DE DI CA TI ON A sailor is blessed with many different kinds of love There is the love he holds for his parents, brothers and sisters, the love he holds for his wife and children who must endure painful sep irations the love he holds for his God and lastly the unique love he holds for his ship . Ships ire thought of by many as inert steel xx elded ind riveted to form a durable unit to withstand sea and wind or a metil envelope to house propulsion machinery and electronics equipment or simply is a means of transportation for ocean and sea river and lake. To a sailor a ship becomes many things- 1 teacher 1 protector a home away from home and a profound influence in his life. Is it any wonder that a ship is personified in the minds of those who man her? Naval ships possess varied ind individu il personalities The Battleship is a tigress bristling with tooth and claw and not to be t iken lightly Her little sisters the Cruiser and Destroyer with their speed and agility hover protectingly around her The Aircraft C irrier is a virtual giant among ships with her crew of thous inds md her awesome power deliverable over great distances. The submarine becomes an ever-present sentinel completing lonely solitary patrols in the role of deterrent. Her transit load consisted of thirty-four NI-54 USMC trucks, thriteen disbursing safes, and six USMC personnel. Following a brief upkeep in Guam, KEMPER COUNTY reported for duty to NSA DANANG on 25 July. Offloading her transit cargo the same day, she was promptly utilized in a series of shuttle runs between DANANG, CUA VIET, and TAN MY. During this thirty-three day assignment, KEMPER COUNTY made eighteen beachings in direct support of the Northern l Corps Naval, Marine, and Army ground forces. KEMPER received her first of two upkeep periods from SRF SUBIC from 30 AUG through 13 Sep 1968. KEMPER was selected for an unusual assignment to COMUSMACV under the direct scheduling control of COMSTS Vietnam. This assignment, lasting from 16 SEP to 05 NOV was solely for the support of U.S. Army units located throughout the delta. Four times KEMPER penetrated the waters of the Mekong Delta, including three trips to Saigon, and one trip fifty miles up the Bassac River to Can Tho. On 02 NOV. she played a significant part in the movement of the First Air Cavalry from the l Corps to Saigon. Beaching at Tan My, the ship was fully loaded with munitions, tanks, trucks, support vehicles, and 85 Army soildiers. The four day trip provided rest and relaxation for the battle- weary troops. After two extensions on assignment, KEMPER spent five days R 8: R in Hong Kong, and ten days upkeep in Subic Bay prior to returning to NSA DANANG on 04 DECEMBER. Although this final assignment lasted seven days, only one additional beaching was made due to a lack of staged cargo in DANANG. KEMPER COUNTY departed on 12 DEC in company with USS ST. CLAIR COUNTY QLTS 10965, for Yokosuka, Japan and the return trip home. KEMPER COUNTY returned to San Diego on 30 JAN 1969. During the deployment she steamed more than 23,000 nautical miles, carried more than 12,000 short tons of cargo, and saw action in all four corps tactical zones. KEMPliR's onboard complement at the close of the year was nine officers and seventy-five enlisted men. Q 1 ' ',s- 1-- Lg. -': L'-::: L , ..,QJf--'---A-' 'ft 7-7 3'3f'Q.f' .,. ,, 1+- !.!.' Preservation of the entire external structure above the water- line, as well as the cavernous tank deck is only part of the responsibility of deck divis- ion, for it is the deck apes who stand the important watches as lookout, helmsman, lee helmsman, quartermaster, hoatswain mate of the watch, officer of the deck inport, and in some instances, Junior officer of the deck underway. In addition it is the respon- sibility of deck to see that vital cargo is loaded and offloaded swiftly and safely. . . that the ship is safely beached, no matter how strong the current. ENGINEERING DEPAR TMENT During the eight month deployment to WESTPAC, the Engineering Department has successfully fulfilled the monumentous task of keeping the Grand Old K.C. in running Condition. With a shortage of men and a rapid turnover in the department, many young petty officers soon found they had full responsibility for their divisions. It was the ability of all hands to rapidly assume large responsibilities of engineering watches and rapidly absorb vast amounts of technical information that enabled this department to handle the preventative maintenance and major engineering casualties that occurred. Efficiency and profession- alism were the earmark of their work. A well done to the hardest working department on the ship. 4 v L aa- 'fm 5h1pQ lcuuru f' 'Q M A .
