MHS. !lLLEN'S MESS EE TU GRAD ATE5 Dear Boys and Girls: After watching you improve in independent thinking and develop as individuals for four years, it is difficult to see you leave our school. Iust as your fathers and mothers are doing, I yearn to shield you from dangers and guard you from errors. I cannot protect you from physical haz- ards, but I can counsel you about your mental and ethical ideals, even though advice to you, who will shortly face death for humanity, seems presumptuous. Many people mistakenly think that appreciation for our servicemen means the removal of all restraint from their actions. I am as eager as anyone to show that I recognize the stupendous sac- rifice we are asking boys to make, but we are asking that sacrifice in order to maintain the standards of right living in our civilization. The American standard of conduct is high enough to embrace a strict code of morals for the individual and thoughtful consideration on his part for the rights of his associates. The true American in adhering to his own principles is uninfluenced by any laxness or carelessness he may see around him. Kelly students are .as real Americans as can be found anywhere. I know, therefore, that I need not warn you to beware of deviating from the ideals you learned at home and at school, whether you go into the country's service, or to work, or continue your education. Most of you boys expect to see active service in the Army or Navy shortly after graduation. On every battlefront, boys like you are facing death today and every day until victory. From every engagement some will fail to return. All our people believe that the soldier who dies on freedom's battlefield gloriously justifies his birth. His life is compressed into a shorter time than the average span but he has the privilege of knowing that his life is so complete that it takes a Greater Mind than that of any human being to reward his magnificent final moment. They will not come back but the majority of our soldiers will return to civilian life in that enduring peace for which your class planned throughout the years. Having faced death, how are you going to face life again? Difficult times are ahead for every individual. Choices of occupations, amusements, and friendships are hard to make. Don't waste a moment in aimless deviation from one idea to another. Plan immediately for your entire life even though you have no immediate prospect of putting your plan into effect. Do not let wars, depressions, or other considerations keep you from making decisions and laying foundations for your future improvement. Keep making plans and testing their feasibility as long as you live. When you work according to your own design, you are bound to be progressive and happy. You will be the type of individual upon whom the faculty of Kelly High School can rely to carry forward the ideals of civilized living. May c. Allen Principal c 19 s

Kelly students know that Mrs. Allen is working always toward higher standards and achievements for the school as a whole and for every student's maximum ac- complishment. She has broadened our social contacts through our participation in activities. She has helped us to cultivate new interests through the club program. She has deepened our awareness of duties as citizens. She has placed emphasis on scholarship as a necessary measure in meeting the challenges of post-war America and world relationships. Mrs. Allen has held before us the confidence that we can succeed. We believe that in these four years we have grown in ideals, service, and abilities. In every part of our lives, at all times we will con- tinue to benefit and prosper from his endeav- ors to help us. ik The MAIN OFFICE is the scene of divi- sion ot labor and cooperation on the part ot Kelly's competent clerical staff. Miss Eileen Halloran, school treasurer, has charge of student funds and the recording oi school accounts. Miss Priscilla Crossette, corre- sponding secretary and attendance clerk, has the responsibility of getting out the bul- letin twice a week and taking care of the teachers' records. Miss Virginia Petersen, registrar, has charge ot incoming and out- going student records. O 0 O ik MR. HUTTON has administered the affairs of the Gunsaulus Branch ever since it became a Kelly unit in 1939. We of the Branch are deeply appreciative of his advice and guidance, and will always remember the good friend ot our freshman year.
