They preceded us to Kelly, they multiplied While We were here, and some will remain here to speak for us. , There is one permanent record, however, that will t keep alive the memories of these glorious days. Maybe her thoughts ran something like this: How will the students accept a new principal? Shall I make an able successor in helping the school live up to its already fine reputation? These questions were quickly answered. Miss Mulroy has commented frequently on Kel1y's friendliness. She says, I was happy on coming to Kelly because I came into a situation where I felt such Warmth and friendliness that I felt quite at home. These friendships will grow even stronger with the years. One year has passed. Kelly's principal will see her first Iune graduating class receive diplomas, young men and women who will carry with them a pattern for living acquired during four years in a well administered school. Miss Mulroy, new friend and guide, Kelly salutes you! I x Page 6 A gave, , gn 1, 1, Q, W as X 10 sa w Z 1 Y, .. ,je 9 3 'WK ' H M, -w .. . ' -:- wi .. Scheduled with five teams who were to eventually enter the city play-offs, the Trojans held their own and at times seemed on the verge of upsetting the perennial favorites. After absorbing three straight defeats at the hands of C.V.S. and Fenger in practice tilts and Gage Park in league play, the Trojans rose to tie Semi- Finalist Dunbar 6 to 6. Kelly, however, was awarded the win on points. The team followed this game up with their first victory of the season, a 25 to 7 win over South Shore. A 6 to 6 tie game with Calumet gave the Trojans another victory on points. The next game was a battle for a play-off berth, but Kelly fell victim to Morgan Park when the Mustangs completed a long desperation pass in the closing four seconds of the game, giving them a l3 to 6 victory. The spirited line play of Co-Captain Pete Kiiowski, lohn Majewski, Williarrr Blaseclc, Gerald Cherny, Charles Walters, and Ends fohn Ienetzke and Ron Pacer was vigorous and aggressive. Complementing this were Backs Don Koehler, Don Kreith, lames Kudiinski, and Co-Captain Tom Barba, who led the team in scoring. The fine defensive play of Fran DeVal, Ron Robinson, and Bob Lizik was a bright spot in this year's football saga. ln summing up the seascn, it can be said that although it was not a victory- studded one, it was hard fought. This year's tearn was made up primarily of boys up from the Frosh-Soph and new boys who did not play Varsity last year. The only win of the season carne at the expense of Engle- wood, 66 to 64. Playing before a packed gym, the Trojans trailed eventual state finalist Du Sable by only six points at the half. Although the tall Panthers finally overcame the stubborn Kelly five, it was not before the Trojans had racked up one of the high- est point totals recorded against Du Sable in the Central Section. lt could be said that the FroshASoph had the sanie trouble as did the Varsity, lack of height. Again matching the Varsity, the junior five recorded a single victory, a 46 to 36 Win over Gage Park. L JAe ear n euiew One day many years from now when time has dulled the memories of Kelly days, this, your Lczmplighter of the l954e55 school year, may serve as a diary, recording events prominent and outstanding. We came back to the halls of learning after the longest vacation in history to welcome a new principal, Mary D. Mulroy. Enrollment 2,473 This was one of the years when Dwight D. Eisenhower was serving us as President, and Paul H Douglas and Everett M. Dirksen represented us in the Senate. Politics filled the headlines during the Senator McCarthy investigation of alleged communists. We sang and listened to Tony Martins Stranger in Paradise , and Doris Day's Secret Love . In a poll taken by the Clarion, Perry Como and Theresa Brewer were voted favorite vocalists. Ralph Martire's band was voted tops in this same poll. We filled the theaters to watch From Here To Eternity , The Glenn Miller Story , and Roman Holiday . This was the year Audrey Hepburn and Bill Holden won the academy awards. Who of us can easily forget the rabies scare, when the tamest, friendliest little pup was sud- denly looked on with suspicion! Du Sable reached the finals of the Sweet Sixteen state basketball tournament, losing to Mt. Vernon. The city championship went to St. Mel as a result of their victory over the Panthers. Qhicago's football laurels were captured by St. George when the Dragons swept to victory over Austin. This was the year the H-bomb humbled the world, when it was found that this one bomb could destroy a whole city the size of Chicago. Chicago was on the rise. The Fort Dearborn Project was in the planning stages, the Congress Street Highway was still in ccnstruction, and the St. Lawrence Seaway was going to make Chicago a great inland seaport. Yes, Kellyanl You lived this year at Kelly and loved it. One cf the pleasures of Open House is the oppor- tunity foi the faculty and alumni to get toaeitlier as Miss Burns and guests are doing here.
