Here comes the band . . 'State Bound' and Marching Band slogans State Bound and 'ANo Bozos rang through the halls. Everything seemed to click and come together, Wayne Tympanick, the band director said. The marching band scored a I in state competition in Austin for the first time. Two factors that aided in this effort were his assistant Ken Hurst and his trusty computer, used to design the drills. When school started, the band worked each morning and Tuesday evenings every week. It's a lot of hard work, but it paid off, one member said. The Marching Band was extremely busy during the season with regional and district contests in Cleburne, UTA, Vernon and Austin. In all of these ' o Bozos' competitions the band made off with champion- ships and trophies. It was also involved with extra activities such as the Keller parade and a concert at the North Hills Mall which ended when the glass in the store windows shook and the band was asked to leave by the managers. Whr1t do they expect with 142 band members? Wfayne Typanick said. UNO Bozos meant no mistakes and that stood true. State Band meant exactly what it did. It went all the way. It was really exciting to be the first group at Keller to ever make a I in state marching band competition. It was worth all our hard work, another band member said. - STEPHANIE CARRIER Flag 'em down! - The color guard struts its stuff in the joshua pep rally. ' o sweat' Band competes in playing, sight reading For the 120 students in Symphonic I and Symphonic II bands, competition was no sweat g they were ranked ninth in the state. When they went to competitions at other schools, they got very high scores for their playing and also for their sight reading. Their directors, Wayne Tympanick and Ken Hurst, feel that this has been one of the best years for the band. The band went to Boswell High School on Match l where it received good ratings from the judges. The main reason our playing has improved so much is When Mr. Tympanick conducts, everybody plays! - Band director Tympanick conducts Sym- phonic I as they prepare for the Christmas Concert. Practice makes perfect! - Alex Cristie, Elizabeth Combs and Anne Vaughn practice for the Christmas Concert. .,,.'. 1 . I've always wanted to play the drums!!! - Kim Vick, Marlo Garcia, Michelle Vanfleet and Patty Slagel practice on their clarinets for the Christmas Concert. 56 Symphonic Band because the students are so much more disciplined and als because we are more organized than ever before, sail Tympanick. To be placed in Symphonic I or Symphonic II bands, eac student had to go through a series of auditions at which hefsh played some prepared music, some sight reading and som scales. These auditions took place last August. - MICHELI SHOEMAKER 'og' tx! 4 . I ,ff ' a Q W 'I T 1 an --an M f
