Freeman, Principal: Gerry Dirk Douglas Hoffman, Phyllis Nonemacher, ,lamcs Michaelson. .laines Kilburn. ln order that a victorious peace be established in the world of tomorrow, it is necessary that the citizens of the future, the students of today, should understand the mechanics of government. The Student Council should play an important role not only in school life, but in the prepara- tion for useful service to community and country. A number of outstanding achievements have been credited to this yearas Student Council which functioned under the outstanding leader- ship of President William Condrell. During the course of thc year, two amendments to the con- stitution were adopted by the student body. One pertaining directly to the Council proposed that it consist of all four officers, rather than merely the president and vice-president of each class. The second amendment was proposed in order to remedy a weakness in the system of choosing cheerleaders, and provided that after September, l945. there would be nine cheerleaders-three from each class. ln the Fall of 1943, two large football dances were sponsored by the Student Council and held in the high school gym at which the cheerleaders led pep rallies. Several dances were held for the benefit of the Red Cross, and l0 at Christmas time the Student Council sponsored a dance at which Mr. Marvin R. Bush. as Santa Claus, was our guest. A jitterbug contest was held, with Santa as judge. Prizes were given to the winners, and candy was presented to every- one who attended. Also at Christmas time the Student Body pre- sented the Junior Chamber of Commerce with enough ornaments and tinsel to trim six large Christmas trees for the benefit of the soldiers stationed in nearby barracks. A number of firsts were established by this council. As examples, the minutes of each meeting were placed on the bulletin board for the inspection of the students: a new Alina Mater was chosen and words written for it: a definite time was set for Council meetingsg and the faculty cafeteria was turned into a snack bar for school dances. One of the most outstanding records of this year's Student Council has been the success of the War Bond drive and Red Cross campaign. At the time of printing 3227.000 of the 3250.- 000 worth of Bonds and Stamps set as a goal, had been sold. The ,lunior Prom brought the yearis activities to a climax with lovely Jean Seelbach as Queen. and Bob Markham as King, reigning midst the laughter and gayety of a street scene. All too soon came the third and final year at Kenmore. With these years becoming fond memories. the seniors decided to make these last few months ring with crowning achievements. Class oflicers for the Senior year were Bob Cho- toff. presidentg Marge Heardslee. vice president: Archie Christie. treasurer. and Gerry Dick. secre- tary. Keeping pace with their resolutions, the sen- iors smashed all previous records by netting 2ili28l.U0 from the Senior Carnival. Queen of the gay festivity was none other than ,lean Seelhach. former Junior Prom Queen. It was on this fate- ful occasion that Irwin t F'rank Sinatraut Zel- man made his first public appearance. Spring of '44 heralded the appearance of the Senior Play, Junior Miss which, under the guiding hand of Miss Strong. was enthusiastically re- ceived by all who attended. With the Senior Hall. social activities came to a triumphant close. Thus. the passing of the class of ,44 brings to a close another chapter in the history of Ken- more Senior High. It is a unique chapter marked by wartime restrictions and by the absence of students who have left for the armed forces. VIII A PRICE 5c SETTZO ACQUITTED Sensational new facts in the Arthur Snaffledagq murder case, brought to light by r. Settzo's own testimony yesterday gave the famous engineer his freedom. Mr. Settzo's testimony leading up to his acquittal was as fol- lows: I was spending the week-end .at Art Snaffle-dag's estate along with my colleagues Clyde Rathman and Dick Reid. Since we were there to meet representatives Bob Osgood and Harold Olmstead of the O'Neill Plas- tic Cement Company to discuss our new contracts, our secretaries Jeanne Morrison, Phyllis Munzert, and Nancy Robinson were with us. It was when Art and I were alone in the garden that the shooting occurred. Art had pointed to a group of weeds that were even scrawnier than the rest and an- nounced in all seriousness : 'See that plant over there? That is a young tree.' Now, this I couldn't believe. How could a little weed like that ever become a tree? Obviously, someone must have been gaffing my friend. With this in mind I remarked, 'Art, it must be apparent to you thaththis whole thing is a hoaxl' 'Imposs1ble,' was his rep y, 'I haven't seen an acorn around here for yearsl' U lMr. Settzo paused dramatically then shouted.J ' That was when I killed him. Any- one who would intentionally or un- intentionally make a pun as bad as that deserved to die! . Instantly the court was in an upl- roar. Settzo's attorney, Bob Nort , sued for dismissal which was imme- diately granted. The attorney for the state, Lorraine Hayes, and three jury members, Betty esbcott, Betty George. and Charlotte Busch, rushed over to shake the engineers hand. Immediately afterwar the. crowd surged forward and two of their num- ber Bill Wolf and Joe Cain carried Settzo from the courtroom on their shoulders, while Judge Peaches Packer led the jury in three rousing cheers. ................-.T- REPRESENTATIVE SELECTED Secretary of State Joyce Holzman announced today through Under- secretary Jane Bodenbender that Bruce Butler and Marjorie Beardslee have again been selected to represent the United States in the annua meet- in of the World Peace League to be held in Vladivostok, Russia next week. Miss Beardslee, you will remember, is the woman who won the hearts of the Russian people when at the recent Washington-Moscow banquet . tappe- tizers in Washingtong dessert in Mos- cowj she arranged to have served to everybody the favorite beverage of Russia, the Molotov cocktail. They give everybody such a warm feeling towards one another, Congressman John Sharp explained. Chief Justice of the League, Don Cornell, will preside over this year's meeting as usual. STATE AND LOCAL C ELECTIONS The final election returns show that the people of New York State are still solidly behind Governor Ronald Turner and Lieutenant Governor Rob- ert Tice. A new District Attorney, Carl Jacobson, was elected mainly on the prestige gained by his smas ing of a protection racket that had vic- timized such prominent establish- ments as Dev1in's Department Store, Broderson's Dress Shop, Swanton's Art Studio, and Choto f's Beanery. also re-elected was Senator Muriel o . The highspot of our local Kenmore politics was the election of Alfred Miles as our new Mayor. Other suc- cessful office seekers were Sheriff Don Murray, Judge Dick Freeman, and U. S. Representatives Nancy Noel, Joan Theobald, and Doris Webster. IDENTITY STILL MYSTERY The police are still unable to iden- tify an elderly man of about sixty-five years who was picked up last week by Patrolman Jack Quigley. Police phy- sician William Fink has announced that the man has probably been an amnesia victim for well over ten years. The only clue to his identity is that when found he was babbling over and over in a strange tongue what sounded like: Mairzy doats en doezy doats en liddel am zeedivyf' The most probable solution has been advanced by Doctor of Languages Ann Joyce Holland who believes that the victim has been isolated in a monas- tery for many years and the strange phrase is an ancient Tibetan tribal chant. Professor Donald Argus, the coun- try's foremost authority of American History, has declared that this chant was once a popular song in the Eng- lish language, but despite Argus s great prestige this theory has, of course, been disregarded as prepos- terous. 4 SUCCESSFUL OPENING The opening stage reversion of the old Civil War novel, Gone With the Wind at the Hamilton 'Theater last night was an outstanding success. Superb performances were given by the entire cast, Gilbert Gudgel giving an especially brilliant performance as the wind. Gil states that he gained proficiency in this part in high school where he was affectionatey called Hot Air by his admiring teachers. Other performers that received splen- did- plaudits from the critics were Edith Doerr, Bob Evans, Mary Alice Godfrey, and Irwin Zelman who por- trayed respectively Scarlett O'Hara, Rhett Butler, Melaney, and Ashe Wilkes. An especially effective job was done by the writers Jean Acker- man and Marilyn Hatch in their transfer of the story from novel to drama form. All of these points add up to a good plaiv, which according to its producers Bo Merkle and Vernon Moore, should have a longer run than the'Desert Fox, Rommel. -------......4............... CON DRELL ELECTED Terminating one of the most dy- namic presidential ,elections of our history, the final election returns, today showed that William Condrell is.the peop1e's choice for the thirty- third President of the United States. Mr. Condrell has the distinction of being the only President in our his- tory who has een elected by a unani- mous vote. Moreover, this feat seems even more remarkable when one re- members that even before the voting he predicted that be would win everxy vote. Of course no one but Condrel himself knows thereason for his cer- tainty. Perhaps he felt some psychic messagz. Then too, it might have been cause he was supported by Janet Hood's widespread chain of newspapers., Then too, the fact that he was the only candidate running for the office might have helped to bolster his confidence. II-lis campaign man- agers, Bill Kunz and John Obenauer, so ably extolled his desirable qualities for the presidency that all other can- didates gave up their campaigns as lost causes and dropped from the race.l Naturally, these theories are mere speculation and may be far from Condrell's true reasons. I Another unusual aspect of this elec- tion is that President Franklin D. Roosevelt declined to run for his eighth consecutive term. When asked w y he .had refused to be nominated, the acting President until Januar? first sighed wearily and murmure , Sorneliow I felt that I was getting in a ru . GOLD KEY RECIPIENT NAMED The Kenmore Junior Chamber of Commerce committee consisting of Dorothy Reilein, Jeanne Von'Daacke, Edith edder, Kay Moran, and Shir- ley Lumley have formally announced that Martin Feinen will receive the gold key which is awarded annually to the person who has done the most for Kenmore. The award will be presented at the Municipal building next Tuesday night. Of special interest is the news that Jean Seelbach, Dean of the Uni- versity of Rochester, will be a guest speaker at the banquet. November 13, 1960 , KENMORE EVENING NEWS Page 2 BOXING SCHEDULED I Local boxing promoter, Jack Meister, has arranged a real treat for all Fight fans next Tuesday night when he will stage the most talked .of bout of .he decade. This is, of course, the coming battle between Danc1nig Steve Zadosevich and Tiger Bill Johnson. Only by outbidding the cities o Moscow md London and holding many television conversations with Archie Christie and Bob Markham, the managers of Radosevich and Johnson respectively, was ie able to have Kenmore selected as the city in which the fight should be held. This bout is of such special interest because of the striking contrasts ietween the two fighters. Radosevich, as most fight fans know, is of rather frail stature, but he has made up for his subsequent lack of punching power ry his highly developed boxing skill and flashing footwork. Johnson, on the :ther hand, depends entirely on his own brute strength to wear down his xpponents with a savage relentless attack. K a . Opinions vary greatly as to what will be the outcome of this epic meeting if boxer vs. slugger. Victor Bargar, local sports writer, believes that John- :on's two-fisted smashing attack will prove fruitless against the deceptive iobbing and weaving style of the master boxer. New Yor City scribe, George Madsen contends that no matter how skillful he may be, the frail Radosevlch will never be able to withstand' the sledge hammer blows of Tiger Bill. Referee Ed. Burr has tactfully avoided any discussion of the merits of the .two fighters. An added attraction of this bout is that it will be held in the newly com- ileted Kenmore Olyimpia. The co-designers of this magnificent structure, Kathie Webster, Beverly oag, and Carol Kelley, are confi ent that every person in :he expected capacity crowd of 125,000 will have a perfect view of the ring. For those unable to attend, the bout is, of course, being televised by the McMu - en Electronics Company. The Economic Manager of the Olympia, Bob Carver, mas stated that if the present period of warm weather continues, the roof of :he building will be simgly rolled back and air conditioning dispensed with as ,s done during the base all and football games. Tickets are on sale at Rosen's Peanut Wagon, somewhere on lower Main street. ' MYSTERY SOLVED After a long and trying investiga- ,ion sprinkled with frequent frustra- zion and occasional nervous break- lowns Qwe just don't mention the two auicidesl the Athletic Commission, :onsistin of chairman Alan MacGam- vell, and members, Larry McElroy, Eugene Hertzog, Don Able, and Guy lohnson, have finally discovered how t was possible for Harold Auer to swim the 220 in minus two and a half ninutes. NEW INVENTION I A miraculous new invention in the scientific world was announced today and robably might be made available so tlie public in the near future, naybe. After several years of pains- :aking research the brilliant team of loyce Schwab and Pat Young have produced their masterpiece-the let propelled yo-yo. When asked .its value Miss Schwab modestly replied: 'It will revolutionize the wor1d's recreation. b D ' It is rumored that multi-millionaire Pom Cantwell supplied the financial sacking for the extensive research which led to this little wonder of our age. PARACHUTE ' nsvsnorsn Jim Moore, famed inventor, is working on a new type of parachute which consists of a rocket that is strapped point upwards to thewear- er's back. The theory behind the de- vice is that while gravity is pullin down, the rocket is pushing' upg anti if the rocket pushes just a little less than gravity pulls, the wearer floats gently to the ground without harming so much as a air on his headwespe- cially if he is bald. The falling person must take care that, while he is falling, he does not turn upside down, for t en the rocket will help gravity and send him zoom- ing to the earth head first, Now this is definitely to be avoided since it is annoying to have everybody calling you flatttE. I Tom Mc ee, local daredevil, gave a demonstration of this device at the Kenmore airport yesterday by leaping from a plane at five thousand feet. Twosof the spectators Ruth Merker and Gerry Dick, are of the opinion that McGee had used a rocket that perhaps was slightly ,too powerful. 'When last seen he was over Atlantic City, heading south. GOOD NEWS FOR BUS RIDERS Richard Foster, General Manager of the McGahey Brothers Transpor- tation Company, which holds a monop- oly, on all New York State transpor- tation, has announced his company's purchase of 100,000 new helibuses from the McDonald Helicopter Com- pany. This new model, designed by James Felger and Tom Christy, is re- ported to be a remarkable improve- ment over the earlier helibuses which had a capacity of only two hundred LAW SUIT DROPPED Last week, Steve Lukacz began court action against the Holmberg' Drug Company. Then, to the great surprise of al , he suddenly dropped the suit. Last night he called in members of the press and gave the followini explanation which he de- sired to ave printed. On Monday of last week, says Mr. Lukacz, whi e walking downtown to visit a friend at his job as a pan- handler the gives facials at the Betty Attmore Beauty Shopi I began to feel rather ill. I stopped in tofsee Dr. Wilber Dickinson, and I was surprised to learn that I had pneumonia. Nat- urally, my first move was to enter the nearest drugstore which happened to he McKeen's Drug Store, where I purchased a box of ,those new pills developed by Lucille Moelich, that are a guaranteed one-day cure for pneu- monia. However, it took two whole days to cure my illness so I, of course, called my lawyers Norman Joslin and Don Johnson and began suit against the Holmberg Drug Company which produces the pills. Then yesterday, to my great embarrassment, I sudden- ly realized why it took two days for my cure--my illnessohad been double pneumonia. I would like to take this oppor- tunity to make a public apology to all persons concerned. CITY BRIEFS Ai concert will be held at 8 P. M. tonight at Hood's Music Hall. 'B' l lt 4 fm 9 fs 5 4 ln lr fm 4 fr Class Poem of 1944 UNFINISHED BUSINESS This year we stand upon the rim of unknown venture, Challenged by a world engaged in livid strife. We youths whose future holds uncertain promise, Are faced with greedy hatred, by appalling loss of life. No stern or measured epic has set a patterned route By which the goal we seek can soon be won, Tomorrow,s mystic dawns await a sure and truer foot To quell men's warlike passion so long ago begun. Our own great hopes withdraw hefore the menace of the time Swept in fleeting swiftness in the wake of war's regime, The old wild joys and laughter, the carefree eager eye, These things of old, though not for us, are but a hattlecry For the trumpet of a prophecy in inner glory rings, Undaunted we shall meet the World on pinioned fledgling wings With eyes unveiled and youthful hearts matured to sober peace, We'll rid this troubled sphere of war and gain secure release. Recogni- tion was also given the Oflenharner-Pitkin coach- ing combination. which for eight years has so capahly directed the Kenmore grid effort. Later. a testimonial was held for the Niagara Frontier League Champs at the Seventy-fourth Armory with Colgate's famous football mentor. Andy Kerr, as the principal speaker. Sports celebrities. radio connnentators. fathers of the players. and prominent men of the village and town also attended. At the close of festivities, gold footballs were presented to the twenty-five lettermen, and the announcement was made by Coach Offenhamer that Tony Kristich would be next year,s captain. The many honors bestowed upon it attest to the ability of Kenmore's i943 football team. Kenmore defense moves in for the kill. - my LocKPoRT AT KENMORE 171 Kenmore, playing in defense of its 1942 Niagara Frontier League Championship title, first played host to Lockport, a game which saw the Blue and White sweep to a hard-earned 7-0 victory. ,lerry Ranney's 30-yard pass to ,lack Sweeney and a line plunge by Fullbaek George Broomfield produced the winning touchdown. Broomfield place-kicked the extra point to end the scoring. 1251 KENMORE AT LACKAWANNA 161 Quarterback Archie Christie played the stellar role in Kenmore's 25-6 defeat of the Steel City representatives by scoring a touchdown and pass- ing to ,lack Sweeney for two more. Halfback .lerry Ranney accounted for the final marker. 1141 KENMORE AT TONAWANDA 161 In a night game played during a continuous downpour, the Blue Devils continued their win- ning streak, subduing a previously undefeated Tonawanda eleven 14--6. After a scoreless first half, a Tonawanda lineman fell on a fumbled Kenmore kick in the end zone for the home teamis first and only tally. As a result of a long drive, highlighted by Fullback Broomf1eld's ex- cellent line bucking, the Blue and White aggre- gation matched this touchdown, and in the fourth quarter Halfback Bob Markham added the final six points by means of a reverse play. 1511 KENMORE AT LOCKPORT 161 The second Kenmore-Lockport encounter re- sulted in a 51-6 drubbing for the latter as Ken- more's grid specialists marched eight times across their opponent's goals. la 1-4. 2. Another point for Kenmore-'s Blue Devils. 171 NO. TONAWANDA AT KENMORE 1261 At the end of the first period of the annual North Tonawanda-Kenmore contest, the Lumber- jacks were enjoying a 7-0 edge. However, near the close of the second quarter the Kenmore gridsters connected to tie the count, Broomfield accounting for the first six points and Tony Kristich booting the seventh. Nothing could hold back the inspired Blue Devil outfit that took the field in the third semester. Shortly after the second half kickoff, Sweeney took a Christie pass to score, and later Markham car- ried the pigskin from the visitor's 2-yard line for another six points. Ranneyis pass to Christie was good for the final score of the game. 171 JAMESTOWN AT KENMORE 1271 Although the going looked easy for the Ken- morites in the first part of the game when scores were hung up by Jerry Ranney's passes thrown to Sweeney and Markham, and a line buck by Kristich, the ,limtown boys provided stiffer com- petition just before the half ended when, follow- ing a kickoff, a speedy visiting back raced for a touchdown. Then it was not until the final period that a second Ranney-to-Markham pass tallied the game's last score. 101 LACKAWANNA AT KENMORE 1381 The finis of the 1943 football schedule was played on a very icy Kenmore gridiron. ,lerry Banney proved to be the oppositionis biggest threat by personally scoring twice and throwing to George Graham for the third contribution. Broomfield, Nick Knezevich, and Guy Johnson also penetrated to the visitorls end zone for scores, and Broomfield and Graham each added a conversion. 55 SWIM lfollowing the examples set by the football team. the i943--lfl swimming squad also finished its schedule undefeated and untied. Although Coach Charles Pohl was none too optimistic in pre-season practice, Kenmore provided such still competition that often members of the B team were used in place of the varsity mermen. ln the first meet the Blue Devils splashed to 50-I6 victory over North Tonawanda and later in the season repeated the procedure 56-lll. Next Kenmore played host to last year's league champs, Tonawanda, and pinned a 38-28 deci- sion on the visitors. ln their second encounter, the Kenmorites subdued the red and white by a 36-30 score. Amherst provided the other oppo- sition losing twice, 52-I4 and 38-28. Larry lVlcl'ilroy and Harold Auer were unbeaten throughout the year. The l50-yard medley relay team of Mclflroy. ,lack Barnes. and Rudy Kraus set a new pool record of one minute 32.6 seconds. and Captain Mclilroy lowered the 100- yard backstroke time to one minute 8.6 seconds. ln the sectional championships held in the Kenmore pool the home squad provided its own private believe-it-or-not by having every blue and white swimmer who was entered place in some event. The final tabulation showed that firsts were taken by Auer, McElroy. Hoddick. and the medley relay team. Seconds were cap- tured by Kraus, Bud Decker. Roger Hancher. and the 200-yard free style relay team of Hod- dick. Don Maltzahn, Kraus. and Dick Mc-Mullen. The results of the individual championships held at Amherst disclosed that Auer, Mclfflroy. Kraus, Hoddick, and the medley aggregation had placed first, McMullen and the free style relay team had taken seconds, and George Miller had seized a third. Although the team won only six of its twelve games, every contest was worthy of being called a thriller. At the start of the season the prospect was not too bright. since only two of last year's letter- men. Captain-elect Al lVlacCamwell and Jack Sweeney were slated to return to action. Without experience but never without spirit, the Blue and White aggregation proved its worth by romping over its first four opponents, last yearas Niagara Frontier League champion, North Tonawanda, being among the defeated. However, Lady Luck turned her back on the Blue Devils during the next three contests as Lockport, Lackawanna, and North Tonawanda beat the home squad by one, two, and one points respectively. These close scores, which continued throughout the season. coupled with the fact that no league team completed its schedule with fewer than two de- feats, attest to the equality of competition. The individual highlight was hung up by Cap- tain lVlacCamwell who scored nineteen points during the first Lackawanna game. Among the teamis accomplishments were placing sccond in the league and defeating its arch rival. Toua- wanda, three consecutive times. lack Sweeney led the scoring department with lVlacCan1wcll second and Bob lVlarafino third. Next year returning varsity men augmented by this seasonis promising prelim outfit will face eight team competition since Niagara Falls, Trott. and LaSalle have decided to rejoin the league.
