May this school, so dear to me, live long and prosper. Very sincerely yours, 5 OLD SCHOOL BUILDING FOREWORD A full awareness of the uncertainties of the future has foe- tered a wish to preserve for you in this volume of the KELLOGGIAN a brief outline of the Kellogg Schoo1's beginning and development. The founder of the present school is well known personally to many of you, as are the events attendant to its beginning. The school grew out of a vision of the Honorable A. L. Kellogg, a via- ion of improved educational facilities and opportunities for the children of this com unity, his birthplace. In early November, 1926, the voters of the community formed the Central Rural School District with Treadwell as its center. Actual construction of the new building began in the spring of 1928. The bu11d1ng was dedicated January 24, 1929, with Commission- er of Education Graves, hegent Mangan, and Justice Kellogg as chief speakers. The principal during the first year of the A. L. Kellogg High lchool was Mr. Edwards. He was immediately succeeded by Mr.Dana B. Roblee, who held the position until 1955. During his term, many 4 of the organizations of the school, such as glee club, orchestra, and 4 H groups were started. Basketball, coached by Mr. Roblee, grew from intramural competition in 1950, to participation in the sectionals in 1932. Baseball was also a major sport. In 1955 1'-ir. Donald Charles undertook the school Administration. New activities developed were Prize Speaking in 1953, Bugle and Drum in 1955, and Band in 1956. The athletic program was increased to include cross country and soccer. Successful basketball, foot- ball, and baseball teams made their presence known throughout the region. Under the guidance of Mr. W. Chester B. Gottshall, who follow- ed Mr. Charles in 1938, the school has known the addition of a full time physical education program, musical organizations accredited by the state, improved shop facilities, a nutritious hot lunch pro- gram, and school-owned busses. Athletics have continued successful, with championship basketball teams in 1959-40 and 1940-41, until HB present when abnormal conditions hue necessitated their curtailment. ABRAHAM L. KELLOGG CENTRAL RURAL SCHOOL , PRINCIPAL W. CHESTER B. GOTTSHALL The United States Government has requested that citi- zens curtail many of their activities, and that they elimin- ate the non-essential for the duration of the war. The ao- tivity life of Kellogg Central School has been acutely af- Pected this year, as we have conscientiously tried to follow this edict of our civilian and military leaders with patri- otic enthusiasm. For this reason the readers of the 1945 KELLOGGIAN will miss the athletic write-ups and related ac- tivities which have played such a prominent role in its past editions. The senior class canceled many of its scheduled pub- lic dances and the annual spring trip to New York City. Graduation exercises have been abbreviated. Our students made these small sacrifices cheerfully, so that our armed forces may gain the final victory more quickly. We know that by enduring these minor inconveniences at this time of cri- sis and emergency, we are helping to speed up the return to a normal educational program in a normal world. S DED ICAT I ON We, the seniors of nineteen hundred and forty-three, respectfully dedicate this KELL- OGGIAN to our friend and adviser, Miss Mildred E. Becker. Her loyalty and guidance during the last two years of high school are greatly appreciated. 7 Left to right--Mr. Huyck, Mr. Archibald, M . Morrison, Mr. Kellogg, Mrs. Anderson. Unphotographed: Mr. Cronauer. BOARD OF EDUCATION In behalf of the student body of the A. L. Kellogg School, we wish to express our thanks to the Board of Edu- cation for their constant efforts in these troubled and ab- normal times to provide the best possible educational facil- ities for the youth of this com unity. Second row: Sutherland, Jersey, Miss Becker, Kellogg Senior Class Because of conditions brought about by the war, the sen- iors canceled their customary trip to New York City. The mon ey which they had earned for this purpose was used to buy a war bond for each member of the class. Activities for the year included several successful dan- ces and parties. In October the class accompanied by their adviser, Miss Becker, and guests held a hot dog roast on Ke1logg's hill. In April they enjoyed a roast chicken dinner, prepared by the girls, in the Community House. Dancing was the high- light of the evening. They also held a banquet in Oneonta after which they attended the movies. Officers: President, Charles Jesterg Secretary-Treas- urer, Margaret Bender. 16 JUNIOR CLASS Nine high-spirited juniors met in September determined to cover quickly the last lap between them and the enviable position of being seniors. They were joined in a short time by B111 Kennedy who proved a welcome addition to the group. The most outstanding event of the year was the Junior Prom at which they learned to their sorrow that soap flakes and square dancing do not mix. Two parties were enjoyed during the year: one at the Community House and the other at Viola Mathis' home. Always original, the class decided to buy their class rings this year instead of their senior year. The class regrets the loss of four of its members dur- ing the year: E. Cable, U. Boecke, R. Strangeway, and P. Rey- nolds. Officers President--Viola Mathis Seo.-treasurer--Pansy Reynolds Vice-president--Aileen Pinney Adviser-4Miss Hartman Left to right--Front row: Davidson, lathis, Pinney. SOPHOMO E CLASS Holding to their tradition of being party-loving, this active class started out the year with a party at Eden's. The fun they had there spurred them on to a Hal1owe'en party at Fitch's, a hot dog roast on Me1n's Hill, a Christmas par- ty in the Community House, and a sliding party at Howe's. They practiced being hosts and hostesses at a very ex- cellent class dinner prepared by the girls in the Com unity House. Members of the class have actively participated in Band and Prize Speaking, Lofthouse and Ulmer winning respectively first and second prize in the latter. It has included in its reper- toire secular and sacred music, folk tunes and classical se- lections. The group has made appearances at the church, In assembly, and in the Christmas pageant. 28 BAND The Kellogg Band dates back to 1956 when it was started by Principal Charles and contained thirty-six members. The organization has continued active since its beginning. At present it shows a decrease in members but not in musical quality. During the year the band played for the dedication of the Treadwell Honor Roll, the senior play, and the prize speaking contest. It also made two appearances in church and was featured at the annual Memorial Day services held in the town cemetery. Several new pieces have been acquired. Among them are the marches: 'Remember Pearl Harbor, 'God Bless American 'Marine Hymn , Anchors Awe1gh , and 'The Army Air Corps . Left to right-- Front row: K. Storck, Mein, Gottshall, Mus- ley, D. Although the book is somewhat curtailed as to size, and var- ious details may not be up to their usual standard, it truly represents student effort and co-operation under difficult conditions. Despite priorities on equipment and difficulty in contacting advertisers, you have a yearbook, and we hope you like it. Our sincere thanks go to Miss Becker, who saved our photography situation by taking the majority of the pictures on her own miniature camera. We appreciate greatly the time and effort of Viola Mathis '44, who devoted many hours to assisting with the typing of the book and that of Betty Eden '45, who is res- ponsible for the art work on division pages.
