As our high school days reach their peak with the excitement and pride of graduation, We like to recall the incidents that have made the past three years some of the most important of our lives. We shall never forget the Wave of excite- ment that enveloped us more than once during that last thirty seconds of a close football or basketball game, the pride We have in our teams, the last minute dash down the hall at 8:29 A. M., the chemistry experiments that actually Worked the Way the book said they Would, the sly glances from the girl in the next seat when dates for the Junior Prom were highly desirable, the school plays that brought Broadway to Kenmore, the last minute cramming for exams, the patience and understanding of our teachers, and the countless other things that are so much a part of high school. The unforgettable lines of the Alma Mater, which portray our school so much better than we could expect to, have become the theme of the yearbook, in the hope that they will help you recall the days at K. S. H. S. that have sped by far too quickly. 4 'l r iw Q WI E L ' '17fV'3 4F !V 'ZW?1'1'ff7 :MWWV,'mwWH'?,DY'2Wfmq5 iWAAvrlw W 'K ww ' -v 'wWw 'wff vw Q 1 ' 'N J1a5.W:M5IgiI5 we we fraud W Lfrexenf C9ur fczcufy ' Q . . Received your notice about the Class of '47 reunion. Sorry I can't attend. My secretary, Shirley O'Shea, has informed me that all my time for that week is taken up as follows: Monday: A United Planets meeting with Senator Richard Simpson of New York and the U. S. Ambassador to Russia, John Svilokos. , Tuesday: Horseback riding with Mayor Gil Vetter of Chicago, at Dex Hinton's Riding Academy, followed by my semi-weekly workout at Hippo's Health Home , and an appointment with the first female Secretary of State, Miss Audrey fdo-or-diej Stewart. Wednesday: Engagement with political boss of Kenmore, Frank Flaherty: date to go to the race track with my bar- ber, Joe Greco, also, Leo Seibold and Joe Bet a Million Begovich. I must spend the evening at the opera Carmen starring Martha Steward. Thursday: A round of golf with Professor Donald Bush- man of Harvard and Industrialist Charles Blakesleeg a lecture on Ed Smith's new best-seller, The Evils of Women and Denatured Alcohol at the home of Miss Marilyn Butler, prominent social leader. Friday: Business appointments with Dave Schurr, ad- vertising agent for Currie's School of Refined Arts, Jacque- line Samson and Betty Shick, owners of the Samson and Shick Sheet Company, and Don Geary, President of Geary's Greaseless Garlic Company. Saturday: Assemble my weekly column, The News for Youse, for the Kenmore Independent Press, edited by Bob Shepherd: should attend the National Pool Champion- ships with comedian Fred Willimas. Playing for the crown 1::iehDon fEight-Ballb Bartrip and Tom CSure-Shotj Mc- a on. Sunday: Attend church and hear The Reverend Jack Knowl's sermon on The Good of Giving, and spend the rest of the day with Chuck Gregoire, Ron Goff, and John Gehl at the Odd Fellows' Picnic. I'm really sorry not to be able to come, as it would be great fun, but as you can see, it would be impossible. The Classy Columnist, DONALD Ross Gentlemen: It will be a pleasure to attend the Alumni Meeting in Kenmore. In view of the fact that the Dean and Day Studios will photograph the famous celebritieis coming back to the home town including the Met soprano, Ruth Chupasg Ambassador to Germany, George Eversoleg United Nations President, John Cornell: and many others. I am sure that our city will receive world-wide acclaim. Was it not a great announcement last month when Presi- dent Harry S. fBoardj appointed Shedrick Moore to his cabinet as Secretary of Applied Sciences? Let us hope we can all be in Kenmore even if we must come from the Spanish Embassy, as does Carmen Besosa, or from the Edinboro Consulate, as does Janet MacKinnon. Very truly yours, CMissj JEAN MOTZ To whom it may concern: Kindly make reservations for the Class of '47 reunion for the following alumni now living in the Wilbee-Burdick Projects: Mr. Robert Wilbee, Mayor of the world's most exclusive unheated and unlighted project: Mr. William Bing, local Fire Chief Che has many Flames Dg Mr. Bill Plumb, head of the Local Piping and Draining Co., Head Postmaster Charlie Kramer and his wife fthe former Phyllis Ens- mingerjg Messrs. ,lim and Tony Means, universally famous Pop Gun manufacturers, Honorable john Caruso, A.G.D. CAsh and Garbage Disposallg Mr. Robert Tait, retired Tennis Champion of Podunkg and Mr. Dick Stone, Super- intendent of Roads, Streets, and Lanes. Please send tickets in care of Mayor Wilbee's personal secretary, Miss Nancy Crimi, at the following address: 111 Wes Hoddick Avenue Lil' Dale, New York Thank you. CMissj PEGGY CoLE Eat Maloney's Baloney-The Meat for the Elite PERRY, PEARD, AND SCHNECKENBURGER CLocal Distributorsj ELMER REILLER, Manager Greetings: I borrowed this piece of stationery from Bill Shick in order to be able to answer your invitation. CShick conven- iently found it in Bill Siverson's Meat Market.D Bob Somogye and I recently bought a glue factory for Miss Lois Hughes. You have no doubt heard her slogan, Use Hughes Glues. Don't tell anybody but we got stuck with the works. If the Chevy I bought from the Dent and Reed Auto Co. can make the trip, I'll be there. Best Wishes, ALLEN SMITH Dear Classmate: While attending the New York Philharmonic Orchestra concert last Sunday, I saw Conductor Richard Hamilton wave the baton at numerous Kenmorites including Philip Hessinger, clarinetist, and Barabara Hansen, guest pianist. I hope you also heard the talk by Verner Gibson, Vice- President of General Motors. His revelation of the recent scientific achievements of the Arthur and Goundry Insti- tutue shows that Kenmore has leaders in every field. Often have I wondered if any of our classmates would ever be- come anything in this world. I presume the Mr. Stange of Kenmore High's German Department and Miss Swannie of its Art Department hold the same idea about this year's graduating class. Please remember me for a reservation. With a warm greeting, CMissD NORMA MCAFEE Dear Malcolm: I met Phyl Briggs yesterday in Marion Boston's Dress Shoppe. She told me that she saw Teen Age Stylist Phyliss Duquette at the world's premier of Nicotine Street, Cplaywright Fred Rowland's version of Tobacco Road. The stars of the play were those two famous Academy Award Winners, Marion Owen and Dick Cheliusj Phyl also mentioned that the Varga Model, Dottie Love, had received an invitation to the Class of '47 reunion. Since I wasn't sure of this gossip, I stopped in Barbara Bodenbender's Beauty Salon and talked to Eileen Johnson, the head beautician, about the rumor. Miss johnson told me that Marge Van Allen, Society Writer for The New York Times, had stopped in to tell her there was to be a reunion. On my way home, I met Midge Harding in front of Sal Kitson's Hat Shoppe on Fifth Avenue. Midge said that she just left Dick Blanc's night club, The Gilded Goose, where she has the honor of being keeper of the paltry dollars. I told her about the reunion and she said she would inform bartender Frank Wilkins of the big event. Upon turning down my street, I came in contact with Ginny Wells. Miss Wells, a star forward for the Boston Beauties, is in town for the National Womens' A. A. U. Championship Basketball Tournament to be held in Madison Square Garden. I would like reservations for Miss Wells, my husband, and me. Thank you, Mas. T. NICHKJLSON Clnkyj My dear friend: To be able to come back to a city not infiltrated by strikers will be a great thing. In Millerstone, the city workers, including the staff of Library Administrator Thomas Crage and the teachers of Plache Memorial School, have not shown up for their jobs for more than a week now. The injunction which Mayor Blum sought from Governor Walton was declared illegal by the courts, and CIO President Garland Tomlin sits back in his chair wait- ing for an increased budget in the city council. Again, I am happy to come to Kenmore to observe the peace and order preserved by your Police Chief Jim Alexander. With kind regards, CMissJ JEAN TUTTTON Hello, you wonderful people! I received your invitation to the Class of '47 reunion at the party given at the home of my eighth boy friend Uim Kellyl. That was in Chicago. I have picked up two new acquaintances since then. My ninth victim, Mike Donnelly Cof the Donnelly-Seelbach Doo-Dad Co.l would like reser' vations for ten. I will not be able to attend this fine affair in as much as my tenth beau fDr. Robert Drasgowj and I are parting. At the present time, I am friendly with Ronald Fazekas, President of the Fuzzy Tire Co. I'm so sorry I cannot join the fun. Love, ANONYMOUS P.S. CU Would you please contact my former associates as they may also wish to attend? l. Mr. Robert Grimmer-Long Beach, Ontario. COwner of sand pit No. 692. 2. I've forgotten who he was. Couldn't have been very important. 3. Mr. Ronald McMahon--Radar City, New York. Cjack Benny's vocalist.j -I. Mr. John Hill-Paducah, Kentucky CTobacco auction- eerl. 5. Mr. Cliff Hansen-The Moon Clnterplanetary Com- missionj. 6. Mr. Bill MacDonald-Manangua, Nicaragua CBanana salesmanj. 7. Dr. Anthony CI.iottil-Miami, Florida CLove analystj. P.S. f2J My new address is on the envelope-Hollywood, of course! Gentlemen: Inasmuch as I am living in Alaska, you probably think that I have not seen any of my old friends for some time. Oddly enough, I am not the only one way up here from our Class of '47. In Juneau, I saluted my old classmate Vernon Abel, the governor of the state. He, in turn, led me to other notables-namely Trudy Kraus, Red Cross field director, Vice-President Alan Loesser of the Harring- ton Gold Mines, Inc.g and the presidents of the two textile industries-Jane Wark and Pat Hammond. If you have not heard about the potentialities of Alaska lately, you might read Jean Plumb's book, The Romance of Alaska. It describes the work of Dave Muir and John Mowatt in the field of political, economic and social betterment for the territory. Their achievements are now being studied by Russian experts for use in the Siberian communities. Be sure to count on me for a reservation. Sincerely, CMissJ BETTY MAY Kkfwss Ilorticulturift Reservation Committee: Please make reservations for the Class of '47 reunion for the following ten sports celebritieis: Larry Bagne, world's champion bowler, Robert Connor, yo-yo coach at D'Youville A. 8: M., Norbert Creighton, Toronto Maple Leaf hockey star, Bernard Graham, World Heavyweight Wrestling Champ, Harold Killer Fenno, Boxing Champ of the National Paperweight Division, Dick Irvine, N. T. H. S. Badminton Coach, and Joe Morog, Chairman of the Finger Bowl Game. Mr. Morog informed us that Coach Merle Schmidt of Princeton Uni- versity CGood old P. U.D has agreed to bring his football team, starring Stamping Stinky Stollsteimer, to the Finger Bowl to meet Major Miner Wildey's great East Point team, starring Terrible Ted McConnon. Also make reservations for Jack Harbrecht, player-coach of Saylor's Satellites, National Pro Basketball Champions, John Theobald, Philadelphia's No-Hit pitcher: and Don Peck, world's fastest freestyle swimmer. Please send eleven tickets, becuase I plan on attending the reunion myself. Thank you, U. S. Director of Athletics Dwloi-rr BRAIN.-XRD, A.F. That great fellow Donald Ross, VVho is noted for his humor, Says he'll leave his famous column, But it may be just a rumor. Sue Reissig leaves an earring To anyone today Who has a wagon large enough To carry it away. Norma McAfee and Garland Tomlin Have said that they would rent To any yank that's going South A genuine Southern accent. Dime Dime McClatchey leaves the memories Of the baskets he has scored, And Paul Massing leaves a fire hydrant Wrapped in the bumper of his Ford. Wally Brinson was thinking of our hot dogs Because without mustard, they don't go far So he notified the cafeteria That he was leaving us a jar. Jean Lillico leaves closets full of clothes When she collects them all, And a great amount of talent ls left by Lois Ann Hall. Jean Kreienberg leaves to Ruthy Penfold One never ending conversation While Ridy Coates and Eddie Fleishmann Leave their matchless combination. Betty May Krauss leaves a size seven dress To any girl that it fits, Leo Seibold leaves dark glasses to the eyes That have suffered from his flashy outfits. Ginny Wells and Rita Gruntz So you can achieve their fame, Will leave behind a basket To help you win your game. The men behind the beards Are out the window gazers We find that Burns and Wilson Have left two unused razors. Some have trouble with their men, Butch King will leave hers some time, And Molly Dillon will help you rope a man By leaving a bit of her line. Markarian, Butler, and Eddie Smith, Who are known as the Jolly Boys Leave a collection of corney jokes And quite a bit of noise. That bobby pin twirler, Shirley Young, Leaves a lock of her famous hair, While that ambitious gal, Jean Tutton, Leaves a speck of her sophisticated air. A well-beaten drumstick is left by Jerry Reetz Who at beating the drums is a whiz, And Shirley O'Shea leaves a touch of her Irish For Herman Seifried's daughter-Katy, that is Those Hoods, Marge and Malcolm Leave their twin marks that can't be beat, While Valentine Alexander leaves his Unrehearsed kiss from Quality Street. The fall of '45 saw the newcomers off to a spectacular start by breaking all records for causing a reign of confusion in K. H. S. This bewilderment was rectified, however, by the wise election of Jack O'Neill, Shirley Larson, Bud Knisley, and Peg Cole as oHicers. The labors of Jack Miller and Mr. Lindberg insured the success of the Sophomore Show in May. The casting was made easy by an insane asylum setting. Later in May, the traditional Soph Hop was held in Kenmore's ballroom. This year the class learned the impressive part that fate can play in puncturing a class treasury. .J 3 , 1 v The fall of '46 finds the class again electing .lack O'Neill and 55 7- Shirley Larson as oHicers. The names of Ann Masterson and Louis K Y Paar are also on the new slate. In February, the Junior Show fea- tured the movie, Coney Island,', and a Valentine. Plans are now iff underway for a bigger and better Junior Prom. 'Q 'S xr I ,S N , V , .-.a A a 55 NlcNlillen. Y. Woolley, Y. Lodinslcy, il. Nloore, P. Lowman, P. Pritchard. Swrfmd Krans, K. Q I 0 X 'I Q Z 'M ' 4 X A-A 4 Looking back across the decades, we recall the Class of '49 adjusting themselves to their new surroundings. After making their debut, these new members of K. H. S. settled into the old grind and elected their officers: President, Karl Krausg Vice-President, Marianne Aberg Secretary, Barbara Lewisg and Treasurer, David White. The new rookies learned quickly as was evident by their successful dances and shows, and they soon came to feel that they belonged in K. H. S., willingly accepting the problems and responsibilities which accompanied their new position. Their alma mater is proud to recall this Soph Class and the enrichment it brought to its school. -r ' 11 - -7- 'T' f Q, ,gf L - 5 5 c X o-' x -. Through participation in the elections of their Student Council, and in the guidance which the Council provides, students gain useful knowledge of the science of democratic government, which aids them in pre- paring for the future and the place they will take in the world of tomorrow. With the passing of another year we find many additions made to the already long list of achievements of the Student Council, which this year has as its president, Frank Flaherty. If you should approach any student and ask him to name one , a,..,...,.......,,,,,,,.. ..... .. of the biggest events of the season, chances are he would reply, The outdoor pep rally held before the Kenmore-North Tona- wanda football game. On this occasion, sponsored by the Council, classes were dismissed one hour earlier so enthusiastic students could gather on the lawn of the school to be led in cheers and pep songs. i 1 Several successful drives were conducted with the help of the Council, one being to give further and to an European war orphan who was adopted last spring and another for the annual March of Dimes. To put everyone in that happy holiday mood, a Christmas dance was held in the gymnasium by the light of a festively lighted Christmas tree, and refreshments were served in the teachers' cafeteria. ln addition, bi-weekly dancing was continued, and a new system was inaugurated whereby refreshment tickets were pur- chased at the door. In every respect it is evident that this year's Student Council has measured up to the high standards set for it in the past. Mu. I Riqm,,,N 75 NATIONAL THESPIAN TROUPE 108 1'I'1'.fZ RHfl'.' Nl. Realizing the need for a suit- able band last fall, our school made plans for an aggregation to represent us. Besides the music makers themselves, there will also be a corps of drum majorettes to entertain the fans during the coming grid season. The entire group will be outfitted in colorful blue and white uniforms. ORCHESTRA This year being the first of its existence, the orchestra has set a line example for the future. ln choosing numbers, Mr. Ortolano has delved into semi-classic, classic, and modern music. The group has played for school assemblies and community organizations during this year. To end the season, the orchestra will enter the music festival in May and play for graduation in June. While playing Junior Varsity football, our pigskin hopefuls learn the fundamentals of blocking, tackling, and team play under actual game conditions. Mg Q1 xi riff., KE MOREV. . . You saw it-l saw it-in fact, over 23,000 people saw it. What? The Kenmore-North Tonawanda football game. Yes, 23,970 sat through four quarters of thrill-packed football to see the Blue Boys from K. H. S. come out on the heavy end of a 13-7 count. The game was undoubtedly the Hnest of the '46 season and possibly in Kenmore football history. Who did not thrill with excitement when Pete Miller and Dick Hutton crossed the infallible North Tonawanda goal lineg who wasn't stupified as the Red and Blue powerhouse from N. T. rolled up the field with HSonny Wactawski at the throttle? The hne coaching of Dick Olfenhamer and Bud Pitkin came to the surface as a Blue Devil offense manipulated the deceptive T in a style that would do honor to the Chicago Bears. Kenmore's seven blocks of granite earned well-deserved recognition by stopping Sonny to a mere four yards per try average and by coping with the Lumberjack front wall with unprece- dented ease. The cry Beat N. T. l engraved in the heart of every loyal Kenmore fan, reverberated from the big bowl, driving the team on to victory. The epic of this record smashing triumph will be retold by Kenmorites for years to come. Hats off to you-squad of 1946. The future football teams of K. H. S. will not have the able guidance of our renowned coach, Dick Offenhamer, as he has been appointed to the stall: of his Alma Mater. Coach Offenhamer returns to the Colgate campus as director of freshman athletics, a position which he well deserves. To com- pensate our loss, the Board of Education has appointed Bud Pitkin to succeed Mr. Olfenhamer as head coach. The appointment of Mr. Pitkin, the experienced and well-liked assistant coach of years gone by, affords a brilliant outlook for our future gridiron seasons. 90 BASKETBALL Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore Kenmore VARSITY SCORES Lockport . Those are a few ofthe common expressions used by the members of our basketball team who, this year, experienced the best season a Kenmore team has had for many years. Paced by co-captains Johnny Theobald and Louis Paar, with the assistance of Jack Harbrecht, Steve Wiktorowski, John Mcclatchey, Don Burns, and Dick Hutton, the team amassed a record of12 Wins and 2 defeats to gain second place in the Niagara Frontier League. Although few realize it, the Kenmore track team has had six consecutive seasons without knowing defeat. This, undoubtedly, is one of the most impressive records in the history of Kenmore. Individual honors for last year's team go to Captain Miller, the highest point scorer, also Rip Collins, ,lack Goldsmith, John Svilokos, who all set new records. The outstanding performance of' F V 1 the season was turned in by the Kenmore relay i l team. Jack Goldsmith, Dick Coates, Doug Kelly and George Miller combined to smash the existing record and turn in a time ofl minute 36.5 seconds. Under the able direction of Coach Bollier and Captain John Svilokos, the team will undoubtedly turn in another undefeated season, although there will only be live men back from last year's team. At the first triangle meet, Kenmore came through with a decisive victory, scoring sixty-one points over Lockport. The second meet was a quadrangular meet at North Tonawanda which again found Kenmore high scorer, racking up fifty-one points. The third and fourth meets were invitational meets held at Kenmore and North Tonawanda, in which Kenmore enlarged its win- ing margin by placing first in both. The most im- portant meet of the year was the Zone Six meet held at Kenmore which included all schools in Western New York. Once again scoring honors were captured by us, showing forty-three and one- half points to Hamburg's twenty-nine points, thus making Kenmore the undefeated champions. LNAPTAIN JOHN SVILQKOS 97 67 1 . i NJ ARCHERY The interest of these proud archers has encouraged the development ofthe sports in the past few years, and it is now open to all girls. Diplomas ollered by the Camp Archery Association are given to any bow-women who fulfill requirements at different yardages. Those who received the archer diploma, the highest award, last fall were Phyliss Senf, Sandra Detwiler, Helen Klager, and Gloria Oelfner. LACROSSE Flash-a new sport is being offered to the femininity of Kenmore Senior High. This year was the lirst time lacrosse has really gotten a start, and Midge Howe's team came out on top. Miss Kauffman is hoping for an even greater turnout next year and hopes the girls will take advantage of its presence as it is offered in only a few schools.
