Dancing, swimming and other interesting things made up our program for the day. The usual senior class happenings occurred during the end of the year, such as the senior banquet, senior ball, class night and last, but not least, Commencement exer- cises, which all proved to be both happy and sad affairs: happy because of the thought that we are graduating and sad because of the fact that we are leaving dear old KHS. The banquet, and senior ball were on May 22, class night the 24th and Commencement l di lt Ni I 2 I , exercises on the 26th. Our beautiful class song, Now is the Hour, is a song that shall live in our mem ories and be a reminder of dear old KHS. In conclusion, we wish all up-and-coming seniors the best of luck. --ui-5 - . 4.- fv J K ,,f,.QfX-f' N'-:WW i,i- A X U 'I .Nw - 1 I' , 9 15- ' e' C g M V - - , .,..t... JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY We have now endured our last moments as underclassmen and can look back on the pleasant times spent as such. The class of '49 started off in their freshman year in such a manner that they left no doubt in anyone's mind that they would be one of the most outstanding classes in Kemmerer high school. At first there was a battle with the upperclassmen to see if we would stay in junior high or advance to high school, but after a long, hard struggle we became full-fledged students. The job of white-washing and lighting the K before the homecoming game, fell to the fresh- men that year. The freshman hop with its Christmas tree theme, was a great success. Ending the year with a picnic, we trundled off to summer vacation. ln our sophomore year we met with the juniors in initiation. We came out with memories of lipstick, paddles, costumes, humiliation and thoughts of revenge running through our minds. Then came the sophomore ball with the theme of Harvest Time. lt turned out to be quite a struggle to get the sophomore boys to obtain dates for the affair. To end the year properly, the class of '49 put on a picnic and invited the high school. In our junior year, revenge was ours-Initiation! With thoughts of last year's initiation still fresh in our minds, we really poured it on the poor sophomores. After that is was the junior-senior party put on by the students at the club house. As it was in honor of the juniors, it was well attended. A social event of the year was the junior prom with Marilyn Head chosen as queen. It was a beautiful affair and one to be re- membered. One of our final acts as underclassmen was to throw a junior-senior party in honor of the seniors. Now, with eleven years of school behind us, we have the final and most import- ant year ahead of us, the year when 'the class of '49 becomes seniors. Surprisingly enough, we survived this 1n1- tiation with less humiliation than was expected. After this we settled down to earn money and prepare ourselves for the sopho- more ball which, being at the close of the football season, portrayed a football field. This turned out to be a great success even though we decorated it in only nine hours. Instead of the good old Democrats and Republicans, the sophs have come out with two new parties!-the boys vs. the girls. These politics really give life to our class meetings. This situation gave us a chance to become used to the Kemmerer high little by little, instead of put- ting us in a completely new wonderland. It also gave us the chance to be the superiors to the two lower junior high grades and have the student body president of Kemmerer junior high chosen from our class. Vern Hansen was chosen president for the first half of the school year and for the second half, Joe Kalister had the honor of being president. This was a student council for the junior high only. We had very few parties, but they were greatly enjoyed. Class officers were: First Semester: Second Semester: President-Stewart Orgill. President-Lucille Mrazek. Vice President-Benjie McPhie. Vice PresidentgMaurice Roberts. Secretary-Treasurer-Sherman Roberts. Secretary-Treasurer-.leanne Beutler. Representatives-Willard Chipp and Representatives-Joyce Koci and Joe Kalister. Joe Deromedis. EIGHTH GRADE CLASS HISTORY The peppy eighth grade class started off into full swing with a Hallowe'en party held in the fall month of October. The first Saturday in April, the eighth grade girls from their sponsor, Mr. Pratt's history class, sponsored a very successful Leap Year dance for the junior high students and sponsors. lt was decided twithout the consent of the student council? for the girls of the eighth grade class each year to sponsor a dance the first Saturday in April The last and final dancing party was held in April at the Legion hall with a large attendance The eighth graders being freshmen next fall will diligently deter mine to become one of the more prnileged classes in high school They are a swell bunch of kids going out after what they want thus proving they will do even more ln their high school years yet to come Best of luck in everything you undertake Their class officers were First Semester Second Semester President Raymond Martin President-Carla Schow Vice President-Jerry Daneluke Vice President Shirley Ellsworth Secretary Dona Rae Rasmussen Secretary Treasurer Teddy Wright Treasurer-Carla Schow SEVENTH GRADE CLASS HISTORY The seventh grade pupils were met with a new and different style of classes than they had been confronted with in their earlier grades Many wide eyed expres sions were on the faces of the pupils upon finding the elimination of recesses which they had enjoyed in the lower grades In February the pupils gave a bake sale to raise money for a dance which was given the first of April The dance sponsored by Miss Cox, was their first date dance of the year .ff f' '--.A 5 5 3 We-vt...-s. Beginning with the football season the organization worked hard to perfect for- mations performed at half-time during all home games and at the Green River and Evanston games. This was the beginning of the marching band that eventually ended with a Superior-plus rating in marching at the Kemmerer District Music Festival. A smaller pep band played at all home basketball games and journeyed to Green River to give support to a hotly contested basketball tussle. The close of the basketball season ushered in the serious rehearsal of concert music and the selection of the concert band and music to be used for festivals. Many extra hours of practice, both morning and evening, were necessary to bring the band to a peak which culmin- ated in ratings of Superior, both at the district in Kemmerer and the sub-regional na- tional festivals at Casper. Much credit is due the entire band membership for their sus- tained efforts during the year in bringing the band to its present level, when it is re- membered that fourteen were lost by graduation last year. The band has been under the direction of James Mackay for the past three years and had this to say when asked about the band: This ye:ir's band was the best balanced and the most enthusiastic of :ill the three yearn. As early as March of this year, I was sure we had a good band and my belief was justified at Casper. Musically speaking, this was a happy year for meg I am proud to have been your director- and thanks. The following ratings were awarded to band instrumentalists at the Kemmerer and Casper sub-regional music festivals: Tenor Sax Solo-Glenn Williams-Superior, Excellent. Cornet Solo-Tommy Potter-Excellent, Excellent. Trombone Solo Al Gilchrist Superior, Excellent Baritone Solo Al Gilchrist Excellent Tuba Solo Dick Thornock Superior, Excellent Brass Sextette Tommy Potter Robert Beutler, Calvin Hunter Al Gilchrist Betty Thornock Dick Thornock Superior Good A I' N 0114519 ,AS U tw S414 A152 'di rc G, r .gg 00 -Aff 4:36,-.,,.-ff f, ,,,,,.:,,,f QZJ' wk A I-W Naam , as sg '-- :77 dsx X M I vw. ,, W Ma 2+ 'nf ' 3 . . . t 1 ,f fi . . . i 1 T .1 . . The organization is divided into two groupse-the A group, which consists of all the active members and the B group. which is made up of all the semi-active mem- bers. Under the capable leadership of Miss Cox, the Quirt club was fully organized for all games and the group made a striking appearance at all home football and basket- ball games. The Quirt club members also made several trips to surrounding towns to cheer the Rangers in their encounters against opposing teams. Six cheerleaders were chosen by a committee of teachers and students and in their white. snappy outfits, led the organization during all the games and made a fine appearance when presenting new yells and doing different stunts. The cheerleaders were: Jerry Willoughby, Georgia Goldberg, Peggy Alleman, Gloria Lumbert, Marianne Anelli and Josephine Munari. The uniform for members was a black skirt, white blouse and a red coat sweater. All the senior members of the Quirt club were presented with a letter K with the Ranger emblem on it to wear on their sweaters. The officers of the organization for the 1947-48 season were: President, Chiyoko Tanaka: vice president, Beverly Gregoryg secretary, LaRae Bigler and treasurer, Jean Smith. LARIAT CLUB With Miss Gerry Cox as their sponsor, the junior high school girls organized a pep club to cheer their Cowboys through all of their home athletic games. All of the girls in the junior high are eligible for membership and at this time, the club consists of almost every girl in the junior high school. The members are known as the Pepiteers. Dressed in their uniforms of green and white, the organization made a notice- able appearance at all of the games. The organization was led by nine cheerleaders-- three from each grade--who always presented a fine attraction at all the games by do- ing many acrobatic stunts in their cheerleading The Lariat club has proven to be one of the most peppy units in the Kemmerer schools They hase always backed the Quirt club and made it possible for a larger and stronger cheering section HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS Owing to class schedule difficulties the high school girls chorus did not have a sufficient number of members for the usual actn ities performed by this group how ever with the assistance of fiye boys two amusing operettas were given Lady Fran ces and Mountain Music Both were highly successful and afforded the chorus mem bers much pleasure For the district music festival the group sang Calm Be Thy Sleep and Celtic Lullaby assisted by a few girls from the junior high chorus A rat ing of Excellent LDIYISIOH lll was receix ed at the Kemmerer festival which consider ing there were only two rehearsals a week was indeed remarkable Patings awarded KHS xocalists were as follows Soprano Solo-Carol Dawn Anderson Excellent Excellent Soprano Solo Georgia May Goldberg Excellent Excellent Vlezzo Solo-Donna Whiston Excellent Mezzo Solo-Charmaine Fagnant Superior Excellent Alto Solo Betty May Kirkwood Superior Alto Solo Betty Glagouch Superior Excellent Alto Solo Lois Harris Super1or Superior Tenor Solo Robert Bcutler Excellent Baritone Solo Dick Thornock Superior Excellent Girls Trio-Onyx Smith Delores Bertagnolli Jeanne Beutler Excellent Girls Trio Donna Whiston Charmaine Fagnant Betty May Kirk wood Superior Excellent Girls Trio-Carol Dawn Anderson Georgia May Goldberg Lois Harris Excellent Superior Girls Sextette-Carol Dawn Anderson Onyx Smith Georgia May Goldberg Yanetta Beachler Betty Glagovich Lois Harris Superior Excellent Mixed Octette Onyx Smith Georgie May Goldberg Betty Glago wich Lois Harris Robert Beutler, Al Gilchrist Tommy Potter Don Hansen Superior Excellent lThc aboye ratings are for Kemmerer and Casper festiyals in that order? ,,,,.-Z 4 C-4 , j N If i I 4 l x . .lf!.fY5.:f 1:.1.. ,ru I I I I if If' X .III I r' I I .A If 1 n . The Rangers, having had ten lettermen retuming to the squad, proved to be one of the most powerful and deceptive grid squads of high school prep circles of the state. The Ranger eleven played eight games throughout the season, winning six, tying one and losing one. The Rangers met Soda Springs in their first game of the season and beat them handily 20-0. Then the following week-end, the Rangers met the Superior Dragons and downed them 46-0. After such a drubbing the Rangers, very much pleased with them- selves, journeyed to Star Valley, where they met and defeated the Afton Cheesemakers 19-6. The locals next tangled with the Green River Wolves, on Green River soil, where they battled it out' 'to a scoreless tie, 0-0. Undaunted by their tie with the Wolves, the Rangers met the Montpelier Bears and literally swamped them, 46-0. The Rangers then met the state leaders, the Rawlins Outlaws and suffered their first and only de- feat of the season, 14-0. Slightly set back and little the worse for wear after their de- feat by the Outlaws, the Rangers met and conquered the Rock Springs Tigers, 13-6. In their final and traditional Armistice Day game of the season against the powerful Evanston Red Devils, the Rangers were able to boast a victory as they brought home the cowbell. The score, 19-0. At the close of the season, the Rangers had piled up quite an impressive record by placing four men on the All-Conference team: Chubby Legarra, Bryan Archer, Jerry Floyd and Jim Joslin. In addition, there were several mentioned on the second team or to the honorable mention list. Chubby Legarra was chosen as a unanimous selection by most papers to the All-State team. Jim Joslin made the second squad and Jerry Floyd and Bryan Archer were elected on the honorable mention list. Throughout the season the squad played 16 conference games, winning eight and losing eight. In their first game at the district tournament, the locals rnet the Green River Wolves and dropped a thriller, 40-38. Undaunted by their defeat of the day before, the Rangers met and romped the Superior Dragons, 42-34. In the semi-finals for the Con- solation Championship, the Rangers met and dumped the Reliance Pirates, 33-32. Playing the Evanston Red Devils for third and fourth, the Rangers suffered a defeat, 55-46 but retained their last year's fourth place honor. The squad then journeyed to Laramie for the state tournament. where they met the ever-powerful Cheyenne Indians in their first tilt. The game was a thriller with the Indians ending up on the top of a 60-49 score. In their next combat of the hardwood the locals met and stamped out the Lander five, 56-41. ln their third and last game of the tournament, the Rangers met and were defeated by the Laramie Plainsmen, 40-31 thus drawing the tenth place standing of the tournament. At the district tournament, Chubby Legarra was honored by making the All- Tournament team. Then on their trip east to the state tournament, he was named to the All-State honor team by the coaches and officials at the tournament. Chubby was one of the very few of Wyoming prep students to make All-State in two major sports in one year.
