We are nearing the goal we set for ourselves when We were freshmen and chose Judy Thompson to lead our class. Our number swelled as students from various grade schools joined us and the Freshman-Parent Night held the spotlight for our first year. As we be- came sophomores, we participated in more activities, beginning to take our place in school events. Our Iunior Convention, patterned after the na- tional convention, was great fun as we campaigned for our candidates for class president. Our magazine sales topped all other previous classes, with Rena Ortstadt as high saleman. The junior-Senior Banquet took a great deal of our time, but we thought it the best ever. The theme, which was our secret, did not leak out until only a few days before the big occasion. Our senior year had just begun when We found ourselves in the usual senior scurry. NVe added the preparation of the yearbook to our other curricular and extra-curricular activities. XVe ordered all those things near to the hearts of seniors and planned for the final events of our senior year. The four years of high school have sped hy, but the many memories will always linger in our minds. Top: Tom Hoffelder, president. Center: john Blech, vice-president. Because of the influenza epidemic, the crowd was not so large, although this year's freshman class is the largest in the history of the school, However, parents, teachers, and freshmen agreed that the meet- ing was a success. The appearance of parents whose sons and daughters were ill on parent night was especial- ly gratifying. To parents and teachers, the first hour of the eve- ning when parents are shown around the building and introduced to teachers and administrators is the most interesting. The freshmen, however, think of their ap- pearance on the stage as the high point. The program was a series of living pictures in which every freshman was introduced by a narrator. The open- ing picture presented students representing all the grade schools from which students came to the class of 1961. In the remainder of the program students were pic- tured in school activities in which they a1'e participating this year. Boys showed their projects made in shop class and illustrated the kinds of agricultural judging. A reading represented NVig tt Paint. Freshmen twirlers did a routine. The freshmen in chorus sang and the band members played. Piano and vocal ducts showed more musical talent. Excellent piano accompaniment and a four piece band set the mood for each picture. The most colorful picture was the tableau of the freshmen in football wearing varsity suits. C.A.A. girls were featured in a tableau of games popular with the group. An important part of school life, the school's health services, especially those for freshmen, were pictured. Remembered also were the boys who go on patrol daily for school safety. The conclusion of the evening was a social hour in the little gym. Refreshments from two beautiful tables were served by the advanced home economics class. KENDALLVILLE FOUNDRY - Drv. VI ULIA ATX CHORUS: Vocal Harmony Enriches the School Year The vocal department, under the capable direction of Mrs. julia Atz, was composed of two main groups: a girls' chorus and a mixed chorus. In addition, the two sextets provided music for many school and civic organizations. These sextets entered the Northern Indiana School Band, Orchestra, Vocal Association solo and ensemble contest and brought honors to K. H. S. because of their fine work. At Christmas, the choruses and sextets combined to present the annual Christmas program for the student body. To add to the holiday spirit, carolers sang through the halls. With the coming of spring, the Concert Club was chosen from the regular chorus members to enter in the NISBOVA chorus contest, Preparing numbers for the Associated Churches' Easter services was the next goal in sight. The May Festival, held during National Music XVeek, highlighted the years work for these hard-working students as they presented , ,- a concert for their parents ' ' ' xi , f To C' and friends. However, the . 25 J final pleasant task was to .-- sing at Baccalaureate. 1 1 ' ' ' The chorus classes, in Eff W o r k i n g and studying, W' T 7 I fm learned to appreciate and like many types of music, and even as the year closes, the halls ring with the echo of students learn- ing the art of harmonizing together. jane Autenrieth and Louise Fisher, two pianists, have added much to the music program of the school as they played for many and various events. jane and Louise received first ratings at the state piano contest. XVith banners flying, the marching band added much to the football games last fall. Before each game, the colors were presented and each school was honored by the band forming its letter and playing its school song. At half-time, the band entertained with marching feats and stories told in music and marching feet. They marched at several parades, the last being the Memorial Day Parade. As each member repeats the Y-Teen pur- pose and goals, she becomes a part of a fellowship of women and girls who strive to build themselves as a person, as a friend to all people, and as a follower of Cod. Each member is invited ' L' '- to participate in leading devotions or music, be in a program, or ' help on some committee. There are projects, too, in which the Y-Teens help others, such as entertaining at the children's Christ- mas party, preparing favors for hospital trays, and giving Thanksgiving baskets to needy families. The meetings them- selves are of a spiritual or educational nature often times pre- sented by guest speakers.
