This newest wing will provide 8 classrooms and a gymnasium. Certain remodeling within the present building will make available two additional classrooms. It is hoped that these much needed rooms will be in use by September of 1957. VVhile this construction is basically physical, it also affects us socially. We are providing better facilities for the education of the youth of our community. As a result K. C. S. will continue to graduate well-informed, responsible citizens who appreciate the American way of life and are willing to work and sacrifice to perpetuate our democratic society. Since we believe that the process of educating our youth is after all a form of construction and we recognize the importance of the addition to the entire student body, we have selected construction as the theme of our yearbook. In january 1957 she took a leave of absence from her teaching duties. Mrs. Clow took her teaching seriously. She introduced us to the attitudes that we would encounter in later life and prepared us for the possibility of a college education. She treated us much like the grown-ups we will soon be. She went out of her way to help organizations and officers to do their jobs. In sincere appreciation for all that she has done for us, we, the students of Kendall Central School, gratefully dedi- cate this, the 1957 Troulmdour, to Mrs. Alida Clow. 7, 0 C 1 1 I 1 u' .1 SS PLAN TODAY 'W W BU 'l.D FOR ToMoRRovv . Lapham STUDENT COUNCIL Better citizenship through. better leaders Theme of the Nineteenth Annual National Conference of Student Councils The K. C. S. Student Council is one of our most active organizations. Each year during its short existence the Council has proven itself an outstanding activity, and this year was no exception. For a second time the Student Council took on the job of supervising the taking of individual pictures of the entire student body. This is done every two years to give parents a chance to secure inexpensive pictures of their children. The school also receives a picture for each child's guidance folder. ln undertaking this work thc council served the school and at the same time enriched its treasury. In recognition of our varsity basketball team's becoming the undefeated league champion this year, the Council presented the players, the manager, and the coach with blue and white jackets and emblems signifying their achievement. lt is hoped that in the future the Council will continue to make awards for outstanding athletic achievement. During the year the council members participated in numerous other activities. They helped the Honor Society with the publication of a school handbook, organized an audio-visual club, made their annual scholastic award to a deserving senior, and assumed the responsibility for publishing the Troulmdour. During the basketball season the Council sold K. C. S. buttons at the games, treated team members to a Rochester Royals game, and at the close of the season prepared a free supper for team members before the sectional game with Naples. The second week of April found Council members busy supervising the election of new officers to carry on the Councils traditions of leadership in student activities and service to the school. The officers for this year were as follows: President - Charles Bolton: Vice- President - David Rathg Secretary - Patricia Seaman, and Treasurer - Harold Passineau. Each grade, seven through twelve, has at least two representatives. These are chosen at the beginning of the school year. Other representatives this year were: Larry Bergevin - Juniorg Betty Bolton, Bret Hardenbrook - Sophomoresq Mary Iewsbury, David Suhr - Freshmeng Sharon Lapham, Donald Diltz - Eighthg and Richard Behnke, Larry VVeed, Seventh. - . Thomas Heywood During the eleven years since its organization the Mask and Vtfig Club has tried hard to achieve a number of objectives. Club members have acquired ex- perience not only in acting but also in the many other phases of play production. The Club has also tried to more adequately equip the school stage and to provide makeup, sound effects, wigs, and costumes for school dramatic productions. Through its activities the Club has offered a welcome diversion from the regular routine of school. ' On Friday evening, March 29, the Club presented its annual dramatic presenta- tion to the public. The first of the three one-act plays was Drop Dead . This was directed by Mr. Frank Clow. The cast of Drop Dead included Patricia Seaman, Robert Sally, Alfred Bruce, Nancy Hawthorne, Jack Harvey, and Geraldine Bruce. For the play which she directed Miss Reta Dolan selected Bright ls Tomorrow . The all-girl cast included Sarah Anderson, Elsa Keberle, Sheryl Preston, Dorthanne Smith, and Joyce Maartense. T he final play of the evening, One Happy Family . was directed by Mr. Arthur Rowley. This cast included llse Schippmann, Iames Rayburn, Harold Passineau, Edward Ellis, Beverly Spring, Penelope Graupman, Beulah l-leise, and Stephen Seaman. All members of the club participated in some phase of the production of the plays. This years officers were Harold Passineau - President, Charles Bolton - Senior Vice-President, Elsa Keberle - Iunior Vice-President, Ilse Schippmann - Sophomore Vice-President, Ann VVelch - Secretary, and Judy Iurhs - FTreasurer. Smith PRESS CLUB All the news tlmt's fit to print Adolph Ochs The Press Club, the eldest of Kendall Central School's extra-curricular groups, was organized in 1938, and next year the club will celebrate the twentieth birthday of the Hi-Lights. During the years from infancy to adulthood many changes have taken place not only in the form but also in the special features to be found in our school newspaper. Some of the more recent innovations are the Crapevine, the reprinting of old features, puzzles, and art work. Last year the Press Club received the Times-Union. - Democrat and Chronicle award for the most outstanding school publication in the greater Rochester area. ' During the year the club published six editions of the Hi-Lights. Each issue sells for five cent a copy, and the money realized is used to purchase supplies for future editions. Throughout this school year Patricia Seaman was Chief Editor, Iames Rayburn, Assistant Editor. They were assisted in the publication of the Hi-Lights by an able staff: Nancy Hawthorne - Make-up Editorg Judy Iurhs - Typing Editorg Sheryl Preston - Exchange Editor, Betty Bolton - Art Editorg and Lawrence Ioba - Production Editor. Violet Williams was treasurer, and Dolores Dusett was in charge of sales. The cluh was advised by Miss Reta Dolan and Miss Irene Eldred. . Y., First Row: N. Williams, B. Heise, D. Heise, J. During the soccer season the club sold refreshments at the home games, and just prior to Christmas the club sold mints and peanut brittlet Both activities proved to be financially profitable enterprises and were aimed at 'achieving the basic purpose of the club - to promote competent and progressive business leadership. In April the club concluded the activities of the year with a field trip to the Rochester Business Institute. Here they took a tour of the school. This proved very interesting to these business majors, many of whom plan to attend the Institute after they graduate from Kendall Central School. This year the activities of the club were directed by Penelope Craupman - President, Ruth Swanger - Vice-President, Iucly Iurhs - Secretary, Beverly Lav- ender - Treasurer, and Miss Irene Eldred - Faculty Advisor.- I J 7 . all L . At Christmas time the girls made favors for the Brockport Hospital, and 'on january twelfth they took a field trip to Buffalo State Teachers College. Here they toured the classrooms and visited the college's model home. Their guides for the tour were college Freshmen girls who, are majoring in home economics. On April 8 the junior and senior girls waited on tables at thc Future Farmers of America ban- quet. Latcr in the month the boys returned the favor. The girls also took turns selling refreshments at the baseball games and held a successful bake food sale. The Mother and Daughter banquet on April 29 was the social event of thc year for the girls. Upon her arrival each mother was presented with a corsage by her daughter. Following a deliciousdinner the guests were entertained by a variety program put on by the girls. First Row: P. Harris, E. Mr. William Diedrich is faculty advisor. Four members of the Kendall Chapter represented the Niagara-Orleans County F. F. A. group in judging contests at the New York State Fair at Syracuse: George Morey who was a member of the vegetable crops judging team, George I-leidemann who was a member of the field and forage crops teamg Alfred Bruce and Charles Bolton who comprised the poultry judging team. During this year George Heidemann served as Vice-President of the Niagara- Orleans County F. F. A. group. Alfred Bruce and Charles Bolton were the delegates from the local chapter to the County group meetings. Refreshment sales from home basketball games brought in revenue which enabled the members to hold the annual Father and Son Banquet, to attend a Cornell football game and a Rochester American hockey game, and to join the Future Home- makers of America for their annual picnic. As a result of much practice in the correct use of parliamentary procedure in meetings, the officers and four members of the Kendall Chapter won the Bi-County Chapter Meeting Contest, thereby becoming eligible to compete in the District Contest. Following this contest the boys demonstrated their skill at a Grange Neigh- bor's Night at Gaines and at an assembly program for the Kendall high school. Alsoithis year George I-leidemann and Alfred Bruce had outstanding programs of supervised farming which enabled them to apply for the degree of Empire Farmer, the highest F. F. A. degree in the state. 4 First Row: R. Wentworth, F. Cliff, D. Smith, R. Swonger, J. Bowers, B. Heise, M. Levondowski Second Row: J. DeIIaCosfa, l. Schippmcnn, S. Seaman, Mrs. Brehse, G. Bruce, S. They go forward through service constructing a better world in which to live. The group is affiliated with the American Red Cross and through it with the International Red Cross. Each year the Kendall unit, an affiliate of the Albion Chapter of the American Red Cross, sends a chest of school equipment, athletic supplies, and personal grooming articles overseas. This chest is a gift from the students of Kendall Central School to needy students in some foreign country. On special holidays the Junior Red Cross members make favors for the veterans hospital in Batavia and for the nursing homes in Kendall. During this past summer Sue Seaman and Geraldine Bruce attended a twoday meeting in Buffalo for representatives from nearby districts. At this meeting they participated with students from other schools in a discussion of how to improve the Red Cross. The Junior Red Cross earns the money to finance its projects by selling school supplies during the noon hour. The Council also operates a student loan fund from which students may borrow money for worthwhile projects. The Council membership is composed of two representatives from each of the grades 7-12. The officers for this year were: Ruth Swanger - Presidentg Dorthanne Smith - Secretaryg and Jean Bowers - Treasurer. Mrs. Ardeen Brehse is faculty advisor. ,-3-1+.x A SPORTS MISCELLANEA Sports miscellanea include the extra-curricular sports activities in which students participate on a voluntary basis. A varied program for both boys and girls is offered each year. Among the sports included are soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, softball, speedball, touch football, horseshoes, track and field events, tumbling, apparatus, and trampoline, and wrestling. The program varies according to the time of year and the age and sex of the groups involved. Such a program develops sportsmanship, team-play, cooperation, and interest in sports on the pilrt of those students who are not able to participate in varsity sports. This year the high school girls' intramural program consisted of volleyball, basketball, tumbling, soccer, and softball. Last fall a trampoline was added to the equipment of the physical education department, and both girls and boys intra- mural groups have been enthusiastic users of the new equipment. As usual the Cirl's Athletic Association assisted with the grade gym classes, and on two occasions the girls attended play days at Holley. The first time they played volleyballg the second, basketball. The C. A. A. elected the following officers: President - Nancy Hawthorneg Secretary - Ann Welchg and Treasurer - Violet Yvilliams. This year the boys intramural group was quite active. ln the Class C, Section 5 division Kendall had five wrestling champions: Ted Halstead, Alan Schickler, joseph Tauschek, Norman Hughes, and Charles Bolton. The boys also participated in the VVinter Sports Carnival which was held in Elba. On the volleyball team were Charles Bolton, Charles Rath, Jack Harvey, Alfred Bruce, Melvin Schultz, Larry Klafehn, Norman Hughes, and Larry Bergevin. Melvin Schultz and Larry Bergevin represented Kendall in ping pong, Alfred Bruce, James Rayburn, and Jack Harvey competed in the badminton tournament. Although Kendall had no winners, the boys did their best and enjoyed the experience. First Row: T. Halstead, J. Suhr, J. Tauschek, C. Bolton, Mr. Kemp, A. Bruce, G. Curtis, J. Harvey, L. Fetterly, D. Thompson SOCCER This year the K. C. S. soccer team had another successful season. Unfortunately, however, the local team was defeated by Wolcott in the play-offs for the Section 5 State Championship awards. The defeat in the playroffs was the result of a number of handicaps which the team encountered during the year. I-Iowever, the boys were not discouraged and are looking ahead to a more successful season next year. Suhr CLASS GF i958 The first project for the Juniors this year was the junior Prom which was held on October 26. l-lallowe'en was chosen as the theme for the decorations. and music for round and square dancing was furnished by the Glenn Marshall orchestra. Although the Prom was not a great financial success, the juniors regarded it as one of the best social events of the year. ln january the juniors presented a movie. The Glenn Miller Story , starring james Stewart and Iune Allyson. This netted a profit of S75. This year, for the first time, the junior Class put on a Fish Supper in March. In past years this had been a Senior project. l-lowever. it was felt that in order to lighten the load of money-making activities of the senior year, the usual supper should be held during the junior year. The class worked hard on their supper, and their profit of S200 filled a void in their treasury. The last social event of the season will be the Junior-Senior picnic in june. Plans for this have not yet been made. The class elected the following officers: President Sidney Strasenburgh. Vice- President Elsa Keberle, Treasurer Judy jurhs, and Secretary Kathleen Nowacli. Larry Bergevin and David Rath represented the class on the Student Councilg Chris- tine Seifert and Joe Tauschek, on the junior Red Cross. Mrs. Traber is class advisor. Elsa Keberle and George Heidemann were chosen to represent the Iunior Class at the Citizenship Education Conference in Syracuse on April 27. First Row: D. Harvey, A. Welch, l. Schippmann, P. Ruef, B. The repre- sentatives to the Student Council were Bret Hardenbroolt and Betty lane Bolton: the junior Bed Cross Council representatives, Geraldine Bruce and Ilse Schippmann. The class advisor is Mr. Cross. ln March the Sophomores held a movie. Custer made his last stand in thc school gym as the class presented Chief Crazy Horse starring Victor Mature. A profit of S38 was made. ' A record hop which was held on May 10th with Joe Dean, a Rochester disc jockey, as master of ceremonies, was the highlight of the year. loe Dean played the popular records of the day for dancing and gave away a number of record albums during the evening. The dance was a great successg a well-known personality had visited Kendall. P ,.J 1 Q ' 1 T , fl 1' . lu V r ,I A L nj L1 I 0,1 . Ll EDJ!
