The Seniors Our Leaders County Superintendent - MR, O, P, JOHNSON Robert E, Lee was held in such reverence and esteem after the Civil War that people looked upon him with unusual veneration. Parents brought their children to him that they might be able to say in later life that they had seen the great general,scho1ar, and educator. One mother asked him to bless her child. whereupon, he placed his hand on the child's head and said, Teach him to deny himself, My challenge to each individual member of the Class of 1960 is to leam to deny yourself, We are little more than animals until we leam this lesson, and you cannot develop the greatness there is within you until you have learned to do this. Today we live in a great age and in a great country, Much progress has been made in many areas of life, This progress did not just happen. Vision, thinking, plan- ning, and toil, in a large measure, have caused lt to come about. We have a great heritage, Let us hold fast to the best of the past. Let us add to this the best of to- day. Let us work and have faith in ourselves, our neigh- bor, and our God. Congratulations on producing a very fine annual. His forecasts proved correct as the Tigers responded with a record of '7 wins, 2 ties, and 1 loss, coming only 5 extra points short of a perfect season. The Tigers opened the season by playing AA Pamlico at James Kenan's fine new field, which was made possible by the great efforts of the J. K, Boosters Club, The power of the Tigers proved too much for the Hurricanes as they rolled to a 34 to 7 victory. Displaying a great team effort, the following week, the Tigers knocked off AAA Massey Hill for their second win of the season. They were then upset by a fired-up Swansboro team and came out with a 12 to 12 tie. Against a tough Richlands team, the Tigers came out on top by a score of 15 to 0 for their third win of the year, Facing their arch-rival, W-RH, I. K, tasted defeat for the only time of the season by dropping a 20 to 18 decision to them. Playing before a large Homecoming crowd, the Tigers rolled over out-classed Burgaw by a score of 39 to 0 with the second and third teams play- ing most of the way. The same was true the next week as the Tigers defeated Roseboro 39 to 7. The team then went down to North Duplin and quieted a Rebel team which had not been scored on in the conference by a score of 20 to O, ln the game of the year, played before an overflow crowd at the I, K. field, the Tigers tied Mt. Olive, ranked number 1 in the state, 6 to 6. I. K, ended its season with a 25 to O victory over Beulaville, falling short of the con- ference championship by -Q game, 1. We are deeply grateful, and though we can only say thanks, it comes from the bottom of our hearts. We all know how hard the job has been, but we are proud of our field and of you and all the others who have made possible this fine field we are playing on tonight. Our hats are off to a man who is a little better than his word, a little more liberal than his promise, a little larger in deed than he is in speech. Thanks, Mr. Godwin. The 1959 Football Team James Kenan High School Letter and trophy presented to Mr. Godwin by 1,959 Football team. Having a good time?
