Points Of Interest ...S 1. Village Pump - Built by Gus Kelley in 1890 as a combination barber shop and Post Office. The upper floor was used as a social hall. 3. Island Market - Matso's Place and the Island Market were connected at one time. The building has been used as a library, United States Express Co. in 1885, and as a silent movie hall. 5. Brown's General Store. The store was built by August Schaedler. The store was ovmed and operated by Fred Elfers. Later Frank Lange and Walter Brown owned the store. It 1S now operated by Nadine Brown. ,I 2. Matso's Place - Known as The Lodge . It was built in 1850. It was the only place on the Island where the men could meet for informal discussions or to just loaf. German Reformed Church - This was the first Protestant Church on the Island which was dedicated on November 26, 1866. The first minister was Rev. Mr. Kness. A few trustees are still living on the Island even though the Church is no longer in use. 13. Estes School - The School was built in 1901. James Estes be- queathed S15,000.00 for the purpose. Grades K-12 operate in one building. It is not unusual to have only one graduate, but this year we will have two graduates. 31
