As a sonq, the LAMPLIGHTER has a theme ot more pictures. The Statt strikes the introductory chord, and, as the melody Ilows on, the harmony and rhythm are contributed by the Student Body and the Faculty. The final and fading notes are sounded: may the memory linger on! LEADERS You are the stepping stones to our success in liteg for tour years we have striven under your care, not merely the objects with which your work is concerned, but as various individuals and interesting specimens ot human nature. Although We are each cast in his or her own individ- ual pattern, We are still willing and in need of the instruction and friendly guidance that you extend to those who pass through your hands. Behind each success is the patience, the effort ot the teacher. Page ll TO THE GRADUATES of IUNE 1938 - IANUARY I939 KELLY HIGH SCHOOL SENDS YOU FORTH WITH FAITH, WITH HOPE, WITH LOVE: FAITH IN YOUR ABILITY AND TRAINING, HOPE THAT YOU MAY FIND YOUR RIGHT-, FUL PLACE IN THE WORLD WHERE YOUR ABILITY AND TRAINING WILL COUNT, AND LOVE ON WHICH YOU MAY ,DEPEND FOR HELP, HOWEVER AND WHEREVER YOU MAY NEED IT. OUR HEARTS, OUR HOPES ARE ALL WITH THEE, ARE ALL WITH THEE! MMM, Class of lune l938 Q CLASS OFFICERS President CHARLES MCVAY Vice President CHESTER IABLONSKI Secretary MARIE GREEN Treasurer NICK KAMZIC It is with mingled pride and regret that we peruse another completed chap- ter in the book of our educational life. With pride, because we feel that our graduating class, the largest since Kelly's origin, has added new laurels to the growing reputation of our school: with regret, because our hearts are heavy at the thought of parting with instructors and fellow students, whose mem- ories we cherish so dearly. The fascination and inspiration we experienced upon enrolling in Septem- ber, '34, and the thoughts, ambitions, and dreams we sustained during the following four years will remain forever verdant in our hearts. As our Sopho- more year became a reality, the challenge of high school life induced us to aspire to individual goals. Participation in various social and scholastic activities ensued: our latent talents came into prominence. Our Iunior year saw us on the brink of high school maturity. We began to realize the significance of our abilities and endeavored to further their de- velopment. Some donated their journalistic talents to the Clarion , while others made dramatic history with their superb performance of Polishing Papa . Eventually, we became what we had been longing to be-Seniors! With this rating came work and closer contact with our fellow students. Now as we discard our robes on graduation night, our last intimate con- nections with our school will be severed, but the memories of those days are milestones, erected in our hearts. We pause, and pass the torch to the eager hands below, that wave farewell! We go forth to appease our unquenchable thirst for knowledge. What lies ahead? Obstacles, hopes, dreams-more fields to conquer! ANGELINE O'BRADOVIC AMELIA WHITTINGHAM LAST WlLL AND TESTAMENT ofthe CLASS of IUNE l93S As we take up the valedictory pen to bequeath to posterity our heritage of abundant knowledge, our educational equipment, our congenial surround- ings, and our high hopes yet to be realized, we pause to meditate and rem- inisce at the expense of this, our last unanimous address. Successors, immediate followers, you exalted Seniors who are closest our advancing footsteps, we place in your hands the problems, cares, and brief thrill of our dignified position and attainment of a slight authority in student affairs, from the status of a lofty hall guard who admonishes dallying Freshies, to a position of responsibility and prominence of vital benefit to the entire school. f'- Iuniors, yours is the impending and happily acquired privilege ofbecom- ing the leaders of this co-educational institution. Yours will be the burden and acclaim for the short day, until you too, shall pass onward as the Classes of '39 and '40, To the Sophomores we bequeath greater hopes and aspirations, with energy and initiative to enter the various activities and work upon the dreams closest your youthful hearts. . Upon the Freshmen we bestow our dignity to withstand the cool,. scrutinizing eye of the upperclassmen. Yes, we recall with a pang, tstrange to admitl, the vacant searching look upon the faces of the newly-fledged Kellyans, as we scoffed at them to hide the bitter desire of joining their ranks again. Yes, we the unapproachable envy you. We endow you with the traditional Bow- Day green bow and lollipop, also the audacity with which you consumed it in class, glorying in this new liberty. To our friends, the Faculty, we leave a fleeting memory of the ranks of the youth 'of today, who are whirled from your protecting wing, 'neath which we paused for a while, before heeding the call of the road. Many thanks, friends, for your aid in embarking us upon the eventful adventure of gradua- tion. We extend to you our handclasp in return for that all-powerful store of knowledge which you have given us. And to each other, we will courage and success in furthering those dreams we launched four years ago, about whose fragile structure we built the founda- tion of our career and life itself. And to ourselves, as future alumni, we will this book, a document, a lasting record, as a memento of our yesterdays within these portals. In solemn witness whereof, we affix our official seal and signatures. M ardel Sauter Secretary ...... ........ E lla Kiaup Treasurer . .... Alyce Ahlgrim Class History We are the graduates of Ianuary, '39l The hand of Fate brought us together: brought us from surrounding neigh- borhoods and other cities. A few of us spent our first semester of high school at the Burroughs Branch. Miss Martha Hinkel was the head of the Branch, and now we can see that it was she, along with Miss Best, Miss Monaghan, Miss Shaack, Mr. Sheehy, and Mr. Allaben who really started us on the road to achievement. After that first, long year, we gained the title of Sophomores. At last we felt that we were getting somewhere on that long road that leads to being a Senior. We gained new recruits from other schools, but many dropped from our ranks. During this year, many of us began to take interest in extra curri- cular activities, with the result that when we became Iuniors, we were the most active group in the school. Our class was organized and met at the meetings of the Iunior Club, sponsored by Mrs. Baas. Our pioneering spirit crept out when we completed the plans suggested by former classes, and sponsored the first Iunior Promenade in the history of the Kelly High School. Finally, we had bestowed upon us the title of Seniors. Now we found that members of our class filled many important positions in the school. We gained these positions, encouraged by Miss Farr, Miss DeGraff, Miss McEniff, and Mr. Dixon, our division teachers. places. We give our torch to them have ended. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of the CLASS of IANUARY 1939 Life at Kelly has been good but all good things must eventually come to a close, and in this spirit, we, the graduating class of February, '39, wish to leave, as a memorial, this document, that will survive us and remain as a testimonial of our reign at Kelly. Being of sane body and mind, we hope, and influenced by none, we hereby wish to bequeath that which we cannot take with us upon our departure. First, our grade advisor, Miss Hennebry. For her quiet understanding and solutions to all of the problems arising in the course of our attendance at Kelly, we Wish to leave her the recollection of a class who truly appre- ciated her efforts. Then, to Miss DeGraff, who will remain in our memory not as just a class sponsor, but as a person who shared our cares and worries, we leave the hope that she will be fortunate enough in the future to secure classes who will not aggravate her as we surely must have. To the Iuniors we bequeath our privileges as Seniors, our rights to confuse Freshmen, providing they don't complain, also our ungranted but unques- tioned power to dominate the Sophomores, and leave you to keep one step ahead of the class behind you as you made us by so doggedly pursuing us for the past years. The Sophomores, sometimes termed Suffer-mores , we endow with the right of discovery and success in chosen fields. May you possess all the qual- ities of a Walter Winchell by not allowing any event, no matter how trivial, to escape your watchful eyes. Prominence, success, enjoyment, and accom- plishment are yours if, after considering the extra-curricular activities now accessible to you, you follow one chosen path, which we leave it to you to select. The Freshmen, the babes of Kelly, who are just beginning their high school careers, and who have so innocently and patiently been the victims of our pranks and ridicule, we endow, in utmost sincerity, with the entrance to scho- lastic achievement. As infants, however, your privileges are yet to come, so appreciate your blissful state as Freshmen and when opportunity knocks, take advantage and pass successfully to your Sophomore year. Now, after crossing fellow students off the list, our estate is not as yet entirely distributed for we wish to leave a share of it to the faculty. As we have at one time or another had occasion to come in Contact with practically all of the faculty, we wish to say, in a general way, Thank you. Thank you for helping us to overcome obstacles, thank you for guiding us, thank you, well, thanks a million for everything. We can leave only these two words, small in outward appearance, but with a meaning of infinite depth. Thus, we wish to say in closing, that we deemed it advisable to will our brethren and faculty abstract and inanimate objects because this type of in- heritance is everlasting and cannot be given away to others. ELLA KIAUP, Barrister. Witnesses: CAROL MARTIN, MARGARET SANDERS, MARILYN MILLER. BETTY IANE SULLIVAN. Page 37 The lunior Class On the verge ol seniordom, Where the brook and river meet , the Iunior lorsakes his petty complexes--which have accumulated from the shy Fresh- man and adolescent Sophomore stages. He has spent enough time at Kelly to become acquainted with its traditions, methods, and inhabitants, and re- ioices in its victories and aspirations achieved by the persevering individuals with which he comes in daily contact. ln the impending year which looms on the horizon, the lunior suddenly re- alizes the eminence and also the imrninence ot his position. All the activities and opportunities await his initiative, every tield lies open to accept him. Band, orchestra, dramatics, athletics, and scholastic endeavor have drained a lull measure oi benefit from the great amount ot lunior vigor and participa- tion, enthusiastically devoted to these tields. The success of the lunior Promenade was a beginning ot the accomplish- ments of the luniors. More power to them in the future! FOOTBALL Climaxing the most colorful season of football ever to be seen at Kelly, the Trojans on the last day of the 1937 season defeated Hyde Park, 13 to 12, for their first league triumph since their entry in city competition three years ago. Fred Vitalo set the pace by scoring all thirteen points. Under the tutelage of Coach Harry Dixon the team picked up momentum as the season pro- gressed, regardless of the strong opposition that the central section offered and the small aggregation with which Kelly had to confront it. The team was so inspired by Captain Nick Karnzic and his determination to overcome all obstacles that they threatened to win the Du Sable and Lindblom games, but a trick of Fate lost the former game, while a lack of reserves lost the latter. After having scored only fifteen points in the previous fourteen games the squad finished this season with thirty-one points in five games. With a majority of this team coming back for the 1938 season it is not diffi- cult to visualize their finishing in one of the first three positions of the central section. A recapitulation of the scores of this memorable season should be included in such a chronicle as this where posterity may look with pride and honor on the admirable accomplishments of the 1937 football team. Page 46 SENIOR BASKETBALL Although the number of experienced players on the senior varsity squad was rather small, they spurred themselves on to finish the latter part of their league schedule successfully. Going forth against more experienced teams, the quintet were fair opponents in league competition. This varsity squad faced the most difficult and best section in the entire city league with a fight- ing spirit and unbroken Will. Those who witnessed the contest between this team and the squad of picked alumni on March 31 were impressed at the showing these boys made. SENIOR BASKETBALL TEAM SRD ROW-eA. DeCeco, C. The persevering Iunior varsity squad is composed of players of five feet, seven inches, and under, in height. Endowed with unusual spirit, this light, fast, and snappy quintet managed to place third from the top with one hundred and ninety points. Next season's team should carry on with its usual success. The Kelly High Parent-Teacher Association meets on the third Wednesday of each month, in the school, where Worthwhile projects are carried on that will lead to security and happiness in the future. The meetings are most interesting. Distinguished speakers appear on the programs and, at times, different faculty members give informal talks about some phase of the activities which they direct. All are united in developing a thinking generation of men and women Whose attitudes toward religion and government, toward peace and educa- tion, Will be such that the Future Will be assured. They have been chosen to fill these positions because of their outstanding work in their English and Iournal- ism classes. They sacrifice all their study periods and sometimes spend hours after their school is finished, compiling material to be read by their fellow students. CLARION REPRESENTATIVES The Clarion representatives are students who have been selected by students of their divisions to assist in the execution of the carefully arranged system for the distribution of the Weekly paper. Their co-operation and Will- ingness in accepting the exacting responsibility of this position has simplified the task of maintaining a regular and accurate distribution of the school news- paper. r f J N if J l, '.:i,xf'Z , 1 ILL I X iff.-f'Z'ff'V 't'Z Y CLARION CIRCULATION STAEE STUDENT COUNCIL ZND HOW -H. These students are responsible for the receipts, contracts, distribution, and maintenance of subscriptions in addition to obtaining advertisements. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council, the most important student organization at Kelly, is a legislative body, since it formulates many rules for student activities, help- ing set up Worthy standards of citizenship for the entire student body. Each division has representation. Page 81 LAMPLIGHTER STAFF The producinq of a Kelly Annual, now a tradition, has been accomplished due to the spirit ot co-operation and enthusiasm of the Larnpliqhter Staff. This spirit was a predominatinq factor in all phases of the publication, with each department strivinq tor perfection in this, the sixth annual to be sponsored by the senior class. LAMPLIGHTER REPRESENTATIVES Without their exact, thorough aid in obtaining subscriptions to the annual, the success ot our Lampliqhter miqht have been non-existent. Splendid co-operation between the divisions and the Captains was established by these intermediaries. Their task was that of encouraqinq students to sub- scribe to the annual and collectinq the payments. 4'I'H ROW- -E.Kiaup, I.Donlon, B.Slunecko, R.Kolinski, B. Raqan, W.Malmquist, S. Swxstowicz, G. Weeks, sometimes months, were taken by this combined artist, designer, Carver, and finisher to build the chest. And the girl, taught to sew, to spin, to weave, took years to fill her hope chest with precious things for that happy day when she would start a home of her own. Today LANE, the glorified modern hope chest, brings the hope chest to its richest significance. More beautiful than those of any other age, the LANE Hope Chest provides absolute moth protection and features found in no other cedar chest.
