HISTORY OF THE CRUISE KEMPER COUNTY departed for the Western Pacific on O6 June 1968 to serve as a unit of the SEVENTH Fleet Amphibious Force. Her transit load consisted of thirty-four NI-54 USMC trucks, thriteen disbursing safes, and six USMC personnel. Following a brief upkeep in Guam, KEMPER COUNTY reported for duty to NSA DANANG on 25 July. Offloading her transit cargo the same day, she was promptly utilized in a series of shuttle runs between DANANG, CUA VIET, and TAN MY. During this thirty-three day assignment, KEMPER COUNTY made eighteen beachings in direct support of the Northern l Corps Naval, Marine, and Army ground forces. KEMPER received her first of two upkeep periods from SRF SUBIC from 30 AUG through 13 Sep 1968. KEMPER was selected for an unusual assignment to COMUSMACV under the direct scheduling control of COMSTS Vietnam. This assignment, lasting from 16 SEP to 05 NOV was solely for the support of U.S. Army units located throughout the delta. Four times KEMPER penetrated the waters of the Mekong Delta, including three trips to Saigon, and one trip fifty miles up the Bassac River to Can Tho. On 02 NOV. she played a significant part in the movement of the First Air Cavalry from the l Corps to Saigon. Beaching at Tan My, the ship was fully loaded with munitions, tanks, trucks, support vehicles, and 85 Army soildiers. The four day trip provided rest and relaxation for the battle- weary troops. After two extensions on assignment, KEMPER spent five days R 8: R in Hong Kong, and ten days upkeep in Subic Bay prior to returning to NSA DANANG on 04 DECEMBER. Although this final assignment lasted seven days, only one additional beaching was made due to a lack of staged cargo in DANANG. KEMPER COUNTY departed on 12 DEC in company with USS ST. CLAIR COUNTY QLTS 10965, for Yokosuka, Japan and the return trip home. KEMPER COUNTY returned to San Diego on 30 JAN 1969. During the deployment she steamed more than 23,000 nautical miles, carried more than 12,000 short tons of cargo, and saw action in all four corps tactical zones. KEMPliR's onboard complement at the close of the year was nine officers and seventy-five enlisted men.
