In This posiTion The members oT The class oT '42 now Tind Themselves, and, realizing iT, They menTally lean baclc in Their easy chairs, puT on Their slippers, and philosophize on Their varied achievemenTs oT The lasT Three years. ATTer a glorious and soul-saTisTying vacaTion as graduaTes oT iunior high school, we Tound ourselves ThrusT inTo The company oT menTal and physical gianTs who were called by us poor sophomores- iuniors and seniors. T-lome room oTTicers were chosen, and The Tollowing class- oTTicers were elecTed: James Pilliey, president James Coleman, vice presidenT: Don Freudenberger, secreTary7 and Virginia CoTTman, Treasurer. Previously, The acTiviTies oT The sophomore class had been limiTed To raTher minor venTures. I-lowever, The class oT '42 resenTed This cusTom and inauguraTed a Truly sophomore insTiTuTion, The sophomore hop, The iniTial success oT which has been illusTraTed by iTs subsequenT yearly appearances. ATTer vacaTion, we reTurned To school in SepTember. BuT waiTl Should I merely say school? IT was a brand new building, The inside oT which sTudenTs and Teachers alike were eager To see. ln The Tall oT I ThaT year The pageanT dedicaTing The new school was sTaged. Much oT our enThusiasm was, oT course, caused by our naTural elaTion over being iuniors. The audience was TreaTed To a combinaTion oT Tarce and specTacle which, if applause can be used as a meTer, was enTerTaining To sTudenTs and TaculTy alike. AnoTher success was regisTered by The class oT '42 when iT presenTed The ScarleT Pim- pernel. IT was The TirsT class-sponsored moTion picTure shown aT The school. BuT The climax oT The iunior year is indispuTably The Junior Prom. Wifh Virginia CoTTman as chair- man and marine liTe as Theme, The class oT '42 ouTdid iTselT in presenTing an evening oT pleasure. Virginia CoTFman was crowned queen and Don Freuclenberger, king in The ceremonies. By universal agreemenT, a good Time was had by all. The year was soon over, however, and aTTer a summer oT resT and re'uvenaTion we prepared To enTer The lasT porTion oT our high school liTe. STudenTs look Torward To The senior year Tor wiTh iT comes The culminaTion oT parTicipaTion in all The acTiviTies and organizaTions. In This Trame oT mind we re-enTered Those classic porTals and soon chose as our oTTicers: James Pilkey, presidenTg Virginia CoTTman, vice presidenT1 Don Freudenberger, secreTary1 and STeven Lilak, Treasurer. In early November preparaTions were begun Tor The Senior Carnival and iT was a common sighT To see many a worThy, over-worked senior muTTering To himselT as he ambled along The corridor. EThel STevens and JaneT Holland, ioinT chairmen, endeavored To organize The various divisions inTo a well- conducTed program while scores oT oTher perspiring seniors sTrove valianTly To masTer Their respecTive parTs. When The memorable evening arrived, crowds Tilled The corridors, overTlowed The side-shows, and, in general, gave The Ticl4eT Talcers liTTle resT. AT The sTage show Dick Shepard, who ably Tilled The role oT masTer oT ceremonies, had The pleasure oT inTroducing The queen oT The carnival, June Reimann. The TesTiviTies oT The evening were concluded wiTh dancing To The caTchy, rhyThms oT Jaclc Spencer's orchesTra. OTher winTer class acTiviTies were The ChrisTmas parTy and The TalenT show- movie program presenTed in February, The laTTer being under The direcTion oT BeTTy Hughes and Wilson Shaw. AT TirsT no one would commiT himselT, louT Tinally The senior play commiTTee came ouT oT iTs huddle and announced meelcly enough ThaT The American Way by KauTman and T-larT was To be presenTed. Those quieT words were more porTenTous Than They sounded, Tor The producTion would require a casT oT more Than one hundred, and scores oT cosTumes would be needed. NeverTheless, Through The Tine acTing oT Richard Simplcins and CarmeliTa Fisher, The Two leads, and The unceasing energy and direcT- ing abiliTy oT Miss Eve STrong, The American Way was a rousing success.
