I 959 Gyvrs The outlook for the 1959 season was termed bright and promising' by Coach Taylor. His forecasts proved correct as the Tigers responded with a record of '7 wins, 2 ties, and 1 loss, coming only 5 extra points short of a perfect season. The Tigers opened the season by playing AA Pamlico at James Kenan's fine new field, which was made possible by the great efforts of the J. K, Boosters Club, The power of the Tigers proved too much for the Hurricanes as they rolled to a 34 to 7 victory. Displaying a great team effort, the following week, the Tigers knocked off AAA Massey Hill for their second win of the season. They were then upset by a fired-up Swansboro team and came out with a 12 to 12 tie. Against a tough Richlands team, the Tigers came out on top by a score of 15 to 0 for their third win of the year, Facing their arch-rival, W-RH, I. K, tasted defeat for the only time of the season by dropping a 20 to 18 decision to them. Playing before a large Homecoming crowd, the Tigers rolled over out-classed Burgaw by a score of 39 to 0 with the second and third teams play- ing most of the way. The same was true the next week as the Tigers defeated Roseboro 39 to 7. The team then went down to North Duplin and quieted a Rebel team which had not been scored on in the conference by a score of 20 to O, ln the game of the year, played before an overflow crowd at the I, K. field, the Tigers tied Mt. Olive, ranked number 1 in the state, 6 to 6. I. K, ended its season with a 25 to O victory over Beulaville, falling short of the con- ference championship by -Q game, 1.
