0 E HUNDRED YEAR M., S The theme, One Hundred Years and Today, was chosen because it was in l855 that Chicago's first public high school was built. The Chicago High School was a stately, three story, limestone building. It withstood the ravages of the Chicago Fire in 1871, which claimed 15 other schools, and served as a refuge for the victims of the fire. Chicago's historically conscious citizens regretted that recently it had to be torn down to make way for the Congress Street Highway. Chicago has always been eager to learn and progress to better things. Although some pioneer citizens realized that the way to obtain this was through education, it wasn't until 1883, that an Illinois state law gave every child between 8 and I4 compulsory education, -of not less than 12 weeks a year. Today the school year is 40 weeks and Chicago has 35 general, 4 technical, 7 trade and vocational high schools, and 1 special school for the handicapped. XVe can really be proud of the vast progress Chicago and its educational system have made in the comparatively short span of one hundred years.
