GUYIVION FIELD The lccys ot the Class ct l954 have been fortunate to work with Pop Guymon. Throughout their high school careers they have played on the athletic field which gained recognition on October lS, l953, when it became known as Guymon Field. This was evidence that the boys of former Kl-IS. classes also prized his triendship and good sportsmanship. At the formal dedication, Mayor Andrew Milnar read the following resolution pre- pared by the City Council: 'Whereas certain land owned by the City of Ken- dallville in the southeast part of said city has been improved and made into an athletic tield is iicvi Without a name, it appears appro- priate that this body gave to said athletic tield a promin- ent and l ca s t i ii g name. Whereas, since Mr. G. O. Guvmon licis always ini- parted the lcest cf sports- manship and citizenship to the boys he has worked with and his influence will be telt lor years to cdiriej Be It Novi Resolved by this common council that the athletic field be given the name ol Guymon Field. G. A. A. The Girls' Athletic Association started the school year with an intensive program. We tirst became acquainted with our new spon- sor, Miss Wade, and then elected otticers. Sports were listed tor each six week period oi the school year. Autumn sports offered were softball, tennis, archery and golf. Winter and spring sports were volley- vall, bowling, basketball, ping pong shuttle- board, and badminton. Modern dance was continued this year, and a stunts and bal- ance group was added to the course. Bonnie Bodenhater, Hannah Haney, and Miss Wade went to the State G.A.A. camp at Delphi, October 5. Our tour projects this year were Soccer Playday, Volleyball Playday, Basketball Clinic and Sweetheart Swirl. The eighth and ninth grade Soccer Playday with Elkhart was held at Guymon Athletic Field, Novem- ber l. This was the first year for soccer in our school. We were pleased with our play- day with Elkhart when each school won a game, ln the Auburn playday Kendallville was represented with eight girls winning Pat Clarke, president Nelda Berkes, vice-president Bonnie Bodenhafer, secretary Lucia Irons, treasurer Hannah Haney, reporter two out ot tour games, Our biggest project was the Basketball Clinic held December 5, Girls and sponsors from sixteen schools journeyed to Kendallville to attend this dis- trict playday. Not only did they learn about basketball, timing and scoring, but also about shutileboard, badminton and ping pong. Now that our school is a member of the state league, some girls have earned their pins and state cards while others worked to meet the requirements for the state award ol a wall plaque by passing written and skill tests. This year Mary Forker, Marjorie Forker, Bonnie Bodenhater, Pat Clarke, Hannah Haney, and Pat Wymer received numerals for earning 150 points each. Those who received letters tor earning 250 points were Bonnie Bodenhater, Marjorie Forker, and Mary Forker. The girls who contributed their time to one particular sport as sportsheads were Marjorie Forker, Mary Forker, Pat Wymer, Hannah Haney, Marcia Ruderman, Bonnie Bodenhater, Ioyce Watson, Nelda Berkes, and Lucia Irons. Miss Erninger and Mr. Grimes assisted with business arrange- ments. The first act opens with Katrin reading from her diary. Mama and Papa are pre- paring to call the children for the counting of the money from Papa's weekly pay envelope. As the children appear, we meet Nels, the oldest child and the only boy in the family who wishes to be a doctor, Ka- trin, the oldest girl, whose desire it is to be an author, Christine, next youngest who finds pleasure in just helping Mama, and Dagmar, the baby, whose time is spent en- tertaining her kitten, Uncle Elizabeth. As the act progresses, we meet the three aunts and find the conversation revolving about Trina's wish to marry Mr. Thorkelson, the funeral director. The decision is finally put up to Uncle Chris. The second act finds us in the hospital corridor with Mama and Katrin waiting to find out the results oi an operation on Dag- mar's ear. Before long all of the aunts ap- pear plus Mr. Thorkelson and Uncle Chris until the commotion is so great that the nurse requests them to leave. Mama is told that she can not see Dagmar until the next day but, nevertheless, she thinks of a wayg and before the hour is over we know that Dagmar is fine. In the third act Katrin is preparing to graduate from high school and the conver- sation is about her graduation present. Ka- trin is sure that she will get the dresser set in Schiller's drug store and loses no time in making this clear to all concerned, but it is Christine who tells her that Mama had to sell her very own brooch to buy it. Katrin gives up the set and is rewarded with Ma- ma's brooch and her first grown-up cup of coffee. Bad news arrives in the torm of a telegram from lessie, Uncle Chris's house- keeper, saying that he is going to die. Since Mama has always been his favorite, she prepares to leave to see him. For one week in Tune they met with 700 other girls from all over the state on the campus of lndiana Univer- sity to learr. about the functioning of the indiana state government. The mythical state of Girls' State was divided into five counties and nineteen cities. Every girl could run for an office either lccal, county, or state. The more posters she had and the more friends she made, the bet- ter her chances were to win. Local officials were elected in the primary elections, At the same time campaigning for state officials between the two parties, Nationalists and Federalists, became more intense. For the big general election, electric voting mae chines were used. The Nationalists won, the remaining two days were spent in the actual carrying out of duties. Through these valuable experiences at Girls' State better understanding of govern- ment in action was gained. Marilyn Seagly Sarah Tritch Karen Emerson Herman Davis, Victor Platner, and Ross Kurtz were delegates to Hoosier Boys' State at the School for the Deaf in lndianapolis. With 4lf5 boys they learned the fundament- al principles of government in classes taught by competent instructors. After classes were over the big election process began. They elected precinct, city, county and state officers. Vigorous campaigning preceeded the election, at which time the voting was done on electric voting ma- chines. With all the offices filled, the Hoosier ltoys took over the functions of all branches of our state government, Other activities and programs included a complete athletic program, band, chorus, speech and journalism classes, law and police schools, and talent shows. At morn- ing and evening assemblies each day there were interesting speakers from the govern- ment, business, and entertainment fields. ln addition to gaining a better knowledge of our government, the boys formed lasting friendships at Boys' State.
