The schools must make sure that youth is equipped to meet these emergencies. Kelly has accepted the challenge. Our boys and girls face a world of tumult, conflict., warg but they have an intelligent view- point of life and know the importance of the job to be done. They realize that the war must be won before we can have peace and return to the American Way of Life. Hatred of the enemy and desire for revenge have not been taught at Kelly, but we have taught a strong and positive love of freedom and fair play, and the strength of their opposition to slavery and injustice will be irresistible. We hear no gloomy pessimism at Kclly, but rather a wholehearted enthusiasm for the call to service, for drives to secure scrap, to oversub- scribe quotas in sales of stamps and bonds, to donate blood, to remember the boys in service, to supplement the labor shortage by working long hours in addition to attending school with new interest in school work, and most important of all, by joining the armed forces when needed. We find Kelly's youth in all branches of the Nation's forces fighting for victory. Early in the present crisis Kelly was one of the first high schools to revise the physical fitness program and give strong emphasis to toughening up exercises for boys and girls with the result that our boys and girls have confidence in their physical ability to win the war. We have endeavored to impress students with the importance of successful planning, based on wholehearted and intelligent participation of all citizens, so that peace can be made by a fully in- formed and farsighted people. CONTRIBUTION TOWAR pation in group thinking, in discussion, and eon- tributions to leadership in our school groups have been encouraged because the ideas of every member are needed in a democracy and the technique of cooperative action must be known by all if democracy is to survive. School life at Kelly affords a means and an opportunity for all pupils to receive the benefit of their compliance with certain accepted social principles and standards and the privilege of expressing themselves legitimately. By contrib- uting to wholesome school spirit students learn the fundamentals of intelligent community spirit which are needed to perpetuate the ideals of democracy. We look to each succeeding grad- uating class to help raise the standards of life to higher levels because of its own improved
