roy Tighlman has all the earmarks of a winner and we'd like to wish Coach Bollier and his trackmen the best of luck.
