With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, They have wandered into an unknown land, Think of them still as the same, we say: They are not dead — they are just away! Adapted from James W. Riley 1 Mr. Schwab served as a member of the Kendall- ville High School faculty and administration for thirty-five years. His dedication to his work is il- lustrated by the fact that he missed only one day of school during this entire period. In appreciation for his important contribution to the education of each of his students, we dedicate this book to our former math instructor and junior high principal, Frank J. Schwab. As sophomores, the main event was the selection of a class jacket which would be worn with pride. After much deliberation, the class chose blue jackets with white K ' s and numerals. The pace accelerated as we began our junior year. Now preparation started for our final year. We solicited magazine subscriptions since the proceeds of the mag- azine sales finance the Junior-Senior Prom. Another milestone of our high school career came when we chose our class rings. What an eventful day! Then came our class party Junior Swings . Oh, the memories! We reached the climax of our junior year with the Junior-Senior Prom, an event we had long awaited. Now we were on the doorstep of our final and most significant year. At last, our senior year arrived. There were senior pic- tures to be taken, announcements and name cards to be ordered, a yearbook to be compiled, and a Junior- Senior Prom to be enjoyed. With great pride and much joy, tinged with a bit of sadness, we reached the goal for which we had been striving — baccalaureate and graduation day. STUDENT COUNCIL: Help Form Student Policy The Student Council of Kendallville High School is a charter member of the Indi- ana Association of Student Councils. Promoting better understanding between the students and faculty, the Council works hard in initiating new ideas to improve school life. Among the forthcoming changes proposed by Student Council is a Dress Code to improve the appearance of the students and to improve the atmos- phere in which they work. The Student Council also promoted a Save the Children project in which cloth- ing was collected for needy families in depressed areas. A notable accomplishment of the year was the installation of a National Honor Society for our school and the initiation of the first members of this group. Each summer two council members are sent to a workshop at Indiana Uni- versity where they gain ideas which will be beneficial to the improvement of our council. Every two years the National Association of Student Councils sponsors a European tour for worthy council members. This summer, Dianne Diggins will go on the tour. HILKERT PANKOP, INC. Dodge Cars and Trucks BOYS ' STATE Hoosier boys, attending Boys ' State on the Indiana Univer- sity Campus, from all parts of the state took part in daily marching drills and learned about Indiana ' s city, county, and state levels of government. The students, as Nationalists or Federalists, competed against each other for offices; then, they united to govern Boys ' State. Through a combination of fun and learning, these boys became aware of the rights and duties of citizenship. Hoosier Girls ' State was a mythical state made up of 919 Indiana junior girls. These stu- dents campaigned, voted, and served in offices won by elec- tion or appointment. Through actual practice and control, the girls gained the knowledge of the fundamental principles of Indiana government. Equally important, the girls acquired a greater respect for and under- standing of local, county, and state government. The Future Homemakers of America is a relatively new or- ganization at Kendallville High School. The organization which was transferred to the Kendallville High School had been established at the Rome City School. The Chapter ' s membership for 1964-65 was thirty mem- bers. There were six girls who attended the State Conven- tion at Indiana University last June when Kendallville was recognized as an Honor Chapter. Six other girls are plan- ning to attend the Convention this year. It will be held at Ball State University in June. The Kendallville Chapter was the hostess for the Fall Dis- trict meeting, which was held on October 17, 1964, in the Kendallville High School. About 500 FHA girls from sur- rounding areas attended. The money making project for the Chapter is selling cook- books. In April twenty-six girls received degrees for work completed during 1964-65. Some of the outstanding programs for the chapter this year were Daddy Date Night, Traffic Officer, and the Mother-Daughter Banquet. One of the first activities was a trip to Garrett to visit the elementary school library which is operated by Miss Lois Cobber. It is considered one of the finest libraries of its kind in northern Indi- ana. At another meeting Mrs. Horall, the school psy- chologist, spoke to the group about the work she is doing in our school. At Christmas time the members of FTA brought gifts to send to the Fort Wayne State School as they have done i n the past, and the junior members of our club again visited Manchester College for a day to attend classes and to see the campus. The cooperating teachers of the exploratory teaching program were guests at the April meeting of FTA. This was one of the clubs activities for Teaching Ca- reer Month. Singing Latin songs and participating in the Olym- pic games followed sack lunches. The November meeting combined an initiation and a candlelight ceremony. The initiates, given a question on mythology by a sybil, answered before three judges. When a candidate had correctly answered or paid a penalty, he was given a pome- granate seed. This act qualified the candidate for the initiation ceremony. Fifty-one members accompanied by Miss Eminger, the sponsor, and three mothers attended the Indiana Junior Classical League Convention at Clowes Hall, Butler University, on March 27. The Roman Banquet, which was held on April 23, was the organization ' s final program. The theme was The Founding of Rome, and the banquet included a slave auction, a four course meal, and the liberation of the slaves. J.C.L. Y-TEEN: Strive to Build Individuals Y-TEEN The Y-Teen theme this year was Y-Teens . . . Key to the Future. Through the year many interesting activities were carried out to convey meaning to this theme, including a picnic at Bix- ler Lake, the Father-Daughter Dessert, the Chil- dren ' s Christmas party, the Y-Teen Semi-Formal Dance, the Mother-Daughter Dessert, and the Sen- ior Farewell. Y-Teens teaches young girls all over the world the meaning of living a life with high morals and a spiritual understanding of Christ. It seeks to en- courage young women to strive for a better world. It also helps young girls to work and to live to- gether in harmony with one another. Each member of Y-Teens participates in the year ' s program by serving on a committee, leading sing- ing, giving devotions, or by having a special part in a program. This teaches young women the art of working together peacefully, which is an impor- tant factor in the future of young adults. WIG AND PAINT: The Wig and Paint Society of Kendallville High School had a successful year. Again, the club members proved what can be accomplished when all work together to succeed. This year Wig and Paint presented two plays: The Mouse that Roared and an evening of one-act plays. A member of Wig and Paint may demonstrate any one of a variety of talents. One might work backstage on lighting, scenery, make-up or costumes; one might sell tickets, work on various committees, or act. Any of these various activities will result in the accumulation of the points necessary to become a Thespian. A Wig and Paint member is able to gain both practical experience and skill in dramatic arts. One acquires pa- tience, faces disappointments, achieves pride in one ' s work, and learns to accept constructive criticism. With all members working for the good of the organiza- tion, Wig and Paint can take pride in its accomplish- ments. Kris Irons, as Queen Gloriana, presents to Mike Reed, as Tully, her scarf. THESPIANS: Acted Well Their Parts The Thespians of Kendallville High School are members of Troupe 1106 of the National Thespian Society. To become a Thespian, a member of Wig and Paint must earn 10 points which is equal to 100 hours of stage work. When the required number of points have been earned, one must demonstrate his ability in a phase of the dramatic arts at a formal ceremony. A person accepted for Thespian mem- bership must continue to strive for excellence in his performances. Every Thespian member constantly works toward the level required to become a Five-Star Honor Thespian, which requires a 600 hour record of stage work. A Thespian aims to set standards of dramatic ex- cellence in his club, to promote interest in theater activities among the students, and to uphold the Thespian motto: Act well your part, there all the honor lies. Stu- dents did exceedingly well in both the District and State Solo-Ensemble Contests and the State Con- test for Bands. Winter and spring concerts, as well as two audi- torium programs, were given by the band. All of these performances were very entertaining and suc- cessful. Members of the band covered many miles as they marched in the Auburn Fair Parade, the LaGrange Corn School Parade, and the Memorial Day Parade. To add to these numerous performances, the band played at all home football games. In addition, the Dance Band displayed much talent at the Band Carnival, Band Parents ' Association, Volunteens Dance, Y-Teens Dessert, Business and Professional Women ' s Club, and Solo-Ensemble Contest. All of the students participating in band shared many enjoyable and meaningful experiences that increased the prestige of the Kendallville High School Band. KA T AITCH ESS: Toiled Over Our Yearbook The 65 yearbook staff has worked very hard this year to present to you a clear picture of our present school life. Work on the yearbook started in September when meetings were held to elect the theme and to decide on the cover of the book. Then we had the tedious job of getting ads and subscriptions, taking pictures throughout the school, setting up page dummies, identify- ing pictures, and keeping copywriters busy with last minute changes. Before we knew it, it was time to send our book to press. It is our hope that this edition of the KAY AITCH ESS will serve as a reminder of this year ' s highlights and that it will bring you many enjoyable memories. We would like to express our appreciation to our sponsors, Mr. Metz and Mrs. Frank, who have helped us present this year ' s KAY AITCH ESS to you. In view of the lack of victories this year, this group should be highly commended for its spirit and backing. Each spring the Pep Club elects cheerleaders, whom they help send to camp, and officers for the next year. The Pep Club holds a Christmas party and a party in the spring to give merits to outstanding members. For the tourney this year, the Pep Club added something new; they wore red carnations on their regular uniforms. This year the Pep Club was taken over by two new sponsors: Mrs. Diggins and Mr. Scheeler, both of whom ably assisted the group. The officers were: President, Diane Rogers; Vice- President, Therese Andrysiak; Secretary, Barb Snapp; and Treas- urer, Rosemary Drerup. The officers and sponsors did a fine job in keeping this organization in top form. Win or lose, enthusiasm runs high. Club Officers Open your eyes, girls, we may win yet. Wild enthusiasm exemplifies the spirit of our Pep Club. This club also serves as a medium for presenting awards to Comet lettermen. Members of the K-Klub worked hard in run- ning the concession stand during football sea- son and selling candy during basketball season to earn money for the banquets and dance. The major events on the K-Klub calendar were the Fall Sports Awards Banquet, K-Klub Dance, the Elks Banquet, and K-Klub Banquet. At the K-Klub Banquet the annual Pop Guy- mon Award is presented to the outstanding senior athlete. In 1964 John Bodenhafer re- ceived the award, and in 1965 Gary LaRue was selected. At this banquet in 1965, eight seniors received their honor jackets. STAR DRY CLEANERS 438 South State Street K-KLUB MEMBERS: ROW 1 : Dwight Thomas, John Smith, Gene Lawrence. KENDALLVILLE ' S GRIDIRON TEAMS The Kendallville Comets had a rather frustrat- ing season this year, which resulted in the — 9 record of the Comets. Although this record was not impressive, the boys showed great stamina and should be commended for their efforts. In a few games, statistics proved that the Comets had the upperhand even though the score- board did not show it. There were some bright spots in the course of the season; Charles Courtney, center and team captain, was named to the All-Conference First Team. Seniors Perry Lawrence, Gary LaRue, and Steve Herendeen also received honorable men- tion in conference ratings. Several freshmen and sophomores saw varsity action this year which should keep prospects high for the coming sea- son. AMD JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL The Junior Varsity had an impressive record of five wins and only two losses for the 1964 season. Coached by Don Sherman and Todd Clark, the Meteors made a fine show- ing in every game. Many hours of practice helped to develop the younger boys ' talents. John Smith, who made five touch- downs in one game, was the leading scorer for the Junior Varsity team. COMETS: Roused Our School Spirit The Kendallville Comets operated under a handicap this year in that they began their season without a letterman on the team. The team was composed mainly of Juniors and Sophomores; however, the un- derclassmen did an excellent job with the help of their coach, John Lebo. Although the Comets didn ' t have the most impressive season record, they did show the skill they had developed when they defeated Avilla 75 — 71 in their first game of the Sectional. They were defeated in their next game by Waterloo. The season record was 1—22. Mr. Lebo ' s young team has shown a tre- mendous improvement since the beginning of the year. Next year they will be the team to watch. Randy Ackerman attempts to block an opponent ' s shot. STECKLET ' S MILL AND HATCHERY, INC. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM: ROW 1: Manager Dave. UNDERCLA SSMEN: COMETS OF THE FUTURE 1K£3HJH .-, i Although Mr. Racht had a very fine team at the beginning of the year, he was continually losing his players to Mr. Lebo for the varsity. The freshman class showed great talent in giving Gene Racht the players he needed. Jim Wogo- mon, Stan Fraze, and Gary Thrapp were among the freshmen who provided the Junior Varsity team with the ability needed. The meteors progressed throughout the year. They did, however, lose their Jun- ior Varsity Tournament at Angola. With the fine coaching of Mr. Racht and the vigor of these young boys, Kendallville is assured of an excellent team in the future years at Kendallville High School. CROSS COUNTRY: Ran Miles to Victory The 1964 edition of the Comet Cross Country team finished the season with a good 9 — 7 mark. The sport is still very new at KHS, but interest in it is growing rapid- ly. This year, under the direction of the Coach Dave Bowers, the team has been very successful. Cross country is a very exhausting sport and requires a great deal of stamina and will-power; KHS runners showed that they possessed these qualities. Since only two of the runners are seniors. Coach Bowers is looking forward to a fine 1965 season. Desper leads the field STROMAN ELECTRONICS 1964 GOLF TEAM: Dick Eddy, Dan Radcliff, Dean Hamman, Tom Sims, Dave Cookerly. Their only defeats came at the hands of Auburn, Concordia, and Garrett. The team started the season very well and won their first seven matches. They continued to play excellent golf all spring and placed 6th in the Conference and 13th at the Sectional. The Reserves also had a great season. They compiled a 9 — — 1 record. Every man on the golf team was an underclassman so their achievements were doubly satisfying. With everyone returning, the 1965 team performed very well. The boys showed a great deal of enthu- siasm and confidence. They started the season by winning their first five matches and ended the sea- son wi th a good record of 1 — 1 — 1 . 1965 GOLF TEAM: ROW 1: Dan Radcliff, Mike Wilon- dek, Dick Eddy, Jim Beights, Dave Cookerly, John Hoss- inger. TRACK: Battled on the Cinders 1964 was another fantastic year for track at Kendallville High School. For the second straight year, the Comet cinderman went undefeated in dual meets, won the NEIAC Conference championship, and won the Goshen Relays. The Comets finished a strong second to the powerful Elkart team in the sectional for the second consecutive time. To- ward the end of the season the team was plagued with in- juries, but it remained unbeatable. During this great season the Comets set 7 new school rec- ords. Dave Hart set new records in both hurdle events, Rick Kirschner in the 220, Steve Reith in the 440, and Dave Desper in the mile. A team of Dave Hart, Rick Kirschner, Dick Sibert, and Roger Elliott set a new record in the 880 yard relay, and John Bodenhafer tied his own record in the pole vault. Dave Hart and Rick Kirschner also represented KHS in competition at the State Track Meet. Although some fine athletes graduated in 1965, the 1965 Kendallville Track Team is still no pushover. The team is young, confident, and gave KHS boosters many thrills during the season. Dave Desper lowered his own record in the mile, and the track team performed well with a record of six wins and four defeats. Rick Kirschner clinches first place in the relay. BASEBALL: Exhibited Sportsmanship on the Diamond The Kendallville baseball team had a fairly successful 15 — 14 record in 1964. The playing was better than the record indicates since they lost numerous games by a close margin and were hampered by injuries. The Comets started slowly during the spring, but their rec- ord improved. When summer arrived, the Comets had a team to be reckoned with. The team finished strongly by winning 10 games in a row. The Comets have only three returning letter- men for the 1965 season, but they fielded a strong team. The team, composed mainly of underclassmen, battled vigorously for starting positions. The team showed a great deal of balance, and with their hustle and speed they ended the season with a record of three wins and nine losses. Special events of the year included an evening of swimming at the Club Olym- pia in Fort Wayne, ice skating at the Coli- seum, play days at Auburn and Huntington College.
