Varsity cheerleaders It's hard work, but it's fun, too! Is the definition of a cheerleader someone who is popular, jumps around and screams at pep assemblies and games? Being a Varsity cheerleader is a lot of hard work, but it's a lot of fun, too, said junior Kayla Brown. Last summer Varsity cheerleaders at- tended North Texas University for four days. While there, they won four blue ribbons and three spirit sticks. Out of the 75 schools that were there, Keller was one out of the nine schools nominated for an award of excellence and placed in the finals. During the year cheerleaders planned such activities as the watermelon party for the football teams and a popsicle party for both the band and boys and girls Let's hear it for Varsity - Varsity cheerleaders cheer at North Texas State University summer camp with enthusiasm and spirit, Break time already? - Mascot Scot Lackey lays down on the job during one of the all-night painting sessions. athletics. They helped plant grass on the practice field, painted signs for pep assemblies and football games, According to junior Dana White, they lived at school. While trying to support all the teams, they planned all the pep assemblies, painted more signs and practiced cheers. On two separate occasions, the Varsity cheerleaders had an all-night slumber party at school to paint signs. In the midst of all these activities, they found time to have fundraisers. We did an excellent job on selling the Keller In- dian T-shirts, said White. They also sold football, basketball and baseball rib- bons, plus boutonnieres. - LOREE VARDAS xf' Support your local football team - Varsity cheerleaders support players at the Diamond Hill football game, Indians - Varsity cheerleaders spell I-N-D-I-A-N-S with their bodies during the Castleberry pep assembly. Beeeeeee p . Indianettes practice for success Tweeeet, Tweet, Tweet, Tweet, Tweet, Tweet . . . These words may not reproduce the exact sound of Neyce Fails' whistle, but they were chosen to represent that familiar sound during sixth period or before school in the gym as the Indianettes practiced. Many people do not realize the time and effort it takes to perform a routine for a pep rally, football game or a competition. Their average workout time, including school time, is fifteen hours per week. I don't think the general public realizes the time and energy it takes to perform a three-minute routine, said Director Kim Burge. Knowing the numbers of hours the Indianet- tes put into a routine, it's easy to tell that there were some hard and frustrating times. Most of the girls agreed that the money was definitely the worst Cor hardestj part because there is no financial support received by the school system. This year I've spent approximately 3300. If you were a new member, it would cost about 35450 because you have to buy clothes and stuff that old members already have, said senior Rhonda Moore. As in almost everything one does, the bad goes hand in hand with the good. The Indianet- tes' activities were no exception. The Indianettes attended three competitions during the school year. In February they com- peted in the Marching Auxiliaries Miss American Drill Team competition in San An- tonio, and in April, they competed in Fort Worth. In all three competitions, the Indianettes won the judges Award and Sweepstakes. They were awarded for best choreography for their jazz, prop, and high kick routines. Other awards the Indianettes have won include the Technique award CSan Antoniol, tying with Grapevine for the Best in Class 4A Qalso San Antoniob. In Fort Worth, they won the top award, Texas DancefDrill Team Champions.
