Testers' Tested Teachers, administrators take exam Do you think students are the only people who take tests? Wfell, guess what, you're wrong. Last year in Texas all teachers and ad- ministrators had to take and pass a test with a minimum score of 75 to keep their Texas teaching certificates. The Texas Administration of Current Ad- ministrators and Teachers CTECATD was taken all around the state on March 10. In early March, the Texas State Teaching Association QTSTAJ took the case to court to stop the TECAT. The ruling was in favor of taking the test as scheduled. Teachers faced losing their lifetime cer- tificates for failing the TECAT, but they were it Come on you can do it - Coaches Cecil Cannon and Ray Brangan sit on the sideline watching the basketball team. Teachers in the district were given an extra year to pass. Despite the hardships, 14 new teachers were added to the staff to offset the growth rate of the students. With all that has happened to the teaching profession, most teachers feel it is still a worth- while and rewarding profession. One of the neatest aspects of teaching is see- ing my students become young adults. I feel proud to have known them and they really become a special part of my life. Featuring teachers Spare time acting, flying, etc. intrigue facult members Are teachers all school and no fun? Most students think that teachers have no life outside the school, and that they always think of ways to make the students' lives miserable ones. There may be teachers like that, but on the other hand, there are teachers with exciting lives out- side ofschool. Mrs. Taffy Geisel, Mrs, Dorris Worsham and Mrs. Helen Lewis have several things in common, besides teaching and passing the TECAT, they all three lead exciting and different lives outside of school. The past two years of Mrs. Taffy Geisel's life reads like a fairy tale. After graduating from Baylor University with a master's degree in Communication Studies fSpeech and Drama Educationb, she taught at a few schools, In l983 while she was teaching at Sam Houston High School in Arlington, an agent came to talk to her class. While he was there he heard and saw her act and wanted her to sign a contract with him. In the summer of '84 she moved to Dallas. Once in Dallas she sent a demo-tape to Tayna-Blair Agency Cone of the best agents in Dallasb. The next day they called her in for an interview, within two weeks she did her hrst voice-over for a radio commercial. Since then she has done many voice-overs for radio commercials and has appeared in two episodes of Dallas as an extra. In her Hrst play she was a mean ugly step flower in, Cinderella in Flower Lanclg she was in kindergarten. It was not until high school that she got serious about acting. I loved it. I did anything I could. I performed on stage, did lights, sound, make-up, anything, said Geisel. Geisel has a writing ability, also. She is in the midst of writing a series ofchildren's books. While she was writing a play for her church, a comic look at the Old Testament, she started to date Howard Geisel, a longtime friend. In November of '84 she started teaching at Keller. In December '85 she married Howard. In May she took the One-Act play, I Never Sang For My Father to state, and in October she is expecting a baby. These years have been crazy ones but wonderful. My life gets better every year. I know my life is in God's hands and whatever he does is fun, said Geisel. Have you ever wondered how it felt to be in control ofa plane? Mrs. Dorris Worsham can explain the feeling because she is getting her private pilot's license. Worsham's husband had pilot training in the Air Force during World War II, and now that he is retired, he flies privately. Since Mrs. Worsham thought that it would be fun to take trips with him and to take turns flying, in the fall of 1985 she took ground school lessons at TCjC. She took flying lessons during Christmas and Spring break at Meacham Field in Fort Worth. I've taken 20 hours so far, and you need 40 so I'm halfway through. Right now I'm having money problems and haven't been able to finish my hours, but I plan to as soon as I can, said Mrs. Worsham. Even though her husband is a licensed pilot, she would not want to take lessons from him. I think that it would be hard for my husband to try and teach me how to fly. He tried to teach me how to ride a lawn mower and that didn't work out, said Mrs. Worsham. ISS Teacher Feature Worsham enjoys flying, but admitted that she still gets airsick. After having taken hard aviation courses, she feels that it has made her a better teacher. I can better understand that students need help when something is hard, and I realize that they Cstudentsb have problems, too, said Mrs. Worsham. Teacher, wife, mother and partner in a company? Yes, that's right, Mrs. Helen Lewis does it all, Seven years ago when she mar- ried jerry Lewis Cnot the comedianj little did she know that she would be doing all these things. When they moved to Fort Worth, they opened LCI Custom Imprints. They specialize in hats, but they also do shirts and plaques. Now that they have a growing business, they have had to build a room onto their house so that they can set up their equipment and have more room to set up shop. Once a month the Lewis family sets up a booth at the XVeather- ford Flea Market. The whole family helps out with the business. Tara and Tiffany fMrs. Lewis' daughtersb love to help out. When we have a customer, they like to try and help sell. They have their own sales pitch: We even pay them for their help, said Mrs. Lewis. Mrs. Lewis also helps her husband in his business, Rain Masters LanClScape and Inversion. She types bids, does the billing and pays the bills. Their third business is raising and selling registered Shelties fShetland sheep dogsb. In every business venture we have made a nice profit, said Mrs. Lewis. All of their businesses have been managed outside their regular jobs. It's been rough, but we have managed it, said Mrs. Lewis. Besides working in her family's businesses, she has also worked with community theatre, civic organizations, done choreography, sung and played the flute at her church and sung at festivals with her sister's group. Who says our teachersxdo not have private lives?
