To friend and foe alike this name, com- pounded of the school colors and an indomitable spirit to win, has become a byword. In presenting the 1948 edition of the Kenitorial, we have endeavored to weave into the life of the school this new symbol of recognition, which has come to be identihed with its achievementsg in word and picture we leave this book as a memorial to the Class of 1948. The realization that Kenmore Senior High is one of the most progressive schools in western New York should make us more cognizant of the fact that this is the result of the splendid work and co-operative spirit of our Board of Education. This group of unsellish and capable men and women has given much valuable time to the care- ful planning of school policies. It is they, who look out for our general welfare, who provide us with proper medical care, and afford us the finest facilities for education. However, the work does not terminate here. The Board is also planning for much needed new facilities for extra schools for out district. We as students at Kenmore High fully appreciate the work of our Board and sin- cerely hope that this tribute in our yearbook will be a measure of the gratitude we feel for the vital interest they manifest in making our school one of the finest in New York State. They are the unwitting embodiment of a paradox, how to remain self-assured in a world where they shall again be neophytes. For three long years they have struggled and aspired for one of those blue or white robes and that magic key to success--the diploma. We wish them vvellfbut gosh, we'll miss them! JANE DONNER 15 -6-- CLASS ,A .ZW J .5 2 Papers, lady?lGot any old books or magazines for the paper drive? Why, come to think of it, sonny, I must have lots of old papers if you want to come up into the attic with me and sort them out, Here now, help me up these stairs. I don't get around quite as well as I used to! That's it, now hand me my cane and we'll see what we can find. Ah yes-here they are over in the corner. My, oh my, just look at that dust! I guess it's a good thing you came along today, sonny, no one's been up here for years. I 'spect I'd better brush them off for you a mite before you take them, though. Don't want you getting your clothes all dirty! My stars but those old books bring back memories. 'Tom Sawyer,' 'Robinson Crusoe,' 'The Bobbsey Twins,' 'Forever Am . . .' 'Ah yes! Well, sakes alive, here's a book I'd completely forgotten I hadf'The Memoirs of the Class of 1948.' Say, now, there's a book that's really worth reading, sonny. Those were the daysewhen you could buy a pound of butter for ninety-three cents, and eggs were only sixty-five cents a dozen. But I guess that's a thing of the past, Why, Ican still remember that night, june 25, 1945. That was rhe night we graduated from Junior High, sonny, all 427 of us. We were a good looking lot, we wereethe girls all dressed in their retty formals and the boysfwhy, we hardly recognized the boys. You see in those days, sonny, the boys didn't wear suits to school. They all had some kind of blue trousers with lots of pockets. I think they called them dungarees! Oh, I remember how scared we were up there on the platform, and how when it was all over, and the door of our junior High days had closed behind the last one of us, we all felt just a little sad that we had to leave. But no one felt sad very long, because within a few days everyone was launched into a well- earned vacation, and all thoughts of school were dismissed until the following September, when we all trudged happily back to school. l'll never forget that first day at the Senior High, sonny. I-low utterly lost we felt in an immense school where everyone was going somewhere and no one knew exactly where ! The green blackboards and the P. A. fascinated us no end, and after about a week we finally got used to getting up fifteen minutes earlier, to be at school at 8:30 instead of the usual 8:45. To start the year off right, we elected jack O'Neil president of our class, Shirley Larson vice- president, Peggy Cole secretary, and Bud Knisley-well, to be perfectly frank, sonny, we really didn't even need a treasurer at all that year, because fate wasn't too kind to us, and I can remember at the end of the year we couldn't afford to buy even a red pencil to enter our debts in the book. But we didn't discourage easily, and on May tenth we presented our So homore Show, the very first display of our acting ability, which was shown to great advantage ecause of the fact that we had made the setting an insane asylum. Exactly one week later, this great event was followed by our Sophomore Hop, the climax of the y ' ' A of exams and another vacation had begun. After two glorious months in the summer sun, bronzed and happy we made our way back once again to the familiar portals of our alma mater. We were Juniors now, or in simpler words 'wheels, which entitled us to strut about the halls with that certain air of importance and with our noses held just a wee bit higher. Within a short time we had elected Ann Masterson president of our class, ear, and then before we knew it we were in the midst lllllll ll' ll 0, Q., -f 2 fr N ll l J O 16 ,L HISTCRY -lack O'Neil vice-president, Lou Paar secretary, and Shirley Larson treasurer, and were well on the way to another happy fun packed year. In November, all being loyal football fans, we trooped down to the civic stadium to watch our invincible Blue Devils in that thrilling game against North Tona- wanda. I remember that particularly because we were dismissed one hour early from school in order that we might have a pe rally out on the athletic field. Sonny, you never saw such a game in all your life, those Kenmore Eoys could certainly play football! Our band performed well, too, although we were sorry we had not been able to supply them with better uniforms. We won the game 13'7, and it was an excited crowd that flocked out to l3rinson's to celebrate our victory. Next on our agenda came our ever popular Christmas Dance, which, despite all the noise and confusion, managed to put everyone in t at happy holiday mood. You would have liked that, sonny. There was a Christmas tree with lights, and we even had a Santa Claus who passed out candy kisses. Well, to say he passed them out is putting it rather mildly, because I remember very distinctly almost getting knocked out when Santa threw a handful of candy kisses right into my face. After Christmas we all settled down to normal living, and in February we planned a stupendous junior Show. In fact it was so good that the faculty politely suggested that we have a Valentine Dance instead. With the money from this and from ourjunior Prom on June 6, at which Don Case and Ann Masterson were chosen King and Queen, our treasurv at last began to grow, and we were able to throw away our red pencil for good. In no time we found ourselves confronted by examinations and then off to vacation land again. Some of us tried our hands at working, while others soaked up the summer sun until it was time to return to our beloved alma mater for the last time. We all determined to make this year really count and started by electing Lou Paar president, Ann Masterson vice-president, Bill Doerr secretary, and Shirley Larson treasurer. Agan we flocked down to the civic stadium to urge our team on in their biggest football game of the year-North Tonawanda. But this year it was a sad crowd of enthusiasts who filed mournfully home after being beaten 12-0. However, we were consoled by the appearance of our new band, complete with bright blue uniforms and majorettes. Following in close succession was our Senior Carnival, which turned out to be a great success, and for which lovely Phyllis Vance was chosen queen, and our Aquacade, which, with a cast of seven- ty, was the best yet. During the winter months, lots of us took to skiing, and I wish you could have seen us, sonny, coming to school all black and blue and covered with bandages. March brought our senior play, 'Home Sweet Homicide,' and the year was finally topped off by our beautiful Senior Ball. At last we were amid final examinations, the last we took in Kenmore High School. And finally that great day of graduation was upon us. I recall very clearly how we felt that day, when we awoke to realize for the first time that we were no longer children, but mature men and women ready to take our places in the world. Well, sonny, I guess that about winds up my story, and look here, I've talked all the afternoon and you don't have your papers collected yet! You just take these books and hustle along. OLD - TOM DOLSON DORIS' PETERSON -MARILYN GROVE This is the year 1958! 1958, where life has been rejuvenated by atoms, rockets, and coke in every drinking fountain. 1958, where we, weary travelers from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Suffering Seniors, have emerged from darkest Africa, after spending years away from the outside world in search of the origin of Civilization In the midst of our venture, a certain nostalgic feeling gnaws at our heart strings and we know we must return to our old habitat at K. H. S. and those familiar landmarks we learned to love so well back in '48. We board our rocket ship and set off west- ward, bound for that metropolis of Kenmore. As we step from the Kenmore Central Airport, we see a beautiful blue and white cab of the Sheri- dan Cab Company, owned and operated by Gordie Reed. We hop in and journey down Delaware Avenue, where we notice many familiar sights, including a new and improved Alcobar, run by Diamond Jim Hicks, and a coke establishment recently opened by Nan Nelson and Eleanor Fronczak, charter members of the Kenmore chapter of Pepsi- Cola Anonymous. Lounging in the booths we see Lou Paar and Andy Podlucky, the place's steadiest customers. Sweeney's has been replaced by a haber- dashery run by Dean Bensley. We hear he is an expert at fitting pants. But wondering how Kenmore is being run now, we go over to the city hall, where we are ushered into the office of Mayor Sylvester Nye, who intro- duces us to his secretary, Doris Cunningham. While waiting for Mayor Nye to finish some important business, we happen to pick up a news- paper and see in the headlines David Stein has added another degree to his long chain, already mounting into the hundreds. This time it is B.L.S. CBachelor of Long Standingl. On the society page we see June Wiegand has finally accepted Paul Devitt's proposal of marriage. It's been a long, long time. Down in the corner is CLASS PROPHECY an advertisement for Don Pritchard's hermitage for happy bachelors. On the sports page we see that the Kenmore Blue Devil's baseball team has just announced the sign- ing of Specs Van Deusen, for the stupendous sum of 575,000 per season. His bobbing and weaving style in catching fly balls should be a great gate attraction. On the comic page the current hero appears to be Fearless Forkin, drawn by Ted Yochum. Everyone is aroused at the coming of Jack Wil- liams and his 100-piece orchestra, the largest dance band in the land. Featured in this massive aggrega- tion are Merrill Hall on drums, and Bill Watson, who recently won the Downbeat poll for the 5th consecutive year. Williams is to appear at the Ken- more Music Hall in a gala show also featuring songstress Barbara Dean, comedian Bones Evans, and those foremost exponents of modern dance, Shirley Larson and Larry Mucha. Along with this extravaganza is to be the huge water production of impressario Jack Miller, star- ring Pat Roberts, Nancy Ludeck, and the spring- board specialist Ray Arnold. We learn from Bill Callanan, who is to be emcee, that three local girls have gone a long way in the musical field-these three are Pat Earl and Peggy Gensler, now featured in the new show at the famed Diamond Horseshoe, Up in the Clouds, and jane Murch, who accompanies them on the piano. These three have banded together with two other Kenmore girls, models Nancy Stilwell and Hazel Tarbell, into a Kenmore Alumni Society in the Big City. Another local girl has reached the top of the legitimate stage. Frances Graley is now starring in the hit Life with Roogie, written by Beverly Martin. A very prominent candidate in the presidential race is Arthur Otten. The point that appeals to his following is that he will read the Sunday comics to all his loyal subjects if he is elected. Well, it worked for the Little Flower, so why not for the Big Bud! Well can we remember those school days when he was struggling with trig and physics as we read how Barry Milliard has hit upon a new scheme of rocketing cars to the moon. Too bad they haven't found a means of enabling people to reach there also. The current hangout for Kenmore grads appears to be an elite establishment known affectionately as Mothers, where the finest ginger ale in town is served. There we find Bud Knisley, Bill Bickerton, and Bill Myers. Jim Musty has initiated a unique business. He has purchased an old mansion and redecorated it specifically for rental as a summer theatre-it must be the old playwright in him. His cohorts in this enterprise are Howie Kirkwood and Jim Nist. As treasurer of the Hi-Y Alumni Association,Tom Polson is still trying to collect unpaid dues from jack O'Neill, who is now cruising in his yacht, The Hacienda, off Long Beach. But no visit would be complete without return- ing to our old alma mater. So we return to the school, where we are greeted by Principal Bill Sanders. Mr. Sanders takes us on a tour of the school, where we seeimany familiar faces, includ- ing john Youra, now the custodian in charge of Tobacco Road, and Librarian Edith Chesley. Down in 241, we see Mr. Mooshie, now completely bald, mulling sadly over the problems of the 1958 Kenitorial. The coach of the basketball team, Roughem Toughem Ken Varshay, informs us that Bullet Billy Doerr has just signed to play pro football for the San Francisco Starlets, sponsored by Dottie Dennis and Ann Masterson. What a fate! Coach Varshay tells us also that John Yacos was at school last year on his way back from his Olympic swim- ming triumphs in every free style race from the one yard to the marathon ten miles. This grind ap- peared to have little effect on Mr. Yacos, although protrusions similar to fins and webbing between his toes were apparent. Recently presented with their doctorates after doing post graduate work at K. H. S. were Connie Callanan, Lois Hayes, and Ruth Penfold, who com- bined to write their thesis on Homework, a Fate Worse Than Death. And still running around in search of identifica- tion sheets for Who's Who is janet Beardslee, its editor-in-chief. On our way back to the airport, we stop in at the offices of the Kenmore Press, which now has the widest circulation of any paper in the nation Cexcept The Daily Workerl. Editor Gretchen Dorries introduces us to her new associate editors, Janet Bogart and Phyllis Vance. Photographer Dick Sherer had just returned from taking pictures of the reopening of the Ten Pin Cub. While we are in the offices, several flashes of interest come in over the wire. Don Coon has just been selected to play the lead in the latest Tarzan picture. Dick Phinney has just won the American Bowling Con- gress Championship held in the City of North Tonawanda. Of special note to art lovers is the fact that E. Frank Moelich's masterpiece of Wood carving, the Passionate Pixie, has been awarded first prize in the contest conducted by the Rube Goldberg Foundation in Rockefeller Center. I Bob Stalker, Tonawandafs swimming coach, drops in to renew old acquaintances. He informs us that Bud Jones and Bill Harris have gone into the sporting goods business, Harris handling the needs of the skiers and Jones the girls Cneedsj. But time is growing short and our legs are grow- ing weary. We must bid farewell and return to our ship and back to Africa. Having seen the sordid atmosphere of our erstwhile comrades, their various and sundry life pursuits, we are not reluctant to return to Civilization again. Ah Wilderness! Although failing to win the NFL championship for the first time since 1942, our Blue Devils, ably coached by Bud Pitkin and-Iules Yakapovich, managed to lead the league in scoring and with a little luck would not have had to be contented with second place in the standings. The club started off like a ball of fire with a 14-O win over Lockport. The following week Trott was trounced, 32-O. Things looked bad until Bill Doerr started the ball rolling as we licked a stubborn LaSalle eleven, 18-O. But then came the stone wall in the form of the N. T. Lumberjacks, who avenged their 1946 defeat by edging us out, 12-O, at Civic Stadium. From here on in we couldn't be stopped. Our Blue Devils romped over Jamestown, 37-6, Tonawanda, 25-O, Niagara Falls, 39-O, and finished out the season against Lackawanna with a crushing 25-0 victory. Our success cannot be attributed to any one man. The first string of Podlucky, Neff, Wilson, Morog, Peehler, Fazekas, and Creighton, backed by Bill Bickerton, Bill Doerr, Captain Louie Paar, and John Svilokos, ably supported by Kirkwood, Elliott, Moelich, Fleish- man, Burns, and the rest performed admirably under Pit's guidance. The squad was beset by hard knocks all season, beginning with Red Peehler's sprained anlgles, through five broken noses, to Paar, Wilson, Elliott, Morog, and Moelich, and ending with Joe Morog's broken collarbone, suffered againstTonawanda. But nothing could stop Joe. He went from his center post to become almost as good a manager-especially at cleaning muddy cleats. FOOTBALL MR. YAKAvovlL'H, MR. At the beginning of the current cage season the outlook for our Blue Devils was not too bright. Don Bartrip was inelligible and Coach Bollier could count on only four lettermenfDon Burns, Jack Wilson, Sam Robinson, and Captain Louie Paar. The loss to Tonawanda in the opener did not help matters. The team picked up as they beat Lockport and Trott, but they bogged down and lost to a stubborn N. T. five. LaSalle was taken, but the Falls and Lackawanna edged us out as the first round ended. Burns came down with pneumonia and was out for the season and Robinson was home in bed as we lost again to Tonawanda. But Bartrip's inelligibility was up and Bob Utz returned from the Marines to spark us to five straight victories. Our loss to Lackawanna in the last game left us in a tie with Trott for fourth place. A playoff was held at N. T. and sparked by Utz's 18 points, we licked Trott in overtime 46-39. For the third time in three years we were in the play- offsfbut nobody was going to beat the Tonawanda five that night, so we ended up the season with an overall record of nine wins and seven defeats. On the returning squad were only six lettermen-Captain John Yacos, Jim Spencer, Gar Tomlin, Don Coon, Don Case, and Paul Gable. This number was lowered to three when Spencer was taken sick, Gable moved and Tomlin left for U. B. at mid-season. But despite these hardships, our boys came through gallantly. Yacos, Coon, and Case were aided ably by Fred Corey, Jim Childress and Alan Vogt, each of whom could be counted on for points. Also vastly improved over last year was Jim Hicks, who surprised everyone by swimming so well that he managed to gain a position in the finals. Through the season, our aquatic Blue Devils suffered losses only to Niagara Falls and North Tonawanda. In the finals we were edged out by N. KENNEY Coarb 108 OEIT TRACK Few persons realized when Chester Bollier came to Ken- more as track coach in 1940 what an outstanding man they were getting. In the eight years since then, he has lost neither a championship nor a single meet. This is undoubt- edly one of the finest high school records in the country. The year 1947 saw another star-studded Kenmore aggre- gation rack up their eighth successive undefeated season. Under the inspiring leadership of Captain John Svilokos, who led the team in scoring and also established a new school record in the pole vault, the blue-clad trackmen rolled over all oppositon, finally winning the Zone Six crown, emblematic of track supremacy in Western New MR- BU'-1-Wkicmflf York. This year's zone meet was one of the most exciting of all. The outcome was in doubt until the last relay race was won by our cinder Blue Devils. When the result was announced, a mighty shout was heard from the Kenmore adherents-we had won by the narrow margin of 32M to Olean's 28. BILL Donna, Captain There were several other outstanding men on this team who helped to make the season a successful one. John Hill won every mile race except the final at Olean, while Steve Swagel did the same in the hurdles. Standout sprinters were Dick Coates, George Miller, Bill Doerr and Lew Newhard. In the middle distance race we were represented by Sam Robinson, Joe Yacos, and Paul Burdick. Also im- portant cogs in the Kenmore machine were George Rovison, Dave Bouman, Eddie Fleischmann, and Bernie Graham. Every one of these contributed to make this a successful season in all respects.
