From this school graduate the trained young men and women whose education will fit them for re- sponsible leadership in their various spheres of lite. Fond memories are evoked by every possible view of the building. The center porch and stairs seem almost to surge with the sea of youth at dis- missal. The courtyard, with flag pole pierc- ing the cloud-swept sky, brings to mind Flag Day assemblies at which the en- tire school stood in reverent hush as Old Glory was proudly raised to unfurl its brilliant colors against just such a sky. The building may expand, and we do hope the long-awaited addition will soon materalize, but we of the class of '47 will fondly remember this - our Kelly High. Q Our rincipal Q Is there a baffling problem? Do we hesitate as to how to proceed? ' ' Does the only course seem impossible? When that stage is reached, what next? What-but go to the office, of course! Mrs. May C. Allen, our principal, doesn't know defeatism. Blessed with an executive mind, she comprehends every student difficulty. She never confuses the unessential with the essential. She has the happy faculty of extracting the essence of the problem and of speedily using the facilities at her command to solve it. We never feel let down by our principal. Countless times she has demonstrated that she has our best interests at heart. We trust her as our mentor, and, as we leave Kelly, we pledge our loyalty to the ideals she has implanted in us. 2 NV ' .Her .fueuage 21 tu 9 B Your diplcma is the outward sign of your graduation from high 3 0 school For every graduate, however, there is a, feeling of achieve- .vt I ment or lack of it that is the individual's way of knowing whether or ce not he is a successful graduate. You are all bigger than you were Sl' four years aoo Most of you are more capable, more efficient. and, no doubt wiser This growth is your reward for having used all the opportuntt es of your past school years to advantage. The measure of your success will manifest itself in your ability to get along wiL people after the careful guidance of your school has been left be and you win or lose by your own decisicns. We wish you all the success you are willing to work for and hope that as time goes on you ' - will apprecia e the honest efforts of the people who have so faithfully ccntnbuted to your welfare. g Y 've 15596 8 Q wx 1 .Fix QR fig, Kefly ,A Coluianl Backer Wasn't he the dad of the whole team last May in Peoria? lsn't he expected to appear at every social? And here he is with a typical following of lively rooters away out front in the gym. This is not an isolated case. Mr. McKeag is typical of Kelly fac- ulty members who are so genuinely interested in school affairs that attendance at them is second nature. We students certainly appreciate the sacrifice of time and personal interests so many of our faculty make for us. We feel that our teachers are more than our instructors. They are the reason that Kelly High is a friendly school. IO My 1 x n N - sq: N 'X ' :- : 4:1241 vs? f iv, ,gf 5 A H M :V lr h ,. , ..,.:, - H k.,,. We're truly seeing ourselves in them and recalling somewhat blushingly our greenness as fresh- men. We progressed a year only to find our sophomoric levity was as great a pitfall as our freshman gullibility. As juniors we often heard ourselves twitted because our little learning was a danger- ous thing. But now-ah, now We're willing to admit we don't know everything about everything. To tell the truth, we are beginning to realize how very little we know, and how very much there is to learn. You see, We're approaching Commencement. You'll be there soon, dear underclassmen. Geography study to- day shows the vital role international friend- ship plays in maintenance of world stability and peace. Acquaintance with and understand- ing of our foreign neighbors are prime requi- sites for living in the atomic age. The social sciences, through analysis of what has happened in the past, present a fairly good index of what will occur in the future. They help give students a social and political philosophy to guide their indi- vidual lives along lines conducive to domestic hap- piness and world harmony Atop her ladder Betty Heck surveys practically a world of knowledge available in Kelly's library. The Kelly High School Library can be one of the best friends a student has, but it is up to the student to learn to make it a staunch friend. Whether one looks for a biography, in- formation on a vocation or avocation, current fiction, or the best in contemporary magazines, he can find it here. High school education trains young men and women to make intelligent use of all libraries. Here is a friend that can and should be cultivated for life. 18 - 4 J. V 1 f ' . Eggs' eQ1.s2f .: W... . Scholarship is therefore not our only concern. A well-rounded program of education calls for a schedule of diversified activities in addition to academic work. Clubs, athletics, drama, band, choir, orchestra, publications, radio- these and other organizations furnish the extra fillip to round out our development. Representative of the activities which have endeared us to Kelly are those of Christmas week. Then all departments unite to enkindle Christmas spirit in the community. Beginning with the Christmas concert, running through the traditional school-wide singing of carols, and closing with the P. T. A. and division room parties, the joy of the season is infectious. And while that stocking of Santa's appears vast enough to hold presents for a score or more, the present all Kellyans receive is invisible, for it is from within. Participation with our fellow students in these friendly ac- tivities offered in Kelly brings us to the goal of our high school education-the development of the whole man. 42 bw gf 1' .sw , Q4 ,A 'aww fu .N X ,WN fs M I Rf S If QM VN, W9 ge Q f 1 WSW Q . Election is based on character, as measured by trait ratings, scholarship, computed on the point system, leadership and service, judged on the number of civic award points credited to the candidate. Our schoo1's chapter, known as Kelly Chapter ot the National Honor Society, and sponsored by Miss Eckel, carries out several proj- ects each semester. A major responsibility assumed by this group is the clerical work and other detail in connection with programming and registering of students for the following semester's classes. Cn the social calendar are the picnic sponsored by the Chapter and the semi-annual luncheon in honor of all members, following the initiation ceremony. No membership roster is given here since it would be outdated by the time the book appears. 45 Nancy Buck, Edwin Rymek, Lulu Gardner, and Ioan Batastini, Kelly Honor Society otticers, industriously ponder the records to find who are to receive the Society Torches. Gathered around the new gift phonograph, Eugene Karasek, treasurer, Lorraine Zelmer, secretary, Norman Provan, president, and Florence Sooker, vice president of the Student Council, give the impression that directing student government at Kelly High is not entirely a matter of raising funds and meeting quotas. No, Ray Hybacki isn't buying Christmas wrappings. He's merely chuck- ling over some of those contributed in response to the Iunior Red Cross appeal. Glenn Rogers and Eugenia Bantsolas appear pleased over the results of this Student Council activity. Mrs. Prendergast, the sponsor, coordinates all these activities. 54 W If 0 he Old sfampliglzter of feng, ,gong alg U t wnlajfvive Z' - ,gfizc f74Z In the year of this book, 1946-'47, we were singing about the ol amp lighter, whom we knew only in pictures of long, long ago: but the song had a haunting melody for us. We were singing, too, Sonata, Anniversary Song, Managua Nicaragua, and Open the Door, Richard. We were still jitterbugging and fox-trotting, but for Sentimental Reasons we enjoyed the revival of the waltz with the Missouri tune and the Merry Widow. We saw the motion pictures: The Iolson Story, The Yearling, Razor's Edge, Night and Day, It's a Wonderful Life, and we sat three hours to see The Best Years of Our Lives. By way of entertainment at school we had, to mention only a few, Anita Blair and her seeing eye dog, Fawn, the Abraham Lincoln film starring Walter Huston, a thrilling exhibition by the gymnastic team, and G.A.A. carol sings in the gym with Mr. Childs as Santa Claus. Getting to and from school was simplified when the new Archer express busses began running, relieving somewhat the pre-school jam on the street cars. Employers were no longer apple-polishing to us as in the war years but plenty of jobs were still to be had-and plenty of us had them. Selective service was on again, off again, on again. It was the year when a change of time-schedule in midyear found us suddenly getting fifteen minutes more of sleep in the morning-Ah ---- It was Kilroy's big year to put in his claim of being here, and then to be completely and irrevocably forgotten. It was the year when Lamplighter pictures had to be taken before Christmas in order to insure Iune delivery of the book. It was a good year, was 1946-'47 55 alffnletzcd Kelfy, .Make Zhu! goal Only a few breathless minutes to go. The score is tied. The crowds are cheering excitedly, faculty as well as students. Be it basketball, football, soccer, baseball, volleyball, wrestling-all eyes are on the performers of the moment. But there is more than meets the eye. Friendliness and good sportsmanship are emphasized during the year in every sports activity-win or lose, the peppy cheerleaders leading the vocal contingent, the players playing a hard game, and the entire school backing them-rain or shine. Mrs. Allen and the gym department have worked out a physical education course which has proved a model for high schools. We've all had fun along with the serious business of buildinq strong bodies. 56 nw Ist Row: Raudonis, Bailey, Willey, Baran. Bamford, Kardas, Burnowski, Beales, Kolecki, Kinzel, Kardas, Kromplewski.
