Kelly High School reaches that epochal milestone this year. During her twenty-year history Kelly has had the follow- ing principals: Edward Wildeman, Isabella Dolton, and since 1939, Mrs. May C. Allen. Since her establishment as a senior high school in 1933, Kelly has been definitely a part of community life. She has built up a long roster of graduates who have made Kelly proud of them. As the Lamplighter goes to press, Mrs. A11en's efforts for a community park and playground are being rewarded. The area shown on the opposite page is being graded and landscaped. Page 7 Eecflcation The twentieth milestone of Kelly as a senior high school coincides with the closing year of Mrs. Allen's principalship of the school. Kelly had the good fortune to acquire Mrs. Allen in April, 19397 and ours was the good fortune to attend Kelly under her leadership. We shall always remember that Mrs. Allen expected us to live up to our possibilities in citizenship and scholarship. No other level of attainment was ever considered. We shall re- member, too, Mrs. Al1en's ideal of education for service, edu- cation not for self alone, but for opportunity to serve and to enrich other lives. Kelly High School will always reflect the influence of Mrs. Allen, and her ideals. For all that she has been to us and for all that she has done for us, we thank her. In loving regard we dedicate to Mrs. May C. Allen this anniversary story, the Lamp- lighter of 1953-1954. On coming from elementary to high school and the new freedom we were somewhat bewild- ered. It didn't take long, however, to outgrow our foolish friski- ness and we found ourselves living the high school routine and liking it. We liked the division period when, with the help of our division teachers, our problems were ironed out. We learned to like going into action at the ringing of the tardy bell. We felt privileged when it was our day to see the assembly. We weren't too happy when the teacher announced, All right now, we'll have a test. But usually even that worked out well. We met report book days as they came, sometimes sharply disap- pointed, sometimes happily surprised, but usually walking out of the room with the very mark we would have given ourselves. The pages that follow show a shot here and there of us in the classrooms, where by far most of our school hours were spent. Page 10 x ,Y 5 fr X FMA QOICJOFI, cg gfutzfon Assistant Principal Remember the day you were contrcnted with a serious program conflict, and you could see no way out? Then, in a wink, Mr. Hutton straightened out the problem? Mr. Hutton, assistant principal, is one ot nine faculty members who have been at Kelly since 1933, when it became a senior high school. During that time he has held varied positions: head of the technical department, adiust- ment teacher, program coordinator, head of the Gunsaulus Branch, and since l948, assistant to the principal. Mrs. Allen voices her appreciation thus: ln every position that Mr. Hutton has held at Kelly High School he has devised some technique for expediting the work of that department. These techniques have become part of a school citizenship and scholarship program which is a model in the city oi Chicago. Band music in the lunchroom, the G.A.A. carol sing, and parties and merrymaking here and there in the building, memories that will come surging back. Four big evenings the doors of the school were opened so that parents and community could come to see the schools of the year and how they operate. Another event too momentous to run more than once a year was the Community Council Dance, an event arranged for the benefit of the school, often in a hall so crowded with loyal Brighton Parkers that dancing room was at a pre- mium. The pictures that follow and the calendar bring to life again our high-school memories. We say, These days were ours , and of this record we say, This is ours for always. Page 54 -i.l.-..,..i,.,,, rom 12 leces to IO The Band antedates every other Kelly High School organization, even the athletic teams. lt had its beginning as a twelve-piece unit in 1935, with Mr. Franklin Borger as director. lt now numbers l08 pieces. At one time in its history it was an R.O.T.C. Band with membership only for boys. ln 1940 the Band became impressive in appearance as well as in per- formance, lt was a proud day when it made its first public appearance in uniforms, purchased with funds furnished by the Community Council. The organization has earned several superior ratings in City competition, the last five S-ratings being consecutive. We said earned , Countless times there were 7:00 a.m. rehearsals for sections and ensemble: many times, too, late afternoon practices. As many times as a member has participated in semi-annual concerts, so many times has he been proud to hear Mr. Borger introduce Mrs. Allen as the Band's number one booster. The Band was especially active in the war effort of l940-'45. They played at war bond rallies and flag-pole dedications. Several times they assembled at 5:00 a.m. to play when groups of draftees went off to camp. Favorite selections this year include, Badinage For Brassesn by Harold T. Waters, Poet and Peasant by Henry Fillmore, Mannin Veen by Haydn Wood. Page 55 qfelfcg figlz cslclzoof Cqrclcestra The Orchestra, organized only shortly after the Band, has a history somewhat similar. lt, too, has enjoyed a steady growth, has played on many public occasions, when string ensembles were called tor, and has always been a part of Kelly concerts. It, too, has earned superior ratings in City contests. The Orchestra, however, does not have a one-director history as does the Band. Mr. Borger was its first directory Lesly Markunis, the second. ln 1946, after war duty in the India-Burma-China section, Mr. Byron P. Blackard came to Kelly to direct the Orchestra. No, he did not conduct a band during World War ll. He commanded an airdrome squadron, and the music of those years consisted mainly oi the hum ot planes, the rhythm ot mechanics' hammers, and the temple bells ot Buddha. The Orchestra's concert selections this year were Bosa- rnunde Overture by Schubert and 'Bakoczy March . Favorites of the Orchestra include lazz Pizzicatou by LeRoy Anderson, Intermezzo from L'Arlesienne Suite by Bizet, and Bells Across the Meadows by Netelby, and, of course, the polkas, delight of concert audiences. It happened in our time: the baseball team captured three straight Central Section championships, running up 34 victories in a row, while finishing undefeated twice. The 1950 football team marched to the Public School League City finals in Soldiers' Field before losing the title to Lane Tech. The 1949-50 junior basketball team won Kelly's first section title in that divi- sion. Ronald Rimsza took the city wrestling championship in the 175-pound class in 1950, and was first in the City and second in the State in the heavyweight division in 1951. The boys' bowling team finished first in the City meet in 1951. Such All-Star perform- ers as Iim Koranda in football and baseball, Vince Trakan, Arn Banals, Allan Meyer, and Rudy Gonzales in baseball, Ioe and Tom Wojcik, Ken Ross, and Iohn Mette in football- all these wore Kelly uniforms during our four years. Football competition became more equalized when the City League voted to reor- ganize the four sections into six sections according to the team's record during the past five years. The junior basketball league was disbanded and replaced by frosh-soph basketball. Page 58 i s f x . , .. F, ' 3 has nw W M ,n A x 'W was ii, E WM my gf 4 W W1 'kb wx X 4 'M W1 MM fl W W V ma, . Tfwlalte Although not sporting the best record in Kelly's football history, the 52 Trojans were unbeaten when it came to spirit and a will to win. lnjuries hurt the tearn early in the year and could be held accountable for some of the early season losses. The outstanding line play of Captain john Mette, john Henderson, Rich Mucha, jerry Nawrocki, and Ed Stuart was spirited all season. Ends Tom Kotlarski and Gary Pearce along with backs Dan Cordero, Bill Lit- witz, Ed Kubitz, and Tom Barba were operating in high gear all season, Coach Prendergast agrees. A brilliantly fought l3-13 tie game with a strong C.V.S. team was one of the accomplishments of this year's Trojans. Trojans played a hard game with Gage Park. Although losing, the 52 Trojans proved to everyone that all Kellyans can truly be proud of the Trojan Football Team of 1952. Vince Trakan and Arn Banals posted ERA of .65 and .76. Koranda and Banals were rated All-City, and Trakan was named to the second team. Theirs are the intramurals to play in. the games to cheer in, the assemblies, the lunchroom aromas, report book days, clicking of the noiseless typewriters , snatches of practice from the music rooms, the dignity and grandeur of the concerts, the teachers and kids to see and to talk with every day, for one year more, or two, or three. No teacher comes closer to the lite of a Kellyan than does his division teacher thomeroom teacher to the older alumnil. It is the division teacher who interprets the administration to the student, guides him into the courses he most needs toward his career, watches his attendance habits tyes, perhaps like a hawk, but weren't you thankful atterward?l, helps him over some ot the rough bits ot the road that all but discouraqe at times, and reioices when the student makes good. Remember those division periods? Too short, really, tor all the announce- ments, the Student Council report, the checking ot occasional drives and collections, and the questions you had hoped to ask today. Well, see you tomorrow, in division! Page 93 f- ULIO!C!QfL I'ClflC J' r is-1 UI'Ll.OI' MISS WILSON, Aud. A . . .
