O O Proud indeed is everyone in school of the progress made in the Music Department this year and of the fine showings made in music tournaments and civic affairs. Not only has the Music Department in- creased in size and efficiency but it also boasts an entirely new choruss the boys, chorus, consisting of twenty-live members. Because of the purchase of a munber ot' new band instrmuents and the gift of a number of violins, both the band and orchestra have in- creased skill and efficiency. This year the band drilled and became a marching band. Led by the two drum majoresses, Violet Poppert and Violet Pannell, they added color and enthusiasm to the games and assemblies. Almost every feature of the Music Department was represented in competition. Lois Tiemens, violing Bill VVade, trombone: and Willard Kruse, clarinet, went to Tacoma to take part in the Music Festival in February. The mixed chorus received a rating of Excellent in tl1e tourn- aluent in Olympia in March. The band and orchestra were both rated Fair in the competition in April. Individual honors go to Margaret Duff, who was rated Excellent for her soprano solo in the Longview competition and to .lean VVagner, who was rated Fair. Responsible for the success of the department is Mr. Butler, who, tlu'ough his encouragement, patience, and tireless effort, has given the school a fresh outlook and new hope in the field of lnusic. o s , . . ll ll ll ll ll ll ll H ll Hilanders! VVhen the call was given for trackmen this year, thirty boys, in addition to the seven returning lettermen from last year, turned out. Coach Emery Piper was faced with the development of a great deal of raw material. The squad was bolstered by the surprising number of under- classmen who not only made good this year, but also guarantee a source ol' material in the years to come. Bob Meyers was chosen captain of the team and led our Hilanders another successful season. BASEBALL With only one year of experience credited to all the boys on the base- ball team, Mr. Sonedecker developed the players into one of the top- ranking teams in the conference. The formation of a new Southwest league gave Kelso a hard schedule to play. Six schools Shelton, Aberdeen, Olympia, Longview, Centralia, and Kelso compose the league. Opening their season with a twilight game with Longview, April 14, they swung into action playing sixteen games in six weeks, a seven-game ser- ies with Longview and a faculty-varsity game, April 28. Curtis Hockett, .lolm Iilockner, Otie Klockner, Russell Miller, Bill Patterson, Mare Mc- Corkle, Allen Morris, Less Hudson, and Bill Lee were the returning letteri- men from last year's squad. All are returning except Hudson, Greena- myer, Hockelt, and McCorkle. The battery included Hockett, Pare. Lee, Hudson, Morris, Chambers and Leichhardt. . GULF . This year is one of the most successful golf seasons in the high school. Although two star performers were lost to the team, many under-class- men developed into excellent golfers. A new system of scheduling meets was adopted which attracted a large number of schools to the association. Mr. Sherman Dick has coached several outstanding players. among them Bud Jones, .lolm Martin, Wayne Doble, Gordon Orwig, Bill Holi, and Eugene Ellis. I ll ll M ll N, here come the Scots!
