Spending a quiet evening at home with his family is Kelso High School's guiding hand, Mr. Don Granholm. Seated with Mr. Granholm are his wife, Margaret, and two sons, Dean and Steve. Stevie was in the first grade this year while Dean is four years of age, This has been Mr. Granholm's fourth year as principal of Kelso High School. During this time he has gained the respect and confidence of both faculty and student body. Busy as he may be, his door is always open to anyone seeking aid or advice. Because of his keen interest in all school projects, Kelso Highs principal can be seen working right along with the students, whether it be scrubbing kettles from the concession stands or helping with plans for that big pre-game rally. We can al- ways depend on Mr. Granholm to cooperate. As student council advisor, Mr, Granholm has done much to prepare students for their future tasks. Kelso High School is known for its strong self-government-a government by which students develop faith in their own judgments and better understand a living democracy. lt is Kelso High Schools good fortune to have at its helm a person whose enduring patience, hearty cooperation, friendly attitude, and helpful guidance have combined to make it one of the best schools in the state. The big, new project started by the club this year was the school tutoring system, Torch members gave their study hall time to assist other students who needed help in some subject. This original idea went over very well-both tutors and their students benefited. Honor Students Belong to Torch . . . The club exchanged dinners with the R. A. Long honor society. These annual dinners help to create understanding between schools and provide a lot of fun and fellowship for everyone who at- tends. At commencement each year, Torch awards permanent pins to three-year members and a scholarship to an outstanding student, A search among former Torch members would reveal talented people in many fields. Rhythmic music flows sweetly from the instruments of the two dance bands at Kelso High School. The smaller of the two groups, the Starlighters, was organized late in the first semester of this year, After having played together for less than a month they provided the music for the dance after the Vancouver game. The Starlighters form a five-piece band which specializes in pop- ular and Dixieland music. The other group, which contains lO instruments, plays only popular music.
