All at once there was a crashl I bang' ' and blackness Whenl regarned consclousness I was lylng on a hospttal bed In my bewrl dered state I looked around to frnd someone to talk to and soon a nurse came to my bed She smrled at me and asked me 1f I felt better I had the feelrng that I had seen her some where before so I asked her who she was She replted that her name was ROSE TURNER that I was rn the Wrlltam Hudspeth Hosprtal She explarned that four days before I had been brought Into the hosprtal unconscrous from a blow on my head when my auto had crashed She and Dr B111 Hudspeth had recognrzed me as one of thetr former classmates at K U H S and they were pleased to see that I had regarned conscrousness at last It seemed that DR BILL HUDSPETH had attarned a very hrgh reputauon as an M D and had founded thrs brg hosprtal All thrs left me cold as I could not remember ever hearrng of K U H S and my supposedly famous classmates B111 Hudsperh and Rose Turner But I was grateful that they had been so krnd to me After a few days they decrded to release me from the hosprtal and let me work out a new l1fe for myself under any name I chose s1nce I d1d not remember my real name Dr Brll told me thatl had amnesra and that he had done all he could for me He thought 1n trme perhaps through a shock of some krnd I would gradually regaln my memory and would be able to resume the course of my ltfe as rt had been before I landed In the hosprtal They found a job for me as a clerk at Everhart Inc The butcher rn thts super market was a fellow by the name of BOB TALLMAN who sald he remembered me from our school days too He satd that butcherrng meat was fme but he drd not lrke cleanrng chrckens It seemed hard for hrm to get the knack of rt However he rs a plucky fellow and has made good at hrs chosen professron I d1d not meet the boss of thrs establrshment fas Dr Bxll had obtamed the Job for mej untrl a few days later I had notrced that durrng the day there was always the soft strummlng of a gurtar to be heard through the market They told me that the boss ROY EVERHART durmg hrs hrgh school days had played the gurtar very well and had accompanred htmself on rt as he sang such old favorrtes as Tennessee Waltz and Remember Me for the assembly programs He had collected qurte a number of records featurmg gurtar musrc whrch were played over therr P A system all durmg the day One day I had a vrsttor a noted news photographer for the New York Ttmes DON HOBERG Dr Btll had told htm about me so he came out to take my prcture and ask me a lot of ques trons I could not answer very many of hrs quesuons but he put my plcture rn the paper and gave me qurte a wrtte up As a result many people who clarmed to be former classmates got tn touch wrth me . . . . , . ,, ,, s . . SENIOR PROPHECY Qcontrnuedj BOB TALLMAN wrth whom I had become very frrendly rnvrted me to go wrth h1m and hrs wrfe fthe former Pat Berrsony to Crrro s one of the popular nrght clubs rn New York DON AUGENSTEIN was manager there so he welcomed us wrth a glad hand and a broad smrle as he conducted us to one of hrs best tables Hrs attractrve hostess PAT REEDER soon came over to our table to greet Bob and hrs wrfe and to ask me howl lrked the brrght lrghts after so many years rn Kelseyvrlle She seemed to have struck rt rrch as the lovely gown and Jewels she wore testrfred After a whrle a flam harred crgarette grrl wrth the brrefest possrble cos tume made her way toward us She seemed very frrendly wrth everybody and as she stopped at our table and gunned at me I thought surely I should know her but the name escaped me Bob trred to make the srtuatron less embarrassrng by askrng rfl drd not remember MARGIE HUD SPETH our vrvacrous yell leader at K U H S The band at Crrro s was very good and featured an expert saxophonrst BOB PEMBERTON I drd not remember hrm but hrs frrends were talkrng about how hard he had worked to get to be tops on hrs rnstrument and now he was srttrng pretty As the evenrng progressed the crowd became gayer and gayer One of the entertarners who was especrally popular was a blond who lrtcrally sparkled as she was shackled wrth dramond bracelets dramond rrngs dramond stars lll her harr dramond necklace etc etc They sard her name was NANCY THOMPSON Class of 51 butl drd not remember her Whrle we were eatrng a shy lrttle man made hrs way through the crowded room to our table and whrspered somethrng very confrdentral to Btb who drd not seem very rnterested However hrs frrend was very persrstent and frnally Bob he had some hot trps on the races at Saratoga Now Norman began to pass the confrdentral rnformatron on to me He sard that a Jockey he knew DEAN MARSHALL would be rrdrng Hrgh Strung the next day and he was almost sure to wrn I could wrn a lot of money rf I cared to bet on the race LEE ROY STILLEY owned the horse and JEFF MAHNKE had trarned her The gamblrng rnstrnct was always strong rn me so I borrowed S500 from Bob and placed a bet on the horse On the way out of the Club I notrced that Bob and Pat were very frrendly wrth the hat check gul She looked currously at me and smrled I gave her a brg trp and passed on They later told me that she was an old frrend ELEANOR JORDAN The race next day was very excrtrng When Hrgh Strung came rn a wrnner I sat down rn a daze wrth my head rn my hands DON BONE one of the clerks at Everhart Inc who had come wrth me to the race track began to shake me and say Gosh old Man don t you realrze what has happened to you? You must have won about S5000 on that race Let s go down to the offrce and collect All at once somethrng seemed to break rn my head and I looked at hrm and asked Where am I? What has happened? He grabbed me by the arm and sard Come along There rs no trme to explarn now I ll try to set you rrght after you have collected all the shekels that are comrng to you At the offrce I looked rnto the face of BILL STANLEY who oblrgrngly counted out to me S5000 rn S100 brlls wrth hrs congratulatrons As I looked around the crowded room I notrced a woman whoml recognrzed as MADELINE CHAPMAN She too had placed a bet on Hrgh Strung and had won qurte a lot of money She was so exerted and pleased that she was throwrng her arms around people laughrng and cryrng at the same trme whrle she contrnued to talk rn that hrgh prtched vorce about how she was gorng to spend the money she had won on a trrp to Pans rn the sprrng turned to me and asked me ifl remembered NORMAN KIRBYSON.
