Education forges the master key that opens the door to true happiness. Kelvyn offers four keys that lead to this mastery: Security, Congenial Companionship, Self Expression, and Health. Through these we mature to happy human beings. e We, the graduates of June, 7953, and January, 7954, dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Margaret R. Nordman and Mrs. Frances H. Sachs for their significant but unheralded achievement. Margaret R. Nordman Whatever is worth doing is worth do' ing welI could certainly be the motto of Mrs. Margaret Nordman, sponsor of the school newspaper. Besides the iob of put- ting out an issue of the Panther every two weeks, she presides at and arranges for all assemblies and stimulates the minds of students in her iournalism and social studies classes through her interest- ing lectures. Mrs. Nordman has been teaching at Kelvyn for l5 years and is noted for her ability to do several dif- ferent things at the some time. , X M e Q 1 LWXQM, ICJ AAAJX , ,faA,f, ' f Cfgfdeyf-4 Maw QVLAV Jgvfjq Ti- f .4f47j M Pm ,9mff,f. Frances Sachs, yearbook and Kelyyn Play' ers sponsor, and speech coach. Once a leading lady herself, Nlrs, Sachs, in her years at Kelvyn, has stressed all the good points of drama and speech in her classes and produced many Eno actors, actresses, and orators. She has instructed speakers appearing in school programs and assem- blies in the hne qualities of speech, and ff' each year stars in the production of the Kelvyniun. x Quill and Scroll Society Through the efforts of its sponsors, lVlrs. Nordnran and Mrs, Sachs, a chapter of Quill and Scroll, honorary iournolistic society, was estab- lished at Kelvyn in June, l95Q. 6 1 b A-,I v. KElVYN PARK OFFERS YOUh1VIl?l:E': KEY TO SECURITY , .J ' Qf'lnf thfeAmuItitude of councellors there is safety. -Bible Throughout our youth we depend upon our parents for material and emotional security. The freshman entering school comes gradually to rely upon the faculty for security-he calls on his -teachers for help both in the academic and Social fields. With the kindly assistance of his parents and teachers he prepares for the future, he matures emotionally and mentally. He reaches adulthood with a feeling of belonging-security- which comes not from money and material wealth, but from the love, guidance, and knowl- edge cicquired in the home and school. This was a familiar cry in Kelyyrrs halls when the P,rl',A,. held its monthly tallly apple sale. This year KP. students consumed a grand total of 3,727 apples. The Association conducted tours of liurny Brothers Bakery and the Borden Dairy, organized a small bazaar and the sale of KP. booster buttons: in October they sponsored Turn Back The Clock, a play ofthe roaring 2O's: in Novem- ber in connection with Education Week, they held a bake and apron sale: in lVlay they presented a fashion show at Kelvyn Park Fieldhouse with KP. students modeling. All these activities provided funds for drapes for our library. and for all we thank our l3.rl'.A. mothers most heartily. 'l'hey did not neglect social considerations either. In Ianuary they gave an elaborate tea for the freshman mothers. They helped serve members of the Du Sable Glee Club after the well remembered Brotherhood Assembly: and with the eo-operation of the Student Council they held a clothing drive for the youth of lVlonteliore. All in all the P.T.A., had a very successful year. Page 21 :J KELVYN PARK CFFERS YCJU THE KEY TO CDNG N HL CQMPHNI NSHIP Without friends no one would choose to live even if he had all other goods. -Aristotle In and around Kelvyn's halls we have enioyed good fellowship, have shared our studies and our fun. Among many acquaintances, each of us has found some who are his equals, whose compan- ionship he enjoys, in whom he can conhde and whom he trusts. These few he cherishes as his friends. In the formative years of youth we can make friendships that will endure. As our own personalities are being formed we ind those who are most congenial to us, and we grasp the mean- ing of true friendship, a mature understanding of another human soul. N . To the three of learning there should be added another making it rcadin, ritin, rithmetic. and rhythm, for rhythm has become an important part of our school curriculum. The fine musical education that students in the Bands receive will lead many of them to future jobs in music. But, for the time being, it offers them a great deal of fun and personal satisfaction. After the last echoes of A fade away, Miss L. Frances Fischer raises her baton and the music begins. Songs such as the Merry Men Overture, and Sousa's rousing march, A'Semper Fidelisf' are some of the many types that can be heard in 313 every day during the eighth period. Adding much to the Band are the two new euphoniums recently added to the many instruments already owned by the school. Page 7l KELVYN PARK OFFERS YOU THE KEY TO Happiness depends hrst of all upon health. The Physical Education Department, K Klub, and Girls' Athletic Association are representatives of K.P.'s health program. Our athletic teams foster the spirit of sportsmanship and co-operation. Their record in competition with other city teams is an honorable one. Through various intra-mural activities, instructional films, and hygiene pro- grams Kelvyn stresses the fact that a sound mind stems from a sound body. Every Kelvyn student acquires an understand- ing of the functioning of the human body, and the principles upon which its normal healthful functioning depend. These if put to use through- out his entire life will guide him to a salubrious happy existence. K., N' VM JEL! -Rim-:AWE-. ilanumms.,:'.. A N A -if 3 2 a 1 . . Ng . .T QT' ty. fd. xr... To Taft, Kelvyn lost a heartbreaker. and its first loss of the season. by a score of I4-6. The next game was an entirely different story. The Panthers came from behind two times while going on a scoring rampage. Wzlrren Bouwmans Une quarterbacking and the inspiring defense of the linemen led by George Brauneis. stopped Aniundsen cold. Nuss scored three touchdowns and two extra points. The final score was 26-19. ln this game Donald fleemen, veteran lineman. dislocated his shoulder. They then showed Roosevelt how after an 80 yard kickoff return by Nuss. This was all Kelvyn needed: again the score showed Kelvyn on top I8-6. The Panthers. weak from the loss of lleemen and plagued with injuries, went on to lose to Stein- metz .52-6. Nuss scored the only touchdown which gave him the top spot for scoring in the White Section. Despite this loss, Kelvyn went hopefully into the playoffs against flarrison, but were bowled over to the tune of 48-O. Despite injuries, Kelvyn showed that it was capable of winning the tough ones, and should do the same next year. As Kelvyn's basketball season comes to a halt. we look back at the records of the teams and individual players. The season record for the Varsity was 3 wins and 7 losses. The Frosh- Soph Team duplicated this feat. It was a bad season for both of the Kelvyn quintets, mainly because of the lack of height and that old hindrance to a high school team-reserves. Kelvyn did, however, defeat Manley, Tuley. and Crane. They lost to Wells, Austin, Foreman, Steinmetz, McKinley, and Marshall. Warren Bouw- man was the team's high scorer with l70 points, Bill Colbeck, the team captain. was always in the thick of the fight and near the end of the season began play- ing the kind of ball that inspired the rest of the team. Little Barron was the sparkplug ofthe team. He scored 31 points in the Manley game and was also chosen on the section team in city. Barron and Colbeck. bv the way. were second and third in team scoring: Poopsie had 136. while Willie had l23. Paris, Hartell. Petersen, Zielke. and Parke played good clean ball all season. Mann, O'Connell, and Krueger were high scorers on the Frosh Team with 76, 63, and 42 points in that order.
