Indications seemed to be that hard luck plagued them this year, although they boasted a taller team than those of many forerunning seasons. Coach Rhodes, with the assistance of Mr. Blclntosh, brought the boys a long way by the end of the season but were defeated in the Sectional by a strong Howe Military team in the final seconds of play. X, J X S f ,W A 1 I ,- Our High School Is the Key to the Future of All Who Enter 1 SENIORS Class History mev- As the graduating class of 1959, we are nearing the end of the trail that leads from kindergarten to the time we walk up to receive our diploma. The part of this trail which led through high school formed an exciting portion of the journey, a part upon which We like to look back as we reminisce about the many experiences we have had outside the formal classroom. XVe really felt that we were taking our place in high school when we entertained our parents and friends at our Freshman- Parent Night. As sophomores we participated in more activities and looked forward to wearing our new class sweaters, which were delph blue with white letters. The Iunior-Senior Banquet was the climaxing event in our jun- ior year, but our magazine sales, which topped all previous records, also kept us busy in the fall. Our class rings were eagerly antici- pated by all of us. The usual senior whirl has now caught us: ordering name cards and announcements, being measured for caps and gowns, preparing the yearbook. completing college entrance forms, and checking job 'M' K possibilities. ,.,,,,,, Each year has held something new and exciting for us, and we will long remember and cherish the memories of our school davs. til, ,fam Officers Top Phil Bolenhaugh president Center: Tom Lindsey w vice-president kay... Q! ce, V Q The Most Exciting Event of All Was If you were a junior or a senior last spring, you kept a Rendezvous of the Starsv in the little gym, for this was the theme of the annual Junior-Senior Banquet, which was presented by this year's graduating class with the help of their junior sponsor, Miss Bessie Power. Heavenly creatures, depicting a variety of activities, decor- ated the walls while on the stage a golden stairway led to a boy and girl up in the clouds. Clouds individually imprinted with the name of each senior filled the wall behind the speakers table. The special angelsf' the senior class officers, had their pictures there also. Phil Bolenhaugh was emcee for the event while Mr. Vern Steckley, guest speaker, presented Stairway to the Stars. After the Grand March there was dancing to the music of Fred Autenrieth,s orchestra. . FLINT AND WALLING MANUFACTURING CO., INC. 34 Junior History juniors always look forward to two activities during their junior year: the selecting of their class rings and the planning for the junior- senior prom. This year was no exception, for they awaited the arrival of their rings with eager anticipation and spent many hours during the second semester attempting to make their prom a neyer-to-be-forgotten event. The juniors worked hard selling magazines to build up their treas- ury. After an extended time limit, they broke all former selling records and assured their financing of the prom. Country Charmf' which was the theme of their class party, was another big attraction for them. They also sponsored Comet Capers, an after-game dance to honor the Comets. Mindful of their motto, Not at the top, but climbing, they have enjoyed this year to the fullest. and it is certain that when they think of their high school days, they will think of their junior year as one of the happiest. 01 fl 'Af Class of 1960 'J----f-A 1537 vs ,. They study the fundamentals of good gov- ernment and learn to apply them in a practical state government situation. Each boy or girl is assigned to either the Fed- eralist or the Nationalist party. In these parties, they compete against each other for party positiong then they combine their efforts for party unity. All these ac- tivities make well-rounded citizens for tomorrow. There are many projects in which the Y-Teens learn to do for othersg for example, the Childrens Christmas Party, the Thanksgiving haskets, and the XYorld Clothing Drive. For the Thanksgiving haskets each memher hrings a donation of food so a few needy families might have a happy Thanks- giving. For the XYorld Clothing Drive each mem- ber hrings clothing to give to this very worth- while function. The meetings every other Tuesday evening are often presented hy a spiritual or educational speak- er. Every year the Y-Teens have two special meet- ings, the purpose of which is to honor their fathers through a Father-Daughter Dessert, and to honor their mothers with the fXIother-Daughter Tea. Une of the highlights of their activities is the animal spring Y-Teen formal dance. CABINET: Hou' I: Nlrs. Kinnnell. Mrs. Black, Nliss Yardaxnan, Nliss Eniinger, Nlrs. Peek. Bliss Stephens. The students continually strive for a cultural knowledge by their participation in acting, backstage work, and public performances. The Thespians sponsored two public per- formances with the aid of XVig 81 Paint: one consisting of two one-act plays and the second a three-act play. A mid-year initiation of nine new members increased the Thespian enroll- ment to 21. Six members attended the summer National Dramatic Arts Convention, which is held biennially at Indiana University. T NVig 61 Paint was organized to train students interested in dramatics. To enter, one must successfully pass a tryout before being accepted as an apprentice. His apprenticeship lasts for one semester before he may become a full member. Thespians hold all offices, but two representatives of NVig 61 Paint, a boy and a girl, may attend Thespian executive board meetings to represent Wig 61 Paint. Their programs have included a discussion of stage lighting, a study of contemporary plays and a study of Shakespeare including a cut from i'The Taming of the Shrew. They have presented three one-act plays: Make Room for Rodney, Aria da Capo, and A Minuetf' Two tryouts for new members and a Christmas party were also held. Wig 61 Paint members can earn Thespian points by taking part in these programs and by helping with the plays by working backstage, making costumes, building sets, and selling tickets. Because of the cooperation of many, this club has been able to carry out the aims of Thespians. Students learn by their participation in these programs which consist of dramatic, musical, and variety presentations. The Halloween Masquerade Party and a Christmas pro- gram were given by the combined vocal and instrumental de- partments, which colorfully showed variations in selections and presentation. English V and speech classes entertained with pantomimes, speeches, and interpretive readings. Paid performances add to the excellence of this program. Litia Namoura captivated the audience with Far-Eastern and Spanish dances. Especially well-liked was jose Silva, Mr. Ban- jo, whose bright eye and nimble Hnger provided interesting musical entertainment. john Scanlan raised the appreciation of Shakespeare by his impersonations of fine actors and char- acters of Shakespearean plays. A demonstration of antique fire arms and their improvements was given by Ray Sullivan, an expert marksman. One of these was the an Halloween Masquerade Party in auditorium. Others included 4 ? the Christmas program and the annual May Festival. In addition to these group activities, many of the chorus members practiced many hours for contests. Seven of the twelve groups who entered the District Solo and Ensemble Contest at Ft. Mixed Chorus is composed of twenty-three stu- dents: six sopranos, six altos, five tenors, and six basses. Sight reading is one of the major activities of the group in practice. They have also used the re- corder to tape their voices, thus giving themselves a chance to criticize their singing and improve their technique. Popular songs and barbershop harmony are the fields in which they have the most interest.
