Next year a new school will provide a better education for those who follow. It is the purpose of this book to preserve 1966 — the last year of KendallviUe High School. SENIOR HISTORY s Freshmen we realized we would graduate in the -eat year of 1966; therefore our class party was : tirely decorated with the number 6 ever V. lere. As approached our Sophomore year, we were confronted with the task of choosing our class jacket. Our final decision was myrtle green. Much to our surprise we were tagged as Jolly Green Giants rather than turtles. Along with our Junior year came another task — that of choosing our class rings. After much debate the style Telstar was chosen. Soon the excitement of our first Junior-Senior Prom had us all looking forward to visiting the wonderful Land of Oz. At last our Senior year is here. We realize we will be the last class to graduate from Kendall- ville High School. Even when K. H. S. has been forgotten by most, it will live on in the hearts and minds of the class of ' 66. FHA Future Homemakers of America, an organization for young women interested in homemaking, is open to any girl in high school who has had one year of home economics. Every year the state organization sets up goals each chapter is to meet in order to be an honor chapter. This year the two objectives concerned (1) Morals and Manners Matter and (2) Good Family Relations. The chapter met these requirements by having Daddy-Date Nite, a party for younger brothers and sisters, and a Mother and Daughter Banquet, at which the speaker discussed these two objectives. Individual FHA degrees were also conferred at this time. FHA members and their fathers enjoy Daddy-Date Night , one of the highlights of the year. JCL: INSTILLED AN INTEREST The members of the Junior Classical League studied Roman culture by attending various meet- ings throughout the year. An initiation bringing in the new members and a presentation of the Muses composed the No- vember meeting. Traditional with the Christmas season, J.C.L. members celebrated the Roman holiday, the Sa- turnalia, by contributing money to CARE. The Toledo Museum was chosen for the annual J.C.L. trip this year. Those wishing to go went by bus Easter vacation. The J.C.L. members also had their annual ban- quet with the slave auction and games. Those at- tending this event dressed in togas, the dress of the Roman citizen, if they were sophomores; and tunics, the dress of the Roman slave, if they were freshmen. At the end of the banquet the slaves were freed. As can be seen, the Junior Classical League has enjoyed a very fruitful year. How could we ever forget the Y-Teen Dance? All those kleenexes! Remember the Mother-Daughter Dessert and the wonderful speaker from New Zealand? Chicago anyone? The juniors and seniors will never forget that wild trip we took and all the money we spent on those irresistible shoes and purses. And of course we ' ll never fail to remember the shining faces of the children at the Christmas party. For the first time in several years, a musical was presented — The Music Man. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur ' s Court was another play that was presented earlier in the year. To join the society, one must successfully pass a tryout before being accepted as an apprentice. His apprenticeship lasts for one semester before he may become a full member. If he becomes a member, he then tries to earn points to become a Thespian by acting in a play, working backstage, working on a committee, or by selling tickets for the per- formances. Because of hard work and co-operation, this group can look back on a very successful year. Getting ready for the big show. We hope it will bring you many happy memories of all the year ' s highlights. In September the sales of the yearbook began, and the theme and colors for the cover were decided. Much time was spent in getting ads, taking stu- dent and activity pictures, setting up page dum- mies, and making last minute changes. The staff would especially like to thank the spon- sors for their help in presenting the Kay Aitch Ess to you. K-Klub members ran the concession stand at football games, sold candy at basketball games, and sold county directories to earn money for several banquets and a dance. Major events this year were the Fall Sports Award Banquet, the K-Klub Dance, the Elks Banquet, and the spring All Sports Banquet. SOUTH SIDE MARKET VARSITY AND JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL The Kendallville Comets finished a dismal last in the NEIAC conference with an — 9 record. Although not the possessors of a great record, the Comets did possess courage and fought valiantly to the end. Larry Sibert was named to the NEIAC second team; and Dick Houser, Lyman Holbrook, and Stan Fraze received honorable mention. The Junior Varsity team almost reversed the tables as they compiled a 6 — 1 record. From the season of the Meteors, it looks as though the new East Noble Knights should start out on top. By placing 2nd in the Sectional and 3rd in the Regional, the team ran in the state meet. This was the first time a KHS cross-country team had run in the state meet. Competing against the toughest teams the state had to offer, the Comets finished 1 1th. With only two of the top eight runners gradu- ating, the team should do well next year. This record extended the Comet ' s winning streak to four seasons without a loss on the home course. The Comet golfers finished 6th in the conference and look forward to another fine season next year. GOLF TEAM: Dan Radcliffe, Mike Young, Mike Wilondek, Dean Hamman, Jon Hossinger, Gene Racht, Coach. WRESTLING This year, for the first time in the history of our school, wrestling was introduced into the sports pro- gram of KHS. The 1965-66 season was successful in building a foundation for wrestling, but it will take several years for our wrestling team to develop. The East Noble wrestling team can look forward to a good season next year since all the members of this year ' s team will return for the 1966-67 season. HOSSINGER REFRIGER. ' TION. INC. WAWK AM-FM STEREO 1570—93.3 DEDICATION: To Miss Varilaman To Miss Stephe In appreciation for all the years of service they have given to Kendallville High School, we dedicate this 1966 yearbook to Helen Vardaman and Mae Stephens. Miss Yardman has served here 39 years as a botany, biology, and home economics teacher. During this time she has been head sponsor of Y-Teens for 36 years. Miss Stephens has taught mathematics, book- keeping, consumer economics, and explora- tory teaching at Kendallville High School for the past 40 years. She has been a Y-Teen sponsor since coming here and organized the Future Teachers of America club in 1956, which she has sponsored since its inception. Both of these teachers have contributed greatly to the educational system at Kendall- ville High School and to the education of each of their students. They will long be re- membered as two outstanding teachers of Kendallville High School. FAREWELL SENIOR FAREWELL The last chapter in the history of Kendallville High School is complete. As the book is closed, we, the 1966 graduates and the last graduating class of KHS, will remember the days we have spent here. Although as freshmen we lacked the knowledge and poise which seemed to be present in the upperclass- men, we gradually acquired that self-confidence through the constant guidance and assistance of our teachers and supervisors, as well as the continuous study on our part. As sophomores we selected our class jackets — green with white K and numerals. The advent of our junior year marked the final half of our high school career. With two years of ex- perience behind us, our thoughts were turned to the future. Books, term papers, and themes, together with many hours of study and research, had become a part of our everyday life. Now, as seniors, we realize the shortness of the years. Our classes, club meetings, proms, and other social activities are only memories of bygone years. Friend- ships are left behind us as we go our separate ways. Before us is stretched a world of opportunities, but there is a twinge of sadness as we leave the halls of KHS. It is here that we have developed into in- dividua l young men and women willing to face new challenges. We know, too, that graduation is not the end but the beginning of a vast, new life for us, the Class of 1966. With this final page, we close the history book of Kendallville High School forever.
