CLASS or JUNE 1939 2 equeatknan To Kelly-our Kelly-that tradition of leading its students onWard-onward- so inducing them With a firm but gracious hand, that, after graduation has come and gone, Kelly graduates can face the world and say, with a voice devoid of apprehension but rather filled With confidence, I Will. Kelly is not an inanimate school, but has a soul or spirit-it is alive. And, living, it knows that its graduates will succeed, will push themselves ahead. To the faculty-We bequeath that feeling of well-satisfied existence which accompanies work Well-done. What if the work was difficult? What if the students, at times, seemed ungrateful, not repaying effort with effort? When you see the students graduate, at the sacred, magical moment when the diploma changes hands, you must feel that it was worth it. When the eager, shining faces of those, now men and women, look from the stage, not at you, the faculty, but past you, looking through the rose-tinted glasses of youth, looking through upon that which is to come through your efforts, when you see that-then you can feel satisfied at the work you have done. Then you can be contended, although you no longer will be able to keep Watch over them, that the seeds of culture have been planted in their minds, not sown broadcast, but rather with care and diligence. We bequeath to our classmates that one thing which time alone can erase from their minds: memories. Memories of that notable day when we first stepped over Kelly's threshold, through the Worried, harried, Frosh period, the Sophisticated Sophs days, the vagaries of our Iunior year, and the free, blase Senior Age, to the time when we last leave Kelly, with the world before us. Those memories are ours. Those memories are sacred. Those memories will live, they are indelibly imprinted upon us, they will influence our future, they will help choose our life friends. Before I, the barrister, lay down the valedictory pen, l wish to express one hope: although leaving Kelly may be the end of the training period in life for many of you, it should rather be a means to an end-an end which is in your hands, and your hands alone, Kelly has attempted to influence that end for the better, may its efforts have succeeded! But ohl-then came the rude awakening. We were but lowly Freshies. Every class was difficult to adjust one- self to. Then the day of transformation camel Next fall, upon entering, instead of being spurned, we did the spurning. We were Sophornoresl Then, later, as Iuniors, the clubs and activities began to exert their wiles, and we rushed to join. Life was turned to a quicker tempo now, and we swept through the year, ioyfully noting the Iunior Prom. In the Senior year, our pace slowed down as we were loath to leave our school. We felt that our Senior year would not have been such a brilliant success without the invaluable assistance of our sponsor, Miss Linden. Looking forward past graduation, we attempted to pierce the veil of the future. But we were certain of noth- ing but this, that our stay at Kelly would influence us from this time forward, and that the future would be made a little more certain because of that influence.
