He has become so efficient in his work that it is almost impossible to imagine anyone replacing him. ' MR. GORDON S. It is the end, and yet, it is the beginning, for it will take a good number of years to climb gradually the rugged path of knowledge, which will enable us to find our niche in the world. We never realized nor understood the full meaning of success in life until We seriously began work at Kelly. Here, our thoughts, our actions, our responsibilities were greatly influenced by the environment. Here, we became conscious of the fact that the youth of a nation is at once its present power and its future hope, and that the ideals of the student today are the activities of humanity tomorrow. Today we have reached the pinnacle of our high school education. It now becomes our privilege to look back over the ground we have trod, review- ing in our minds every strife, every effort, every victory that has brought us one step nearer to the attainment of our goal. Memories of our first year as Freshmen show us how little we knew about tackling the problems before us. But . . . the school handed us new subjects, new formulas of life, new rules for success, and soon we found ourselves cr part of Kelly, enthusiastically awaiting the day when we would no longer be the lowly Freshmen. Sophomore and Iunior years broadened our scope of learning and activity. We became more confident, more determined, more intelligent. New interests found their way into our daily routines. New accomplishments and ambi- tions stimulated us to higher achievements. We began to sense our position in the school and the responsibility and prestige that would be ours as Seniors. The last year laid before us some sound principles. It rounded out our training and showed us that the best side-partner in life is an education, a tool that will chisel a place in the world for those with initiative and ambition. Our Senior year taught us how to think straight and how to make many decisions of our own, how to accumulate useful knowledge, and how to apply it to advantage. Finally, it worked hard to make us people of character with broadness of vision and loftiness of purpose, ready to face and resist all the trials of life, after we leave our Alma Mater to tread the road . . . alone. Where will this road lead us? To SUCCESS or FAILURE! It can only be SUCCESS, if we live up to the ideals of Kelly High School. MARION A. Today is the end of our childhood-the principal has told us we are young men and women and we must do credit to our- selves by actually being young men and women. O February 1, 1937. We don't feel very grown up now! Was it possible that our principals had not realized they were sending us into a world more terrifying than could have been imagined in our little grammar school sphere? It is altogether differ- ent, we are really tiny, insignificant freshies, pushed around by upper classmen. And from all appearances, the teachers are either too obliging or too busy to be real pals. February, 1938. Would you believe it? We actually lived through that long year of fresh- manship. We're sophomores! Those juniors and seniors better watch out, we're coming up behind them very re- lentlessly and don't intend to let them get very far ahead of us. February, 1939. Aha! the seniors have not heeded our warning, and quietly we have slipped up on them. They will well watch their steps now that we have become estim- able junior students, for we intend to take over their offices and become friends with them, in spite of their hos- tile appearances. We've heard that Miss Larson is to be our lunior sponsor -we wonder if she will be likeable? uf--A Page 31 February, 1940. After three years of hard work, we have reached the exalted state of sen- iordom. Everybody knows us lwe think so, anywayl, We're beginning to feel respected and adult-like fthe teach- ers call it conceitl, and we have many exciting events to look forward to. Hap- pily, Miss Larson has proved to be the fulfillment of our dreams of a perfect sponsor, and she is pleasing us by again consenting to be our guiding 1ight. Following Edward Pacek, our Iunior Club president, Edward Bag- donas will exercise the duties of the 4B presidency-capably, we know. O February, 1941 . Surprisingly we are already leaving the helpful direction of Miss Larson and Miss O'Too1e, leaving the new- found friendship of Mrs. Allen. Will we succeed? Will we again lose confidence in the world now that we have left long cherished friends? We think not. We have gained a belief in ourselves and our works. We have had instilled in us a realization of our own capabilities and their advantages, and we fully intend to use this knowledge. We will not fail the teachers who faith- fully trust us to carry on Kelly's tradi- tions in the outer world, nor will we fail in ourselves to uphold the acquired concepts which, together with our forth- coming experience, will fashion our 1ife's pattern. oaral of cibirecford EDWARD BAGDONAS GENE KALINSKI DOROTHY QUINN IONE CHALLAND ALFRED LEVREAU SANDRA SKOWRONSKI WILLIAM ATTIYEH RICHARD KERSTEIN MISS LARSON, Sponsor ALBRECHT, ARTHUR KArtl-Lunch Guard, Iunior Club. ZIMMAN, EDWARD lEdl-Senior Boys Club. a 5 kr fAe memory . . . A5 SUNG BY KELLY GRADUATES Thanks for the memory of days that have gone by. Of fun we've had, and friends we've made here at Kelly High. How lovely it's been! Thanks for the memory of each kindly helping hand, That guided us through these four years with firm and just command. How grand it has been! Kelly, oh how can we leave you, We part with a longing regret. How can we ever forget too. Of these years spent and what they've meant. Thanks forthe memory of Ke1ly's green and white, Its ever guiding light: We're heading for success and with you we'l1 reach its height: Farewell true Alma Mater, Farewell dear Kelly High, And thank you so much. Thanks for the memory of pictures on the walls, Of Military Balls, those little things at Kelly that our memory recalls: How jolly it's been! Thanks for the memory of Kelly's football scores, And our Cheerleaders' roars And how we moaned when Fulton phoned to give us those encores: How carefree it was! Many the exams we have taken, And many the times we were told That if we showed no improvement, We'd still be at Kelly when we grew old. Oh, thanks for the Memory of Bow days and May Queens, Of many happy scenes: Of classmates and of Prom dates that glorified our teens: These we leave behind us But the memory remains, So thank you so much. They saw victory and defeat and handled both in true sportsmanlike manner. Of the games in which Kelly saw defeat, most were lost by only a small margin and during the last quarter of play. The Lindblom game, one of the best games played by the Seniors, was lost by only two points. Victories over such oppo- nents as Tilden, Farragut and Gage Park proved the Iuniors to be a strong and hard-fighting team. Teams that show this type of fighting spirit shall always be an example to future cagers. Senior Basketball Team First How- H. Eqielski, E. Wal- ters, W. Piatek, A. Kendra, Captain. B. When first organized as a team in 1937 by Mr. Hansen, the boys showed enough talent in this American game to enter the Central Division Prep League. Now under the supervision of Mr. R. Hermann, Kelly has played its fourth season of competition, depending on its hitters and pitchers, to win more games and greater fame. Soccer Team-A sport which occupied the spot light for many exciting weeks this season was the Trojan Soccer Team. From a cellar spot in the league last year, the team jumped into second place making itself a serious contender for the championship. Though this Iune will see the departure of some players, the team still possesses most of the boys rarin' to bring the next championship to Kelly. Swimming Team-Speed and rhythm are words to be as- sociated with Kel1y's Swimming Team. This group of boys is made up of two classes, the Senior and the Iunior, both under the supervision ot Mr. A. Herman. Although first mention goes to the Seniors because ot their title, the Iuniors show just as much talent and skill. Each team participated in four meets, with Koske and Misavich, the captains, standing out as stars. Wrestling- 'Rass1in,' as we commonly call it, is fast be- coming a popular sport at Kelly. The boys made a magnificent showing this season, winning four out of the five matches fought. No doubt Mr. Fralick's excellent coaching and the use of plenty of brawn and muscle by the boys accounts for their triumphant season. Page 57 .f4fALfic:i PHEIIISIU BIIWLINB ' GULF ' PENDING ' RIFLE Bowling-Devotion of their Monday afternoons to strenuous practice has resulted into a high class team of Bowlers at Kelly. The skill developed by such bowlers as C. Wojatano- wicz, T. Iurkevicius, H. Karpowitz, Mike Drodz and H. Cmieliw- ski enabled them each to win a bowling ball and bag by lead- ing in the City Sectional Championship games. The five best bowlers representing Kelly in the School Championship were Warren Otto, Captain, Mike Lynch, Elmer Lange, Chester Wojatanowicz and T. Iurkevicius. Incidentally Warren Otto, the Captain, received a trophy for being the highest scorer and one of the best. Golf and Tennis-Kelly first introduced golf and tennis in the regular gym classes. Popular demand of the students made these sports games of competition. The Golf Team under the guidance of Mr. Fralick showed good performance by fin- ishing in a tie for first place with Hyde Park and Lindblom due, mainly, to the skill shown by Trowbridge, Bardzynski and Wolff. Fencing Team-Fencing, an art which has been in vogue for centuries, is still finding enthusiasts at Kelly. Although the boys do not intend to use this art in self defense, they find the speed and perfection it requires, ample reason for the develop- ment of its skills. Mr. R. Hermann is their coach. Rifle Team-The best equipped indoor rifle range in the city is the possession of the Kelly R. O. T. C. Rifle Team. Expert riflemen, sharpshooters, marksmen, and pro-marksmen have been discovered in the two years that this team has functioned at Kelly. Sgt. Hickman is to be congratulated on the excellent work he has done to promote Kelly's team as one of Chicago's best. Page 58 Boys' Bowling Team First Rowe-E. Lange, O. Mallo. Mr. Hermann, W. Albrecht. GIRLS ATHLETICS Girls' Bowling Team-Mr. R. Hermann's four teams of bowlers try hard to win the Bowling tournament, and also to receive individual trophies for high scores. Bowling has become a very popular sport with the Kelly girls, and many of them are now working to receive extra points toward their letters. O 0 9 Badminton and Recreational Games Club-A year ago this club's major pur- pose was to popularize itself among the students and to increase their knowl- edge of different sports. Miss Iohnston's thirty members show that they took advantage of the wonderful opportunity offered them to use all the recreational equipment, and are surely glad they did so. O O 0 Volley Ball All Stars- The cream of the crop, the best of all girl volley ball players at Kelly are on this team. Their skill in putting the ball over, and putting it over in the right place, wins them the admiration of all other players. O O O G. A. A. Board-Assisted by Miss Iohnston and Mrs. Lassen, these capable girls plan all the interesting events sponsored by the G. A. A. Their efforts in trying to keep the largest Kelly society united have been rewarded by the hearty response of new members. O O 0 Girls' Fencing Team-Self-assurance, grace, enjoyment: all these things are the rewards of Mr. R. Hermann's twenty-five fencers. The girls always look forward to their next meeting to learn more of the honorable sport of dueling, for the sake of perfected poise. O O O Girls' Swimming Team-Our own little fishies in the pool develop perfec- tion in speed and stroke, and offer entertainment in water ballets and exhibi- tions. The team, sponsored by Mrs. Lassen and Miss Iohnston, has proved itself worthy of the compliments bestowed upon it. Page 61 Page B2 io' iw xl P 1 ' I f i W Y V-W v, 5 ,,, , v-Ml . . National Honor Society-Scholarship, leadership, character, and service are the qualities which make these students eligible for membership in this organization. The event which all members eagerly anticipate is the initiation and luncheon held each semester in their honor. .lt . ,fl-. :wt f 5 I 1 O O 9 Q ' Vljat-7 lil, , l'l, Kelly Honor Society-A stepping stone to the National Honor Society is the Kelly Honor Society which is comprised of intelligent and ambitious lower classmen. This group ranging from 1A's to 3B's must have an average rating of E or above in their major subjects, and not lower than G in their minor subjects. This year there are about one hundred and seventy-five members in the society. 9 O O Branch Honor Society-Kelly may well be proud of this ambitious and indus- trious group of students who have not waited until they have come to Kelly to join an honor society. Instead, under the direction of Miss Riley, they have organized an Honor Society distinctly their own, boasting cz membership of eighty-four. 0 Q O Civic Forum-What is happening in the world today? Ask a Civic Forum-er and he will supply you with the answer. Students with a flair for debating and discussion find Civic Forum meetings ideal for this purpose, as well as being very instructive. Page 65 aw GHJ UPLJQP. . . Ushers-What an uncommon sight it would be to see a Kelly assembly, production, or evening dance without neat, mannerly ushers to keep order. For four consecutive years Mr. McKeag has seen to it that these Upper Class- men do their utmost to serve satisfactorily. O O O Hall Guards-Where's your pass? Stop your running! Pick up that paper! Keep to the right! These phrases might be the slogans of our well-organized Hall Guard system. Miss Lynskey has efficiently sponsored this group and sees to it that the period captains supervise the guards most capably. 6 0 0 R. O. T. C. Officers Club-The leaders of Kelly's R. O. T. Finance and figures are words that identify this group, and boosting Clarion circulation is their chief aim and desire. 6 0 O Clarion Literary Staff-The group responsible for making the Clarion a journalistic gem is none other than the Clarion Literary Staff. Keeping Kellyans informed is their chief occupation, and under the direction of Miss Lynch they strive to accomplish this end. O O 6 Clarion Representatives-You can find one of these students in every divis- ion room, each with an eye for business. They sell subscriptions, collect money and distribute papers with an efficiency and promptness that we have come to depend upon and admire in all of them. Q Q Q Lamplighter Staff-Confronted with the enviable task of carrying on the work of our predecessors, the Staff has tried to live up to past standards. If we come slightly near meeting those standards, it will have been through the efforts of our faculty supervisors, Mrs. Robinson and Mr. Bils, and through the whole-hearted cooperation of the entire Staff. O O Q Lamplighter Representatives-Twenty-three hundred subscriptions was the mark set by the Circulation Staff this year. Our success in attaining this height is due essentially to the Lamplighter representatives. A vote of thanks is due these super salesmen for the spirit they have shown in our drive. O O O Latin Club-Better known to the student body as The Optimates, the Latin Club has fostered a feeling of fellowship among Latin students. Miss Durkin has worked to present a clearer understanding of Rome's contribution to our modern, streamlined civilization. O O O German Club-Miss Potratz, sponsor of Der Deutsche Verein, has always endeavored to acquaint her German students with the richness of the Ger- man language in music, literature, and science. Through her efforts the club has made a creditable name for itself in the Kelly community. O O O French Club-The gaiety of Old France is revived when the two groups of French students meet. Their supervisors, Miss DeGraH and Mrs. Robinson, have instilled in the minds of these Frenchmen the beauty of France and her products, and continually work to keep this thought alive in Le Cercle Francais. O O 0 Kamera Club-Click, and we have a picture of the Kelly Kamera Club. Thirty-five ambitious members, who have learned much about the principles of photography. planned an interesting social calendar, and under Mr. Nel- son's leadership sponsored a photography contest, yet find time to assist the Clarion in photography work. Page 81 IQIQQI' 6145! . . . Senior Girls Club-Girls-and more girls is no exaggeration when speak- ing of the Senior Girls Club. Their only competitor in the way of being the largest all-girl organization at Kelly, is the G.A.A. It has become the custom oi these girls to wear some mark of distinction to identify their organization. This year the girls chose Kelly green sweaters with a Senior Girls emblem. They spread friendship around the school and are always willing to aid their younger sisters. O 0 O lunior Club-A greater unity of the complete Iunior class is felt because of their gathering in one group as the Iunior Club. Because of this friendlier feeling toward one another, their socials meet with satisfied approval. Mrs. Lassen is known as the pal of all the members. O O O Senior Boys Club-Not to be outdone by the Senior Girls, the Senior Boys organized a club similar in form. Promoting good-fellowship among the boys and better acquainting themselves with one another became their objectives. Within a few short weeks they issued forth with their plans for the semester, which included a tag day, a dance and a party for the Senior Girls. Page 82 Y'ff' ?+ YfXf5??X'?3e1+ .L ., . Under the leadership of their president, Mrs. Malay, they strive for the betterment of the youth today, so that in the future they may be less handicapped. Q O O P.T.A. Chorus-The P.T.A. Chorus, under the direction of their very capable and enthusiasic leader, I. W. Iohnston, meets every Monday afternoon at two o'clock in the Social room. Singing more than any other chorus in our dis- trict, they have succeeded in obtaining wonderful results. O Q O Motion Picture Club-The Motion Picture Club which was organized three years ago has served a worthy purpose at Kelly. Thru this organization various classes and assemblies are able to see educational films which are distributed and shown by boys trained for this work. O Q O Checker Club-The Checker Club, organized by R. E. Hermann and now under the able direction of Mr. Peterson, is one of our newest clubs. It did very well in the Chicago High School Champion Meet, taking fourth place. Its captain, Alfred Savich, has a very good record and has never been defeated. O O O Twins-You may think you are seeing double but we assure you that this is a group of Kelly twins. Kelly never seems to be without these double per- sonalities who are that much nicer because they come in pairs. Page 85 WELCOME ' Bawemome. FRESHMEN .1 ELLV BER SCHOOL.
