Oi Q1 A calm settles over the audience as the house lights dim. It's five minutes till curtain time and up goes the curtain. It was a big mistake to have Carlton Kauf- mann as curtain man. Poor start or not, the show must go on. Ah, here comes joan Kraus, she must be the wife. Yes, there is Paul Clark, her husband. For a sample of Beebe's genius and a good thick slice of life, let's listen in for a while. Husband: Well, what do you think? Wye: I don't know. fThinks for a minutej Husband: It's for you to say. Wye: I know. CAfter a long pausej There's jane. There is a fumbling and fussing in the audience. Bill Stoddard, well-known agri- cultural leader, in the third row, strikes a match to see who jane is. She isn't in the program. Who the devil is jane? lt seems that the play director, joan Stoddart, has so much on her mind that she forgot to tell the printer, Paul Luthringer, about jane, who incidentally prances in at this point, lollypop in mouth. The dis- guise is good, but we recognize you, Maureen Thiringer. On with the play. Husband: You mean the whatchamacallit? Wye: Yes. ftelephone ringsj That's probably Arthur. A notable clergyman, the Reverend Robert Clark, in the fifth row strikes a match to see who Arthur is. He's not in the program either. Husband: Monday. Much more likely to be Ann. Wye.' Not now. Husband: Well. Wye: Oh, all right. fexits for ten minutes while husband reads the paperj. Husband: fas she comes backj Ann? Wye: fln a voicej Give my love to the dear boy. Husband: No darling, not like chickens. QWife writes a letter, then picks up paper. Husband, who was out determining the source of a backstage disturbance which proved to be Carol Copley eating one of her famed lunches, returns.J Wye: Qfrom paperj Rose Plumb is engaged. Fancy! Husband: Yes, I meant to tell you. I saw jack Mullen at the club. Two gentlemen strike matches-correction-one has a lighter. Wye: Who is he? Husband: Bob Wright's best friend. fenter maidj Child in audience screams, That's my mommy. jerry Kosack quiets the child and Gloria Lindner begins her lines. Maid: There's a policeman downstairs, sir. He wants to see you. Husband: Oh! If that's Bob Feinen again. QHe goes out for five minutes while audience waits breathlessly. Now the drama is moving. . . . He returns., Wye: Car? Husband: Some fool turned the lights on. What were we talking about? Darn, I left my pipe downstairs. QI-le goes outj And if the audience goes out too, who shall blame them? At this point we have a lengthy intermission. Wishing to take full advantage of our time, we take a tour through the halls of our good old alma mater. We hate to miss the beautiful music of Ted Wertz and His Fanatical Five, but a chance like this comes so seldom that we must take it in full. Strolling through the hall, many old familiar sights meet our eye, but something new has been added to the dear old cafeteria which was so dear to our stomachs back in '49. Each table is equipped with its own milk shaker and individual dish- washer. Ah, such conveniences these scholars GJ have. Reaching the stairs we decide that we will visit the sceond Hoor where in '49 the walls rang with the screams of frantic teachers and flunking seniors. But wait, what's that odor descending upon us? Could it be, but no, but horrors it is, they haven't cleaned out locker 2285 since we left. Realizing we have overstayed the intermission, we hurry back to the auditorium only to find the play all over Qwe could have planned thislj. We are soon swept into the departing crowd admidst whom we see Conover models, Carolyn Martin, Pat Hornbarger, and Mary Westover. As we push our way out the door we are knocked out of the way by a flash of red which later proves to be Pat Molloy with her husband, the eminent Dr. J. Kent. Well, as Ethel Barrymore says, It's all over, there isn't any more. . 5 :fab . , if . , 'first ng.. '. 4 lv ' ill' S ' ', .ist J Iv' . . ,. ,.
